Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Gossip and Fury

The sun hung low over the valley, casting long shadows across the terraced fields. Inside Devika's modest home, the rhythmic clinking of pots and the aroma of simmering spices filled the air. Leela was busy preparing tea when the voices of approaching neighbors broke the routine tranquility.

The first to arrive were Satish and Suman, a middle-aged couple known for their keen interest in everyone else's business. Soon after, Rajesh and Rekha, and Prakash and Vimla joined them, all carrying the weight of "urgent news."

Leela greeted them with her usual warmth, though she noticed a peculiar tension among them. "Come in, come in. What brings all of you here today?" she asked, setting down the tea tray.

Once seated, Suman spoke first, her voice low but deliberate. "Leela, we have been hesitant to speak about this, but as neighbors and well-wishers, we felt it was our duty."

Leela's brow furrowed in concern. "What is it, Suman?"

Satish leaned forward, his expression grim. "It's about Devika."

"Devika?" Leela repeated, her heart skipping a beat. "What about her?"

Rekha sighed dramatically, exchanging a glance with her husband before speaking. "We've noticed that she goes up the mountain almost every day. For hours at a time. It's... unusual, don't you think?"

Leela forced a smile, trying to downplay the implication. "She's always loved the mountains. It's where she finds peace."

"But, Leela," Vimla interjected, her voice tinged with faux sympathy, "what if it's not peace she's looking for? What if it's someone else?"

The room fell silent, the weight of Vimla's words pressing down like a stone. Arjun, who had just entered from the veranda, stopped in his tracks. "What are you trying to say?" he demanded, his voice sharp.

Rajesh cleared his throat awkwardly. "We don't want to assume the worst, Arjun, but we've seen her heading up the trail at odd hours. It's the kind of thing that raises questions."

Suman nodded solemnly. "She's at an impressionable age. And you know how young people are these days—full of secrets."

Arjun's face darkened, his jaw tightening. "Are you suggesting that my daughter...?"

Rekha cut him off gently. "We're not suggesting anything, Arjun. But people talk. They've started saying she might have... a lover."

"A lover?" Leela exclaimed, the words stabbing her like a dagger. "That's absurd! Devika is devoted to her studies."

"But studies don't take her to the mountains every day," Suman countered. "We're only telling you this because we care. You should keep an eye on her before it's too late."

Leela's hands trembled as she set down her teacup. "This can't be true. Devika would never..."

Satish sighed heavily, his tone exasperated. "Leela, we know it's hard to accept, but denial won't help. The signs are there. The secrecy, the frequent trips, the hours she spends away. We've even seen her sneaking out early in the morning."

Arjun's fists clenched, his face red with anger. "If what you're saying is true, then she has brought shame upon this family!"

"Arjun, calm down," Leela pleaded, though her voice wavered with doubt. "We don't know anything for certain."

"But what if they're right?" Vimla pressed. "You can't just ignore this. If people start talking, your family's reputation could be at stake."

Arjun paced the room, his mind racing. "I'll put a stop to this nonsense. I'll confront her as soon as she comes back."

Suman placed a reassuring hand on Leela's shoulder. "We're only telling you this because we care about you and Devika. No parent wants to see their child go astray."

Leela nodded, tears brimming in her eyes. "Thank you for telling us. We'll handle it."

The neighbors exchanged satisfied glances, their mission accomplished. They soon departed, leaving behind a heavy silence in the room. Arjun sat down heavily, his hands gripping the edge of the table.

"How could she do this to us?" he muttered, his voice thick with anger.

Leela sat beside him, her heart torn between loyalty to her daughter and the doubts sown by the neighbors. "We'll talk to her, Arjun. We'll get to the bottom of this."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the valley in shadow, the once harmonious household was now clouded by suspicion and unease. Devika's absence loomed larger than ever, her journey into spiritual awakening unknowingly setting off ripples of misunderstanding among those she held dearest.
