Chapter 36 - Chapters 38: The rising storm

The news spread like wildfire.

Within hours, whispers of Kaelen's flight from the kingdom reached the ears of his enemies. At first, it was dismissed as an exaggeration, a rumor too absurd to be true. How could the mighty conqueror, who had crushed every obstacle in his path, suddenly flee? It seemed impossible. Yet, as more and more reports poured in, the truth became undeniable: Kaelen, the self-proclaimed future ruler of the world, had been forced to flee the very kingdom he had set his sights on conquering.

And with that, the carefully laid plans of those who opposed him began to shift.

---

In a grand, shadow-cloaked hall nestled deep within the heart of the city, the leaders of the vampire clans, along with Arcanis, the powerful mage who had long plotted in the background, convened. The room was dimly lit by flickering torchlight, the atmosphere thick with tension. The gathering was quiet at first, each of them waiting for the others to speak.

Finally, it was the Primogenitor, who had witnessed Kaelen's flight firsthand, who broke the silence. His ancient, ethereal voice carried weight, as if each word had been spoken from the abyss itself.

"He fled," the Primogenitor said, his tone devoid of emotion but still laced with contempt. "A victory so hollow it is almost laughable. The boy, who thought himself invincible, has shown his true colors. And yet..." The Primogenitor's gaze darkened, and his eyes gleamed with a dangerous light. "He will return. They always do."

At the other end of the table, Arcanis, a tall and imposing figure, stroked his chin thoughtfully, his eyes narrowed with calculation. The mage had been monitoring Kaelen from the shadows, aware of his rise but never quite understanding the full extent of his power. Arcanis had expected Kaelen to be ambitious, but this latest development raised new questions.

"You underestimate him," Arcanis said, his voice cold and deliberate. "It is no surprise that he fled. We all know that the Primogenitor is an entity far beyond his reach. The boy was foolish to think he could simply absorb their power and become one of them. He underestimated the vampires, and now he pays the price." His eyes flicked toward the Primogenitor with a slight, knowing smirk. "But do not mistake his retreat for surrender. He will learn from this failure, and he will come back stronger."

A low growl echoed from the shadows as the head of the Vampire Council, a powerful ancient vampire known as **Lucian**, spoke up. His voice, deep and velvety, was laced with both disdain and worry. "We should not be so quick to dismiss him. Yes, Kaelen fled, but the fact remains that he is not dead. And his potential, even if still unrefined, is vast. I fear that in his retreat, he may have just retreated into the shadows to grow stronger, perhaps in ways we cannot anticipate."

The tension in the room thickened as Lucian's words sank in. Arcanis's lips curled into a thin smile, but it was a smile that did not reach his eyes. He knew the danger of underestimating an enemy, and Kaelen had proved that he was more than just an ambitious boy.

"Agreed," Arcanis said, leaning forward, his gaze hardening. "But we are not the only ones who see his potential. If he escapes this time, it will not be for long. And I have little doubt that he will come to seek vengeance on those who caused his downfall. The question is, how will we prepare for his return?"

The vampire leaders exchanged uneasy glances. They had once seen Kaelen as a mere annoyance—a fleeting threat that could be snuffed out in time. But now, with his bloodline enhanced by vampire magic, his powers far beyond those of ordinary men, and his cunning untested, they were starting to reconsider their underestimation of him.

---

After a long silence, **Lady Seraphine**, an ancient and revered vampire sorceress, spoke. Her voice was smooth and measured, carrying the weight of centuries of power. "We must find out where he is hiding. If Kaelen is anything, he is patient. He will not make the same mistake twice. And he will not rest until he is stronger. We should begin by finding where he has gone, and perhaps... subtly help him, guide him, push him towards the path of destruction."

"But if he grows stronger, what happens then?" Lucian interjected, his voice grave. "We risk him returning with far more power than we can control. Even the Primogenitor will struggle to reign him in once he has fully realized his potential."

Arcanis's eyes gleamed with a cold, calculating light. "Then we shall strike first, before he is ready. We must ensure that Kaelen never has the chance to recover, to rise again as a threat. If we can take him out before he has the opportunity to gather support, before he rebuilds his power, he will remain nothing more than a fleeting shadow."

"But... his power is immense now," Lucian said. "He may be a fool, but he is a fool with vast potential. If we strike too early, we risk provoking him into an even more dangerous course of action. Perhaps we should wait... but watch him closely."

Seraphine nodded slowly. "Agreed. We must tread carefully. He will not be an easy opponent to defeat, but if we remain cautious and move when the time is right, we can snuff out his ambitions before they become a true threat."

Arcanis turned his gaze to the Primogenitor, whose presence loomed over the entire room, like an ancient storm waiting to unleash its fury.

"You speak of caution, but time is our enemy," Arcanis said, his voice hardening. "We cannot afford to wait indefinitely. The boy has proven his ambition. And now, with the vampire blood in him, he will only grow stronger."

The Primogenitor's lips twitched in what might have been a faint smile. "Patience is a virtue, Arcanis. And power... power is a game that requires long-term strategy. If Kaelen is to be truly defeated, we must first understand him, his ambitions, and his weaknesses."

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle into the room.

"And when we do, we will strike as one. There is no mercy for those who defy the darkness."

As the council continued their discussions, one thing was clear: Kaelen was no longer just an annoyance. He was a threat, one that had forced even the most ancient of beings to reconsider their strategies. The room was filled with murmurs and plans, as each leader, each powerful figure in the room, began to prepare for Kaelen's inevitable return.

Some spoke of undermining him from within, creating traps and deceptions. Others plotted to crush him underfoot before he could rise again. But all agreed on one thing—Kaelen had shown a remarkable tenacity, a will to survive that could not be ignored.

And they knew one thing for certain: he was coming back. Stronger, deadlier, and more determined than ever.
