Chereads / The Alpha's Abandoned Daughter / Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Shadows and Secrets

I was barely through the gates of Crescent Moon Academy, and I could feel the weight of all their eyes on me. Whispers echoed down the hallway, bouncing off the walls like I was some kind of attraction. I didn't need heightened senses to hear the same labels being muttered over and over again. "Alpha's abandoned daughter," they whispered, some voices dripping with mockery, others with curiosity.

"Is she really a member of the Crescent Moon pack? I heard she was left to fend for herself." I picked up the fragments of gossip, but I kept my head high, every muscle in my body tense yet controlled. They could stare, they could judge—all I needed was to get through today without trouble.

This place was supposed to be just a stepping stone, a means to an end. But the path had quickly turned treacherous. No matter how quiet I tried to be, how much I tried to fade into the crowd, there was always someone waiting to test me.

And then, there she was.

Claire was leaning against the row of lockers like she owned the entire school. Her arms were crossed, her eyes fixed on me, and that wicked smile made it clear she was up to something. Her friends flanked her like a personal army, each one looking at me with equal disdain.

"Look who decided to grace us with her presence," Claire sneered, her tone dripping with sarcasm. She tilted her head, looking me up and down with a judgmental gaze. "Didn't anyone tell you? This isn't a place for strays."

I knew her type well. The mean-girl attitude, the need to put others down to feel powerful—it was classic pack politics, just wrapped up in a polished, pretty package. I clenched my fists but kept my expression calm. If I let her see she was getting to me, she'd only push harder.

"Didn't anyone tell you?" I shot back, keeping my tone cold and detached. "Your words don't mean much to me."

Claire's eyes narrowed, her smile dropping. For a moment, she looked taken aback, but she quickly masked it with a mocking laugh. "Oh, feisty. But let's get one thing straight, princess. Just because you're here doesn't mean you belong. Don't think for a second you're on our level."

One of her friends snickered, adding, "Yeah, maybe she thinks she's something special because of her 'mysterious past.'"

My wolf stirred within me, anger simmering just below the surface. I could feel the need to defend myself, to put them in their place, but I held back. This was neither the time nor the place.

Out of nowhere, a familiar voice cut through the tension.

"Is there a problem here?"

Jason Lycroft stepped forward, his presence causing a noticeable shift in the atmosphere. He had this confident air, a way of drawing attention without trying. Claire immediately softened, her body language shifting from confrontational to coy as she shot him a smile.

"We're just welcoming Kira to the school," she said sweetly, her voice all innocence.

Jason glanced at her, his expression flat. "Doesn't look like much of a welcome." He turned to me, his eyes searching my face with an intensity I couldn't quite read. "You okay?"

I didn't want his help. I didn't need it. But something in his gaze told me that this wasn't just about stepping in; he was genuinely curious. "I'm fine," I replied coolly.

Jason gave a slight nod, his eyes flicking back to Claire with a warning. "You should get to class. Don't make a scene on someone's first day."

Claire looked like she wanted to argue, but after a second, she huffed and stormed off with her friends trailing behind. Once they were out of sight, Jason turned his attention back to me.

"Don't mind Claire," he said, his tone softer now. "She just...likes to test new people."

"I noticed," I replied dryly, still wary of him.

He smirked, a small, amused smile that felt strangely genuine. "You've got a backbone. Most new students just roll over for her."

I shrugged. "I've met her type before."

Jason's gaze lingered on me, and for a brief moment, I felt like he was trying to see beyond my words, beyond my walls. It was unsettling. "Well, if you need help navigating this place, I'm around," he offered, his voice holding an edge of something I couldn't quite place.

"Thanks, but I'll manage," I said, hoping to cut the conversation short.

He nodded, though his eyes remained on me, almost like he was studying me. "All right. See you around, Kira."

As he walked away, I couldn't shake the feeling that Jason Lycroft wasn't just another popular guy at school. There was something more to him, something he was keeping hidden, just like me.

---

Later that night, I slipped into the shadows of the forest surrounding Crescent Moon Academy. The school's lights faded behind me as I moved deeper into the trees, my senses heightened, every nerve on edge. Tonight wasn't just any night—it was the night of my first mission here.

My real purpose at Crescent Moon Academy wasn't about fitting in or keeping my head down. I was part of a covert team, a Secret Assassination Group assigned to eliminate threats to the pack. And my current target? The leader of the Savage Night Pack.

They'd been stirring up trouble, threatening the stability of packs across the region, and rumors pointed to their leader hiding somewhere nearby. Tonight, I was tasked with gathering intel—any information that would lead us closer to dismantling their operations.

Moving swiftly, I kept low, blending into the darkness. The faint scent of wolves lingered in the air, interwoven with something else, something sharper and far more dangerous. I followed the trail, my instincts sharp and ready.

Suddenly, voices cut through the quiet. I pressed myself against a tree, listening carefully.

"Are you sure this is the right place?" one voice asked, sounding impatient.

A second voice replied, deep and confident. "We're exactly where we need to be. The exchange is happening soon. Stay sharp."

I peered through the trees, my breath catching when I saw the two figures standing in the clearing. Jason and...another. They looked almost identical, down to the same piercing gaze and strong jawline.

Twins. But there was something darker, more dangerous about the other one. While Jason had an air of calculated control, his twin seemed wild, barely contained.

The realization hit me with the force of a punch to the gut. Jason and his brother—Kane, I remembered hearing his name—were part of the Savage Night Pack. Or, worse, they were the ones leading it.

My mind spun. Jason, the one who'd been kind to me, who had offered to help me, was tied to the very pack I was here to dismantle. The pack that had been causing chaos and destruction.

As I watched, a voice echoed in my mind, a low, powerful whisper that felt both foreign and familiar. "One will be your mate, and one will be your protector. Their fates are bound to yours."

The words settled deep within me, a prophecy that felt as old as time itself. The implications left me breathless. Jason and Kane weren't just enemies—they were somehow entwined with my destiny.

I steadied myself, pushing down the emotions threatening to cloud my judgment. Prophecies and mates were irrelevant right now. I had a mission to complete, and any distractions could be deadly.

But just as I took a step back, the underbrush crackled under my foot. Jason's head snapped up, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the forest, his gaze honing in on where I stood hidden.

"Kane," he muttered, gesturing toward me. His twin followed his gaze, his eyes flashing with suspicion.

I held my breath, every muscle tense as they stepped closer. My cover was blown.

Without hesitation, I bolted, my heart pounding as I darted through the trees, their footsteps close behind. I weaved through the shadows, moving as fast as my legs could carry me, my mind racing. I couldn't lead them back to the Academy, couldn't risk exposing myself further.

A hand reached out, grabbing my arm and yanking me to a stop. I twisted, throwing my weight into a defensive stance, prepared to fight my way out. But it was Jason who held me, his grip firm but not painful, his eyes dark with confusion and something else—something raw and conflicted.

"Kira," he breathed, his voice low. "Why were you spying on us?"

I held his gaze, my mind working quickly, calculating my next move. "I could ask you the same question," I replied, my tone sharp.

Jason's jaw tightened, his eyes flickering with a mixture of anger and something else. "You don't understand what you've stumbled into."

"Oh, I understand more than you think," I shot back, pulling my arm free. "But this isn't over, Jason."

Before he could react, I slipped into the shadows, disappearing into the night. As I left him behind, his presence lingered in my mind, along with the haunting words of the prophecy.

One would be my mate. One would be my protector.

And both of them were more dangerous than I'd ever imagined.
