Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Staying by Your Side

It seemed like concern, but in truth, he was preoccupied with the woman in the hospital.

The X-ray was out, and the attending doctor picked it up to look, "She's badly injured."

"The bones are broken; proceed with the hospital admission."

Pei Heyan was indifferent, his heart clenched slightly, and he didn't continue to question the attending doctor. He glanced at the card standing on the desk.

On it was prominently written the woman's name: Cao Yinqiong.

Pei Heyan went to the ward.

Wen Tang's wounds had already been treated, and her leg was wrapped in layers upon layers of gauze.

He sat beside her, watching her pale face intently, unemotionally, but his arm lifted involuntarily.

Realizing he was about to touch Wen Tang's cheek, he withdrew his arm, suppressing the gesture.

And so, he stayed the whole night.

The next day when he woke up, he saw Wen Tang still asleep.

Her lips puckered up dryly, so he casually took a cotton swab, dipped it in water, and moistened them for her.

Suddenly, Wen Tang felt revived, like a wilted flower receiving nourishment and slowly coming back to life, she slowly opened her eyes.

And there, in her line of sight, appeared a pair of distinctly boned, large hands.

She recognized them; these were the hands that had caressed her on so many nights.

Pei Heyan retracted his arm; the cotton swab was tossed into the trash can, and his expression turned cold again.

Wen Tang tried to sit up, supported by her arms, but couldn't help crying out in pain.

Pei Heyan's lips lightly parted, "It's okay, just lie down."

Wen Tang's heart warmed, thinking of his recent behavior. Perhaps he did have some feelings for her, which made the pain in her leg subside considerably.

Little did she know, this scene had been captured by the media lurking in the darkness and was posted online in a sensational article.

The rumors about Pei Heyan's scandal started to spread wildly.

#Wasn't it said that Miss Lu was the one to marry into the Pei Family? How come he's involved with another woman now?

#It's a business marriage, everyone just watch, don't take it seriously, wealthy families like this are full of secret affairs with multiple wives and concubines.

And there were various other comments.

Lu Nianxin's face darkened.

The servant brought up the simmered red dates and fish maw, which made Lu Nianxin even more irritated.

"Get out, out, out."

The servant didn't dare to breathe and quietly left the red dates and fish maw behind, stepping out of the bedroom.

They hadn't gotten far when they heard the sound of porcelain shattering from inside the bedroom.

Slam!

The simmered red dates and fish maw were swept onto the floor; the porcelain shattered into pieces.

Lu Nianxin couldn't suppress her anger and possessiveness with no outlet; she got up, grabbed her bag, and left the Lu Family.

She, Lu Nianxin, never tolerated sharing her possessions with anyone else, even the thought was upsetting.

Even the speed of the car seemed to increase significantly.

When the car stopped in the hospital parking lot, Lu Nianxin put on her sunglasses and got out of the car.

With a globally limited-edition Hermès in hand, she walked into the hospital.

Just this million-dollar outfit made her stand out sharply from the rest of the people in the hospital.

She walked arrogantly up to the front desk and asked, "Which room is Wen Tang in?"

The nurse checked,"Good day, ma'am, we have Miss Wen staying in Ward 811."

Lu Nianxin turned and left.

The figure was especially impressive in the eyes of the young nurse, and even carried a touch of admiration.

Lu Nianxin headed straight for 811.

She stopped in front of room 811 according to the door number and looked inside.

Through the glass, she unexpectedly saw Pei Heyan open a jar of white porridge and bring it to Wen Tang, acting intimately as if they were a couple or a married pair, which made her clench her fingernails into her flesh in irritation.

She pushed open the door and said, "Secretary Wen, know your place, don't be ungrateful."

Wen Tang looked up at the sound.

Pei Heyan put down the white porridge. "She has an injury on her hand, which makes it inconvenient."

Lu Nianxin approached Pei Heyan and explained, "I'm not blaming you. I just think that as a secretary, you should act like one. Anyone with a bit of sense knows not to let their leader take care of them."

Wen Tang's lips trembled slightly.

She thought, that's true, their relationship isn't something that can be acknowledged publicly.

She began to eat the porridge by herself.

Lu Nianxin hooked Pei Heyan's arm, her tone suddenly softened, "I know you were worried about me last night and let me go home early. If I had known this was the case, I should have stayed with you."

"Seeing how there are no gender barriers, it would indeed be convenient to take care of Secretary Wen, sparing certain people from overestimating themselves and thinking they can become a phoenix by climbing onto a branch." As Lu Nianxin spoke, she leaned her head on Pei Heyan's shoulder.

The man did not refuse, and the pair not only appeared well-matched but also looked much like a married couple.

Wen Tang, silent, continued to eat her white porridge, enduring the strange looks from passersby.

It was contempt, disgust, disdain.

It made the porridge taste even blander to her.

Eventually, she put the porridge back on the bedside table.

Lu Nianxin continued to nag, "Why did you stop eating?"

"Getting healthy is the most important thing. Otherwise, how will you use your looks to secure a life of wealth and luxury in the future?"

Her words once again caught the ear of passersby, whose pointing fingers and scornful glances made Wen Tang clench the blanket tightly in private.

She was used to it by now, but still couldn't help feeling defiant, especially when mistaken as the homewrecker intruding on their relationship.

Wen Tang pursed her lips, trying to calm herself down.

The pain on her lower lip brought her back to reality.

It was from biting it while painstakingly dragging her injured leg the night before.

"Brother He Yan, why don't you go back first? I'll stay and take care of her," Lu Nianxin sat up, her eyes filled with fierce hostility.

Wen Tang didn't want to ask for further trouble. "Thanks to Miss Lu for your kindness, but I'm not so frail. I can take care of myself."

Lu Nianxin sneered, "Is this your true nature showing?" She continued, "You could take care of yourself, yet you had Pei Heyan stay here to accompany you all night. Was that on purpose?"

Her words reached Cao Yinqiong's ears, who then doubled back to the entrance of room 811.

She observed Lu Nianxin, then glanced at Wen Tang, sensing the hostility between them.

She curled up and knocked on the door.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

She then walked towards Wen Tang, which interrupted Lu Nianxin's words.

Cao Yinqiong looked up at the dripping IV bag and asked, "Does it still hurt? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"

Wen Tang's voice was a bit hoarse. "It hurts, and my eyelids feel heavy. My eyes are really dry."

Cao Yinqiong tucked her hands inside her white coat, "It's supposed to feel uncomfortable in the eyes."

She looked at Pei Heyan and Lu Nianxin, "The patient needs rest right now, she should avoid fatigue. Visiting is best arranged for after the patient wakes up in the afternoon."

Upon hearing this, Lu Nianxin stood up and challenged Cao Yinqiong, "Are you saying it's wrong to visit a patient?"

"Do you know how much money I can earn in an hour?" Her eyes carried a slightly contemptuous look. "Let me tell you, it's measured in tens of thousands."

"I'm already doing well to squeeze time out of my busy schedule to visit her, and she's just an insignificant subordinate," Lu Nianxin's eyes were filled with utter scorn.
