"My Pokémon is Alakazam!"
As Sabrina's voice echoed across the field, Alakazam materialized, ready for battle.
"Alakazam..."
Seeing that Sabrina had sent out her strongest, Luo Yuan knew he couldn't use Charmeleon or Dragonair.
His hand moved away from their Pokéballs.
"If that's the case... Gengar!"
With a snap of his fingers, a pair of red eyes lit up from within his shadow.
Ears, head, body...
A round, grinning Gengar slowly "floated" out of Luo Yuan's shadow, taking its place on the field.
A Ghost- and Poison-type Gengar vs. the Psychic-type Alakazam.
With their types, each side had ways to counter the other.
But Sabrina knew that Luo Yuan's Gengar was significantly stronger than her Alakazam.
So she didn't hold back, launching the first attack.
"Alakazam, Psybeam!"
Alakazam recognized this Gengar from their collaboration on the St. Anne and narrowed its eyes as a blue light flashed through them.
The spoons in its hands trembled slightly, crossing before it.
A prismatic beam of psychic energy surged toward Gengar in a probing assault.
Luo Yuan gestured to Gengar, signaling it to handle the fight on its own.
For these testing attacks, there was no need for direct orders.
Seeing Luo Yuan's gesture, Gengar knew it was time for some creative freedom.
"Heh heh!"
With a wicked chuckle, Gengar sprang into action.
Whoosh!
A dark blur zipped past.
Despite its round shape, Gengar moved with speed that seemed almost impossible for its form, dodging the Psybeam in an instant.
When it reappeared, it was already at Alakazam's side.
One stubby hand held a Shadow Ball, brimming with dark energy, which it hurled at Alakazam.
Whoosh!
Boom!
The Shadow Ball streaked through the air, leaving a trail of sound as it went.
Alakazam, still in high alert from its past battles alongside Gengar, wasn't about to take any chances.
Its spoons twitched, and Alakazam used Teleport to appear at the other end of the field, dodging just as the Shadow Ball exploded where it had been standing, leaving a crater several meters wide.
"Impressive!"
Sabrina's eyes sparkled as she assessed the power of Luo Yuan's Gengar.
No wonder it could take down Drake's Altaria without Luo Yuan even needing to give direct commands.
Gengar was undeterred by the miss, cackling as it quickly charged up a second Shadow Ball, aiming it at Alakazam again.
Sabrina called out, "Psycho Cut!"
Alakazam's eyes glowed brighter, a torrent of psychic energy gathering as it advanced on Gengar for the first time.
With a flick of its arm, it swung its spoon in a wide arc.
The psychic energy coalesced into a crescent-shaped blade that sliced through the air, cleaving the incoming Shadow Ball in half.
The broken halves of the Shadow Ball didn't explode immediately; they only detonated when they hit the ground behind Alakazam, sending a gust that made Alakazam's mustache flutter.
"Psychic!" Sabrina commanded, escalating the attack.
This time, it wasn't a probing move but a full-force Psychic assault.
Unlike the Exeggutor Gary had used, which Dratini could easily evade, Sabrina's Alakazam was not only more powerful but also vastly more skilled in controlling psychic energy.
In Luo Yuan's perception, waves of psychic force surrounded Alakazam, converging on Gengar like an unrelenting tide, forming an inescapable encirclement.
If that hit... even with Gengar's strength, the outcome wouldn't be pretty.
The warm-up was over.
Now, Luo Yuan finally spoke up.
"Gengar, Dark Pulse!"
"Heh heh!"
Gengar, who had been waiting eagerly, lit up with excitement at Luo Yuan's command.
With a sinister laugh, Gengar unleashed Dark Pulse.
A chilling, almost tangible aura of dark energy radiated from Gengar, quickly filling the space around it that hadn't already been seized by psychic energy.
The Dark Pulse clashed with Alakazam's Psychic.
As everyone knew, Dark-type moves dealt double damage against Psychic-types.
With a smirk, Luo Yuan watched as the two forces collided in the air, but it was only a moment before Alakazam's Psychic crumbled completely.
The dark energy surged across the battlefield, rapidly closing in on Alakazam.
Now Alakazam had two options.
It could take the Dark Pulse head-on, which, given the move's power and Gengar's level, would likely knock it out in a single hit.
Or...
"Could it be... she's going to use that already?"
Sabrina raised her hand, revealing the Keystone on her wrist.
"Whoa, Sabrina, isn't that a bit overboard?" Luo Yuan said, noticing her move.
This was just a Gym match; surely she didn't need to go all out with Mega Evolution?
Sabrina flashed a rare smile, casually brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Think of it as a practice match to test out a new ability."
Her eyes glowed blue.
In Luo Yuan's perception, he saw Sabrina's psychic frequency sync with Alakazam's, connecting them completely.
She raised her arm.
"Mega evolve, Alakazam!"
Flash!
A brilliant light flared from the Mega Stone on Sabrina's bracelet.
Simultaneously, Alakazam crossed its spoons, and golden and brown rays burst from its chest, intertwining with Sabrina's light, enveloping it entirely.
Boom!
The intense glow repelled the Dark Pulse, casting back the dark energy field.
Overhead, the symbol of Mega Evolution appeared and then faded away.
In its place, Alakazam now floated cross-legged in midair, cloaked in a purple robe with five spoons hovering around it. Its expression was serene, as though it had seen through all worldly illusions.
Powerful psychic waves radiated from Mega Alakazam.
"The sheer strength of its psychic energy must have doubled, if not more..."
Luo Yuan felt a growing sense of challenge.
Sabrina had synchronized her psychic energy with Alakazam's, amplifying its power beyond that of Drake's Altaria during the St. Anne incident.
Was he about to lose here?
"No... there's no way I'm going down."
If he lost here, how would he get his reward?
Sabrina had brought out Mega Evolution... but so could he. The bond between him and Gengar was nothing to scoff at.
Luo Yuan reached into his pocket, pulling out his wristband embedded with his Mega Stone.
"Gengar!"
At Luo Yuan's call, Gengar understood instantly, pulling a purple Mega Stone out of its mouth.
Strapping on his wristband, Luo Yuan's fingers brushed over the Keystone.
"Gengar, Mega Evolve!"
"Kehehe!"
A dazzling light enveloped Gengar.
As the light faded, Gengar's form had changed dramatically—it now lay flat against the ground, its entire upper half gleaming white, with a reddish hue spreading near the floor.
