Chapter 37 - I Don’t Want to Be a Heroic Spirit [37]

In truth, there was another reason Baobhan Sith became a curse user instead of a jujutsu sorcerer—a reason she had never shared with anyone.

The original story defined curse users as "evil sorcerers," a frustratingly vague term.

In the anime, such a loose definition didn't matter as much. But now that she was living in this world, Baobhan Sith had come to understand what curse users truly were. Simply put, curse users were individuals who either "threaten social order" or "oppose jujutsu sorcerers." Fulfilling either of these conditions, or both, branded someone a curse user.

In Jujutsu Kaisen, it was said that Gojo Satoru's birth shattered a balance that had held in the jujutsu world for nearly a thousand years. With his arrival, curses began appearing with greater frequency and intensity.

It was a concept that echoed the yin-yang philosophy, the balance of good and evil, light and dark. Ever since ancient times, these opposites maintained a fragile yet immutable equilibrium.

She recalled a line from Jackie Chan Adventures that she'd watched as a child, where Uncle had said something along the lines of, "When one demon is defeated, a stronger one is born to fill the void, keeping the balance of yin and yang."

Watching Jujutsu Kaisen, Baobhan Sith had noticed something interesting.

When exactly did Suguru Geto turn to the dark side?

The answer: when Gojo Satoru mastered the Reversal Curse Technique and became the true "strongest of the modern era."

Was this a mere coincidence? Perhaps not.

On the surface, Gojo's rise to power put pressure on Geto, and their increasing separations meant Gojo failed to notice Geto's growing despair. There were countless reasons for Geto's fall.

But with the lens of yin-yang balance, Baobhan Sith developed another theory.

Gojo's birth alone had disrupted a millennium-old balance in the jujutsu world, sparking a rise in curse activity. What happened when Gojo reached the peak of his power and became the "strongest of the modern era"? What did fate do to maintain the balance?

Perhaps it caused another Special Grade sorcerer to betray the side of "good" and join the forces of "evil."

It was a brilliant move, simultaneously weakening the "light" and bolstering the "dark."

If this theory held true, then many other events would make sense.

During the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons incident, Yuta Okkotsu, a Special Grade sorcerer, joined the "good side," and Suguru Geto, representing the "evil side," was defeated, once again upsetting the balance between good and evil.

And so, the new villain, Brain, emerged, bringing with him the "strongest of a thousand years ago"—Ryomen Sukuna.

Thus, the delicate balance between good and evil was reestablished, and the plot of the anime began.

Baobhan Sith had initially chosen to be a curse user because she'd thought, I'm probably at least as powerful as Gojo, right? So if I join the side of the curse users, maybe Geto won't need to turn to darkness for the sake of balance.

But so far, Baobhan Sith hadn't noticed any significant impact from her decision. Or maybe I haven't been 'bad' enough…?

Can't be a good person, can't be a proper villain—she suddenly felt like a failure.

"Jasmine, would you like to study at Jujutsu High?"

Baobhan Sith's sudden question caught everyone off guard.

Jasmine looked up, her expression wavering like a kitten on the verge of being abandoned. But before that look could fully form, Baobhan Sith reached over and gently patted her head.

"I'm not abandoning you. In fact, you've done nothing wrong—far from it. I'm proud of everything you've accomplished, Jasmine. You're my most treasured little sister, so calm down and listen."

Baobhan Sith softened her tone as much as possible to soothe Jasmine's anxiety.

Her usually mischievous gray eyes now shone like a calm lake under a summer night, reflecting a field of starlight.

"I want you to be happy, Jasmine."

"I want you to look back on your life one day and smile, genuinely. I want your canvas to be filled with all kinds of colors—more and more."

"I know you want to stay by my side, I know you want to help me. But I don't want to hold you back. I can be your sister, your mentor, your teacher, even your pillar of strength—but that shouldn't be everything. You deserve friends who'll share your dreams, juniors who'll look up to you, and rivals to challenge you."

After speaking with Da Vinci earlier, Baobhan Sith had done some serious thinking.

Leaving aside the inevitable day when she'd move on to other worlds, even if she stayed here, she wanted Jasmine to be surrounded by more people.

"I want people other than me to stand by you, not because you're my little sister or because I'm your guardian, but because you're Jasmine. People who'll be drawn to you, who'll anchor you to this world."

"A life worth living is filled with meetings and partings. With every encounter, we learn to understand others and ourselves; with every goodbye, we grow stronger and wiser. Both the comings and goings are precious."

Jasmine placed her hand over Baobhan Sith's, feeling a warmth seep into her palm as her sister's words echoed softly in her mind.

"Baobhan Sith… Are you still treating me like a child?"

"Do you feel like you've already grown up?"

Baobhan Sith's hand ruffled Jasmine's soft gray hair.

"Growth isn't something that happens just because you've survived danger or experienced loss. Maturity might happen overnight, but growing up takes time. It's in the little things: more hair on your pillow, a favorite snack disappearing from store shelves… All these tiny disappointments add up, and only then can you say you've truly grown."

…Wait. Didn't she hear that somewhere before?

Baobhan Sith's brow furrowed as she realized she'd just repeated something word-for-word, sneaking a glance at the contemplative look on Nanami's face.

Jasmine wanted to grow up.

As long as Baobhan Sith treated her as a child, Jasmine could only follow behind, never able to stand as her equal, never able to lighten her burden.

But if growing up meant saying goodbye to her sister…

"You don't have to decide right now."

Baobhan Sith pressed down on Jasmine's head, cutting off her train of thought.

"I just thought of it since the Jujutsu High people were here. This is a big decision, one that will shape your future. I want you to take as much time as you need to choose, and make sure it's one you'll never regret."

"So, that's all for now."

Baobhan Sith turned to Nanami and Haibara.

"If Jasmine decides she'd like to join Jujutsu High, I'd appreciate it if you could lend her a hand."

"Of course! If it's for Miss Tristan, it's as good as done! Leave it to me!" Haibara said without hesitation, beaming with pride, prompting Nanami to look away with a sigh.

Compared to Haibara, Nanami's response was much more measured.

"…I'll put in a word at Jujutsu High on her behalf."

"Yes, that's enough."

Baobhan Sith might distrust the higher-ups in the jujutsu world, but she trusted Masamichi Yaga.

She wondered if Yaga had already become the principal of Tokyo Jujutsu High by now…
