Chereads / Alpha's Rivalry / Chapter 3 - First Day at the Company

Chapter 3 - First Day at the Company

In the bustling middle school hallway, students crowded around the notice board, buzzing with excitement as they checked their latest exam rankings. Rayden stood off to the side, leaning against a wall with a smug smile. The moment Rivian spotted him, their eyes met, and Rayden's smirk grew even wider.

"Guess who's first on top again?" Rayden taunted. "Oh, right, that's me. Better luck next time, Rivian."

Rivian rolled his eyes, crossing his arms. "You're acting like it's a big deal. You know I'm going to pass you next time, so don't get too comfortable."

Rayden chuckled. "I wouldn't count on it. You're second for a reason, Rivian. It suits you."

Rivian leaned in slightly, his voice filled with determination. "If you think that's going to make me back down, you're just wasting your breath. You may have a lead now, but that's only because I allowed it."

Rayden smirked, leaning in closer until their breaths mingled. "Keep telling yourself that, Rivian. Maybe one day, you'll actually believe it."

Rivian stepped back with a smirk. "I don't need to believe anything. I'll show you in the next exam. Then we'll see who's still talking."

Rayden's low, taunting laugh followed. "You always try, but you always fail."

Rivian huffed, turning away. "Enjoy the spotlight while you can, Rayden. It won't last forever."

They shared a long, tense stare, each silently vowing to claim the top spot next time. With a slight nod, they parted ways, the fire of competition fueling them for the next challenge.

Rivian entered Evergreen Construction's headquarters with a sense of pride and responsibility. His father, Robert, led him through the building, pointing out the company's achievements and sharing stories of projects that shaped the city's skyline. Rivian's footsteps echoed on the polished marble floor, underscoring the spacious grandeur of the place.

The ten-story building stood as a testament to Evergreen Construction's success. Over the years, the company had brought towering skyscrapers, luxury hotels, residential houses, and intricate bridges to life across the city. Standing within its walls, Rivian felt the weight of his new role and the familiarity of a place he had known since childhood, now seeing it with fresh purpose.

As they approached the reception area on the ground floor, Rivian noticed the sleek design of the space. The receptionist greeted them with a professional smile. "Good morning, Mr. CEO," she said, her voice smooth and welcoming.

"Good morning, Sarah," Robert replied, nodding in acknowledgment before leading Rivian to the elevator.

Once inside, Robert turned to him. "Welcome, son. It's been a long journey to get here, and I couldn't be prouder to have you stepping up. You and Rayden have a big task ahead, but I know you both have what it takes to take this company to new heights."

At the mention of Rayden, Rivian recalled last night's dinner, where he had seen Rayden for the first time in years. He was struck by how much Rayden had changed. Now, they were set to work together as co-CEOs, each inheriting their fathers' positions. Rivian wasn't entirely sure how well they would manage sharing responsibilities, given their competitive history, but he was determined to make it work.

"Thanks, Dad," Rivian replied, a mix of pride and apprehension in his voice. "I know this won't be easy, especially with Rayden. We were always competitive growing up, and I'm not sure how well we'll handle running things together."

Rivian took a steadying breath. "But I'll do my best. I want to make this work for you, for the company, and for myself."

Robert studied him for a moment, his expression thoughtful. "I know you will, son. You've always had the drive to succeed, and Rayden's the same way. But don't forget, this is about balance. You both have to find a way to support each other, even when it's tough. It won't always be easy, but that's where growth happens." He placed a reassuring hand on Rivian's shoulder. "Trust in each other, and in your strengths. The company needs both of you."

Rivian nodded, a weight settling in his chest as he processed his father's words. He had always admired Robert's leadership, but now, standing at the precipice of inheriting it, he realized the depth of responsibility it carried.

"I'll remember that," Rivian said, his voice steady but filled with resolve. "I won't disappoint you."

"I know you won't, son," Robert said, his voice filled with confidence. "You've got everything it takes. Now it's time to show the world what you can do."

Rivian met his father's gaze, feeling a surge of determination. This was his moment, and he was ready to take it on.

As they stepped onto the tenth floor, Rivian noticed hushed whispers, and the air was thick with a sense of formality and quiet efficiency. Employees were working diligently, their faces showing focus, some with a hint of tension. The hum of keyboards and quiet phone conversations filled the background. A few people glanced at Robert and Rivian as they passed by, whispering quietly among themselves. Some greeted his father with a polite, "Good morning, CEO."

The women and men in the offices couldn't help but sneak glances at Rivian, their eyes lingering a little longer than necessary. Whispers rippled through the group, and the words "handsome" and "beautiful" were exchanged in hushed tones, some barely managing to keep their admiration from slipping into audible remarks. A few women exchanged smiles, clearly impressed by his striking looks and confident presence, while the men subtly nodded in approval, wondering who the man was with their boss.

"Here's your office, son," Robert said, opening a door and gesturing for Rivian to step inside. The room was modern and painted white, with stylish black furniture. Behind the large black marble desk in the center of the room were big windows that let in lots of natural light and offered a great view of the city below. The windows had nice blinds for privacy when needed. A comfortable chair was set behind the desk, waiting for Rivian to sit down.

Next to the desk, tall shelves displayed carefully selected books, awards, and a photo album. In one corner, sofas were arranged around a small table, making a cozy spot for breaks or naps. A television mounted on the wall offered entertainment and information, while a sleek air conditioning unit kept the room cool and comfortable. The office also had a private bathroom with a sleek black door, adding an extra level of convenience and privacy.

"Son, this is your assistant, Archer Lane," Robert introduced, nodding toward the man who had come up so quietly behind them that Rivian hadn't even noticed him. "And Archer, meet my son, Rivian," Robert added with pride.

Archer smiled politely, his posture confident and composed. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir Rivian," he said warmly.

"Nice to meet you too, Archer," Rivian replied. Archer was an alpha, evident from his scent, which carried hints of cedarwood and spice. Although Archer appeared younger than Rivian, his vibrant red hair and striking blue eyes gave him an intensity that was hard to ignore.

Archer exuded an energy that felt reassuringly dependable, and Rivian sensed that his father had chosen Archer specifically to ensure Rivian's smooth transition into the role.

Robert clapped his hand on Rivian's shoulder. "Archer's been with the company for six months, so I trust he can help you navigate everything you need around here."

Rivian nodded, appreciating the trust his father had placed in Archer. Having someone like Archer by his side might make the transition easier.

Robert stepped out of the office, motioning for Rivian to follow him as he made his way toward the center of the open office space. The hum of conversations and the sound of typing softened as Robert raised his voice, commanding attention from the team members who were engrossed in their tasks.

"Everyone, may I have your attention, please?" Robert called out, his voice steady and authoritative. Conversations ceased, and all eyes turned toward the duo.

"This is my son, Rivian," Robert announced proudly, gesturing to Rivian. "Today, Rivian will be joining us as co-CEO of Evergreen Construction, taking my position as I prepare for retirement. I have every confidence in his abilities, and I know he will bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to our ongoing projects."

A mix of curious looks and slight nervousness crossed the faces of the employees. Rivian felt the weight of their attention but straightened his shoulders, ready to take on the role his father had prepared him for.

"Rivian has spent years learning the ins and outs of the business," Robert continued, his tone warm and reassuring. "He's not just my son; he's an accomplished professional who has a passion for construction and design. I trust that you will extend your support to him as you have shown me over the years. He's eager to learn from all of you and contribute to our continued success."

Rivian noticed a few nods of acknowledgment in the crowd, and it bolstered his confidence. "Thank you, everyone," he said, taking a step forward. "I'm excited to be here and to work alongside such a talented team. I know that this company has made a big name, and I'm determined to uphold it while pushing us toward new heights."

The room erupted into applause as the employees welcomed him warmly. Once the noise began to die down, Rivian caught Rayden's eye across the room. The other Alpha regarded him with a stoic expression, his cold demeanor still intact, but there was a flicker of something else in his gaze that Rivian couldn't quite decipher.

"Now, let's get back to work," Robert said, a smile touching his lips. "We have big projects ahead of us, and Rivian will be diving right in. I know you all will support him in this transition."

As the employees returned to their tasks, Robert leaned closer to Rivian. "You did well, son. Remember, they're watching you closely. Prove to them you're worthy of this position."

"I will, Dad," Rivian replied, determination coursing through him. "I won't let you down."

Robert placed a hand on Rivian's shoulder, a gesture of reassurance. "I know you won't. Just keep your head high and stay focused on what's important. This company thrives on collaboration, so make sure to work closely with Rayden. There's a lot you can learn from him, despite your history."

"I'll do my best," Rivian said, glancing toward Rayden, who was now approaching them.

"Rayden, you're back," Robert said, his voice brightening as he greeted the young Alpha.

Rayden nodded curtly, his expression still serious. He glanced at Rivian, offering a small acknowledgment before turning his focus back to Robert.

"I hope the meeting went well," Robert asked.

"It went well," Rayden assured him.

"Good to hear," Robert replied, then looked between the two young men. "I have high hopes for both of you. With your talents and hard work, I'm confident you'll lead this company to new heights." The two men nodded in agreement, a mix of determination and unspoken rivalry in their eyes.

Just then, a short male with black hair and brown eyes hurried up behind Rayden, holding a stack of papers that looked like they might spill from his hands at any moment. He stumbled a little, his cheeks turning bright red as he stepped forward and greeted Robert with a nervous voice, "Good morning, Mr. Hayes!"

"Good morning, Kai," Robert replied warmly. "You're just in time. This is my son, Rivian." He gestured to Rivian, who gave a friendly smile as Kai nodded at him. "And Rivian, this is Kai Hwang, Rayden's assistant."

As Kai and Robert continued their conversation after the introductions, Rivian couldn't help but notice the sweet scent lingering around Kai, a soft, inviting fragrance of vanilla and fresh flowers. Kai was an Omega.

Rivian's eyes widened slightly. Rayden had an Omega assistant, and he found himself unconsciously staring, curious about the situation. But just as he did, Rayden stepped in front of Kai, blocking his view and meeting Rivian's gaze with a cold, unmistakable warning.

Rivian blinked, taken aback. Rayden had never acted this way before, and the sudden show of protectiveness left him both surprised and unsettled.
