Chapter 28 - The Final Countdown

The morning broke with a sharp chill in the air, despite the blazing cityscape that surrounded the safe house. Layla stood by the window, staring out at the horizon, her mind replaying the details of their plan over and over again. This was no longer just a mission—it was a final stand, a chance to take down Aiden once and for all.

Behind her, the team stirred, their movements filled with a mix of nervous energy and quiet determination.

"Coffee?" Danielle offered, holding up a steaming mug as she joined Layla by the window.

"Thanks," Layla murmured, taking it without breaking her gaze from the view.

Danielle studied her leader for a moment. "You don't have to carry all of this on your shoulders, you know."

Layla turned to face her, offering a faint smile. "I'm not. You guys are here, aren't you?"

Danielle chuckled softly. "Yeah, but you're the one who has to make the big calls. Just... don't forget to lean on us when you need to."

"I won't," Layla promised, though the weight in her chest told her otherwise.

Pre-Mission Tensions

The rest of the team gathered in the main room as the sun climbed higher. The blueprints, guard schedules, and Rachel's notes were spread out across the table, illuminated by a single overhead light.

"Okay," Layla began, her voice steady despite the anxiety simmering beneath her calm exterior. "Here's the plan. Danielle and Marcus will create a diversion at the service entrance. Ethan and I will enter through the main lobby. Once we're inside, we'll rendezvous in the stairwell leading to the penthouse."

"What kind of diversion are we talking about?" Marcus asked, leaning back in his chair with a grin that hinted at mischief.

"Something loud but quick," Layla said. "We don't want to draw too much attention, just enough to shift the guards away from their posts."

Marcus nodded. "Got it. Leave the noise to me."

Danielle frowned, her brow furrowed. "The vault's security is still a big problem. Even if we make it to the penthouse, we don't have the access codes."

"Rachel said there's a secondary keypad near the vault," Layla replied. "I'll handle that once we're inside."

Ethan, who had been quietly observing the conversation, finally spoke. "And what happens if Aiden shows up while we're in there?"

Layla met his gaze, her expression unwavering. "Then we deal with him."

A heavy silence settled over the room as the weight of her words sank in.

The Calm Before the Storm

As the team dispersed to prepare for the mission, Layla found herself alone in the kitchen, staring at the remnants of her untouched breakfast. The nerves she had kept at bay all morning now clawed at her chest, threatening to overwhelm her.

"You okay?" Ethan's voice broke the silence, and Layla looked up to see him leaning against the doorframe.

"Just thinking," she said, forcing a small smile.

Ethan walked over and sat down across from her. "You don't have to pretend with me, Layla. I know how much this means to you."

Layla sighed, running a hand through her hair. "It's not just about me. If we fail, all of this—the risks we've taken, the people who've helped us—it'll all be for nothing."

Ethan reached across the table, his hand covering hers. "We're not going to fail. You've got this. We've got this."

For a moment, Layla allowed herself to believe him. She squeezed his hand briefly before pulling away, her resolve hardening once more.

"Thanks, Ethan," she said, her voice stronger now.

The Mission Begins

Nightfall came quickly, and with it, the time to act. The team gathered near the high-rise, each of them dressed in dark, tactical gear.

"Ready?" Layla asked, her gaze sweeping over the group.

Danielle nodded, her jaw set. "Let's do this."

Marcus grinned, holding up a small device. "Let's make some noise."

Ethan stood beside Layla, his expression unreadable but his presence steady and reassuring.

As Marcus and Danielle moved to their positions, Layla and Ethan approached the building's main entrance. Layla's heart pounded in her chest, but her steps were confident. She couldn't afford to show weakness now.

Inside, the lobby was quiet, save for the low murmur of the receptionist speaking into her headset. Layla and Ethan moved casually, blending in as they approached the stairwell.

"Clear," Ethan whispered as they slipped through the door.

Layla nodded, her mind already focused on the next steps. They began to climb, their footsteps silent on the metal stairs.

A Sudden Complication

They reached the floor just below the penthouse when a sudden noise stopped them in their tracks. Voices echoed from above—guards, by the sound of it.

Layla held up a hand, signaling for Ethan to stop. They pressed themselves against the wall, listening intently.

"They're doing a sweep," Layla murmured. "We need to move now."

Ethan nodded, his hand already on the weapon holstered at his side. Together, they crept up the final flight of stairs, their movements careful and deliberate.

The door to the penthouse loomed ahead, its sleek design a stark contrast to the cold, utilitarian stairwell. Layla pulled out a small device from her pocket—a jammer Rachel had provided to disable the door's electronic lock.

"Cover me," she whispered to Ethan as she knelt in front of the door.

Ethan stood guard, his eyes scanning the stairwell for any sign of movement.

"Hurry," he muttered, his grip tightening on his weapon.

Layla worked quickly, her fingers deftly attaching the jammer to the keypad. A soft click signaled success, and the door slid open.

They stepped inside, the luxurious interior of the penthouse sprawling before them. Layla's breath caught for a moment—it was a stark reminder of the life she had left behind.

"Focus," Ethan whispered, snapping her out of her thoughts.

Layla nodded, her gaze hardening as she moved deeper into the penthouse. Somewhere in here was the vault that held the key to Aiden's empire.

And she was going to find it.
