Chapter 8 - Chapter 8;I’ll stay

'Sardaunas? What or who are those?' Alice pondered in confusion. She had never encountered that word before, and although she was eager to ask, she felt it wasn't her place to do so.

Meanwhile Lance appeared to drift back into his own thoughts, after muttering that one word, leaving Alice to stand there feeling a bit out of place and unsure of what to do next.

So Alice who had nothing better to do stood there, feeling awkward as she discreetly stared at him. He was so incredibly good-looking it almost hurt.

Throughout her twenty years of life, she had only dated two guys, both of whom turned out to be complete jerks, so she hardly considered them real men. Not to mention, they were just average-looking, unlike this breathtaking creature of a man before her. He was just too good to be true.

Ever since her experiences with her exes, she had stopped dating altogether, still feeling a bit traumatized by the way her past partners had treated her, but looking at lance made her reconsider all her choices about dating.

'I wonder if I'm his type' Alice thought, before catching herself and quickly reprimanding her own thoughts by giving herself a light pinch on the hip.

Alice didn't perceive herself as beautiful; instead, she considered herself just enough. Despite frequently receiving compliments from various men regarding her looks and body, she tended to brush them off. She was well aware that their intentions were often superficial, primarily driven by a desire to get into her pants rather than any genuine appreciation for who she was as a person.

As she noticed that Lance was taking his time to speak, she decided to break the silence. "Since you're awake, I'll go bring him in," she said, trying to keep her tone neutral.

"Who?" he asked, sounding slightly curious.

"A man named Devon. He didn't share with me how you two were related, but I thought it was important to let you know," she replied coolly, making an effort to keep the details she possessed under wraps, aware that the information could lead to further complications.

"Bring him in," Lance ordered, his voice carrying a sense of authority that made Alice frown slightly. She wasn't fond of his commanding tone, but she knew she had to comply; after all, he was a VIP patient, and she couldn't risk disrespecting him. Despite her reservations, she understood the importance of following his instructions to ensure his care and comfort during his stay.

She had always viewed herself as a confident individual, someone who could easily express her thoughts and feelings without hesitation. However, ever since the traumatic event that had taken place two years ago, she had learned the importance of being mindful of her words and the impact they could have on others. This newfound awareness had changed her approach to communication, making her more cautious and reflective. The upcoming Monday was going to serve as an even clearer reminder of the lessons she had learned, as it would bring back memories that were both painful and significant, forcing her to confront the emotions she had tried to keep hidden away.

Nodding her head, Alice stepped out of the room to call in Devon. As she exited, she noticed Devon looking up from his phone, a knowing smile on his face, as if he had anticipated this moment. He stood up from the chair where he had been sitting and walked confidently toward the hospital room, entering and closing the door behind him. Wanting to respect their privacy, Alice decided to remain outside. She made her way to one of the chairs in the reception area and sank into it, leaning back as exhaustion washed over her.

Just then, Alissa, who had also finished her patrol, approached and settled down next to Alice. With a tired expression, she asked, "Done?" Alice nodded in response, then returned the question, "You?" Alissa nodded as well, sharing in the fatigue that came with their demanding shifts.

After a while, Alissa leaned forward, studying Alice, and after a long time she noticed that Alice wasn't making any moves to leave. While looking around she curiously asked,

"Are you waiting for someone?"

Taken aback by Alissa's abrupt question, Alice answered a bit too quickly, "Oh, it's nobody." She then added, "Alissa, I think you should go since you're done. Don't worry, I'll handle the rest."

Alissa sensed that something was off, so she shook her head and replied, "I can't possibly leave you to handle this all alone. I'll stay."
