Chapter 12 - Chapter 12. Aldryn Kaelthorn

The city of Luminara was alive with activity, filled with merchants hawking their goods, scholars deep in debate over scrolls, and street performers captivating small crowds with their magical displays. Arthur weaved his way through the bustling streets, his gaze often drawn to the towering spires of Ithica Academy in the distance. While the sight was impressive, he found himself more interested in the intricate details of the capital itself - the unique architecture, the diverse wares on display, and the stories written on the faces of its residents.

Suddenly, a voice pierced through the clamor of the crowd, causing Arthur to stop in his tracks. He turned towards the source and instinctively reached for the hilt of his sword. Standing before him was a man in his forties, with auburn hair starting to show strands of gray. His tailored coat featured an emblem that immediately caught Arthur's eye - a silver phoenix clutching a staff adorned with ancient runes; the crest of Ithica Academy.

"I couldn't help but notice your gear," the man said, his eyes flickering to the gauntlet on Arthur's left arm. There was curiosity in his tone and a friendly demeanor. "Those runes are remarkable. My apologies for not introducing myself earlier - I am Aldryn Kaelthorn, professor of runic studies at Ithica Academy."

Arthur relaxed slightly, though he maintained a neutral expression. "Arthur," he replied simply.

"A strong name," Aldryn commented with a small smile. "Would you mind if I took a closer look at your equipment? The craftsmanship is extraordinary, especially for something runed. I don't mean to intrude, but it's not every day I come across such precise work."

Arthur hesitated briefly, weighing the potential risks of drawing attention to his creations. However, Aldryn's interest seemed genuine and there was no hint of suspicion in his demeanor - just pure curiosity.

"Sure," Arthur said, raising his arm slightly to allow Aldryn a better view.

The professor leaned in, inspecting the gauntlet with keen, analytical eyes. "The alignment of the runes is flawless," he murmured, his fingers hovering just above the surface. "And their interaction...it's seamless. Did you forge this yourself?"

Arthur nodded. "Yes, I did."

Aldryn straightened up, an impressed smile spreading across his face. "Remarkable. In fact, more than remarkable - extraordinary. Talent like this is rare, Arthur. If you have some time to spare, would you be willing to sit and chat? There's a quaint café not far from here and I'd love to buy you a drink for your time."

Arthur studied him for a moment, still considering his options. But there was something genuine about Aldryn and a conversation with someone who truly understood the intricacies of runes could prove beneficial.

"Alright," he agreed with a nod. "Lead the way."

The two walked side by side through the bustling streets, Aldryn occasionally stealing glances at Arthur's gear with disguised fascination. Before long, they arrived at a cozy café nestled in a quiet corner of the district, its peaceful atmosphere promising an intriguing discussion ahead.

Arthur sat at a small table with Aldryn in the cozy corner of the café. The aroma of freshly brewed tea filled the air and the low murmur of conversations from other patrons created a peaceful ambiance. It was Arthur's first time in such a place. In his hometown, there were no stores solely dedicated to drinks, showing how different the capital city is compared to what he's used to.

As Aldryn sipped his tea, he couldn't help but admire the gauntlet that Arthur had brought. "You have a true talent here, Arthur," he complimented genuinely. "The precision in your craftsmanship suggests years of experience, and yet you can't be more than seventeen years old."

Arthur shrugged modestly. "I've been working with weapons and forging since I was a child, and runework just came naturally to me."

"Came naturally," Aldryn repeated with a soft chuckle. "For most people, runes are an unsolvable puzzle. Even with guidance, it takes years to create something functional, let alone exceptional. And yet here you are, wearing gear that most students wont ever be able to make." Arthur met Aldryn's gaze but remained silent for a moment. His tone wasn't confrontational; it was simply curious.

"Is that why you stopped me? To figure out where I learned all of this?" Aldryn shook his head, a small smile forming on his lips. "No, no, I'm not trying to pry. I understand how rare this knowledge is, and I respect your desire to keep it to yourself. What intrigues me is your natural talent. It's extraordinary, Arthur. I don't say that lightly."

Arthur leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms thoughtfully. "So what are you really getting at?" he asked directly.

Aldryn set his cup down with a gentle clink and leaned forward, lowering his voice slightly. "I want you to consider joining my class when you get into Ithica Academy. Your understanding of runes surpasses that of most students, whether self-taught or not. With proper guidance and resources, I believe you could refine your skills even further and maybe even rediscover techniques lost for centuries."

Arthur raised an eyebrow skeptically. "You sound pretty confident that I'll be accepted."

Aldryn smiled, his eyes glinting with certainty. "I would bet my reputation on it. The admissions process values talent, but also resourcefulness and potential. You have demonstrated both, Arthur. Rarely do we see a student with such a talent for runework like yours—most are still learning the basics. You're already working at a level that few ever reach, and that's something we could use in my class."

Arthur looked down at his gauntlet, tracing his fingers over the intricate runes carved into the metal. He thought about how challenging it had been to learn magic on his own and how much easier it could be with proper guidance. "Why me?" he asked softly.

Aldryn studied him for a moment, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "Because runework is a difficult subject. Very few students make it into my class, as most struggle to grasp the concepts or find the material too demanding. But you have already mastered a level of rune craft that most people never even approach. I believe that kind of talent, combined with the right resources and guidance, could take you even further. The academy is full of students, but there is a real need for those who already have a strong foundation to build upon. And that's where you come in."

Arthur sat in silence, absorbing Aldryn's words. In his mind, there was never any doubt about joining Ithica. The academy offered a chance to hone his skills with the help of the best mentors, something he could not achieve on his own. However, it was reassuring to hear Aldryn affirm his decision and express confidence in Arthur's abilities.

"I'll be ready when the doors open," Arthur declared confidently.

Aldryn's eyes gleamed with approval. "I knew you would make the right choice. It is rare to find someone as skilled and curious as you are. You will be a valuable addition to my class."

Arthur nodded, a small smile forming on his lips. The thought of being surrounded by like-minded individuals who shared his passion for runes and could push him further excited him. It was not just about acquiring knowledge; it was about embracing challenges and seeing how far he could go under proper guidance.

"Just remember to keep an open mind," Aldryn continued, his tone turning serious. "The academy will challenge and surprise you in ways you can't imagine. And don't be afraid to question what you think you know. That is how we grow."

Arthur chuckled softly. "That is the plan."

Aldryn's smile widened. "I am eager to see what you can accomplish. It is not often that I have students who are already ahead of the game."

Arthur acknowledged the weight of Aldryn's words but remained unfazed. He knew there was still much for him to learn, and that was precisely why he had chosen Ithica. He had no doubts about his decision.

As they both stood up, Aldryn extended a firm handshake. "I look forward to seeing you at Ithica, Arthur. You won't regret it."

Arthur shook his hand firmly in return. "Thank you, Professor. I'll see you there."

As he strolled away from the cozy café and back into the bustling streets of Luminara, Arthur's mind was buzzing with anticipation for what lay ahead. The academy, with its new challenges and limitless knowledge, was exactly what he needed to reignite his passion for magic. For the first time in a while, his future felt crystal clear and brimming with possibilities beyond his wildest dreams.

With a sense of purpose propelling him forward, Arthur entered the inn and was immediately enveloped by the welcoming warmth of the fire. He made his way towards Rowan's table, where his friend sat sipping on a mug of ale. As soon as Rowan caught sight of him, he lifted his mug in a friendly gesture.

"Finally! You took your sweet time," Rowan exclaimed with a wide grin, setting down his drink.

Arthur couldn't help but smirk as he settled into the seat across from him. "Well, I had some important business to attend to."

Rowan raised an eyebrow in curiosity. "Do tell."

Arthur leaned back in his chair, looking relaxed. "I happened to cross paths with the renowned runic professor and he offered me a coveted spot in his class."

A look of disbelief crossed Rowan's face. "No way! That's incredible, man! Are you going to accept?"

Arthur's smirk widened. "As long as I pass the entrance exam, then yes, I will be attending. Things are definitely looking up."

mn right, they are!" Rowan exclaimed with pride. "I always knew you had it in you. This is a monumental opportunity!"

Arthur chuckled at his friend's excitement. "Thanks, but save your celebrations for when I actually pass the test."

Rowan waved off his concerns confidently. "Pshh, you'll breeze through it without breaking a sweat."

Although he appreciated Rowan's faith in him, Arthur couldn't help but feel a twinge of nervousness about the upcoming exam. But before he could dwell on it, Rowan's expression turned thoughtful.

"Hey, since we have some time before school starts, could you teach me some basics about runes? I've seen you use them in battle and it's mind-blowing. It'd be great to have a head start before classes begin."

Arthur raised an eyebrow, mulling over the request for a moment. "You want me to teach you before school even starts?"

"Yeah! I know I won't become a master overnight, but if you can give me some pointers, it would really help. I have a basic understanding, but some guidance from someone experienced like you would be fantastic."

Arthur couldn't resist a small smirk at his friend's eagerness. "Fine. I can show you how to carve some runes and explain their functions. But don't expect me to reveal all my secrets just yet."

Rowan chuckled. "No worries, I'm not trying to steal your techniques. Just enough to get the hang of it."

Arthur leaned back with a nod of agreement. "Alright, consider it done. But remember, mastering runes takes time and practice."

Rowan beamed with excitement. "Thanks, Arthur! I owe you one."

With a small smile, Arthur replied, "Just think of it as getting a head start on your magical education."

The two settled into an easy conversation, the fire crackling in the background as they discussed the amount of time remaining before their arrival at Ithica Academy and what they could learn before then.
