Holding the Badge of Ability in his hand, Ash solemnly tucked it away.
"I've finally earned the Badge of Ability!"
"Pika-Pika!" Pikachu jumped excitedly, striking a triumphant pose.
"That was an absolutely fantastic Frontier Challenge battle," Scott remarked as he approached, his admiration for Ash evident. "You and your Pokémon communicated seamlessly throughout the match. I must admit, Ash, your abilities are impressive—on par with Anabel's, if not more."
With a nod, Scott added, "Now that you've defeated Anabel, only one challenge remains in the Battle Frontier: the ultimate Frontier Brain at the Battle Pyramid. It's located near Pewter City right now, though finding it won't be straightforward."
Scott smirked knowingly, leaving the finer details unsaid. After all, the Battle Pyramid wasn't just a building—it was a colossal flying fortress, a fact known to only a select few.
But unbeknownst to Scott, Ash already knew.
"Mr. Scott, I'm not planning to head to the Battle Pyramid just yet," Ash responded. "I need some time to train my Pokémon and take care of other important matters first."
Misty and May exchanged glances, understanding exactly what Ash meant.
He still had unfinished business—reuniting with old friends like Primeape near Celadon City and Larvitar at Mt. Silver.
(May had already heard about Ash's Kanto adventures from Misty.)
Scott nodded approvingly. "A wise decision. I'll tell you this: the Pyramid's Frontier Brain is immensely powerful. In full force, there are few in the Kanto region who can match him, save perhaps Lance, the Dragon Master. Prepare well, Ash. I'm looking forward to seeing you shine in the Battle Pyramid. I'll contact you if anything important comes up. Good luck."
A Warm InvitationAfter parting ways with Scott, Anabel extended an invitation to visit her home. Ash quickly agreed, and Misty and May, now friends with Anabel, were equally enthusiastic.
Anabel's house wasn't far—just a short walk through the lush forested environment of the island. The journey was filled with laughter, with Pikachu, Squirtle, and Misty's Azurill playing alongside the group. The atmosphere was warm and cheerful.
Watching Ash interact with his Pokémon and friends, Anabel felt an inexplicable reluctance in her heart.
This boy wasn't just a talented Trainer. His bright eyes radiated warmth, his care for Pokémon was genuine, and his ability to understand their emotions was rare and profound.
And he'd defeated her in a battle that showcased her own specialty.
She found herself admiring him more than she anticipated.
"Anabel? Lost in thought?" Ash's voice brought her back to reality. "Your Pokémon were injured during our battle. Let me heal them. My Aura powers can handle minor wounds."
"Pika-pika!" Pikachu chimed in agreement.
Surprised but trusting, Anabel released her Alakazam, Metagross, and Espeon. Ash examined their injuries carefully before activating his Aura to heal them. His focused expression left Anabel momentarily speechless.
As Ash treated Espeon, his mind wandered to Eevee's other potential evolutions. He recalled the undiscovered Fairy-type Sylveon and resolved to document all of Eevee's evolution forms once Professor Oak's Fairy-type research was published.
He could already imagine the professor's astonished reaction.
A Feast of Friendship
Anabel hosted Ash and his friends for two days, during which they bonded over training, meals, and games. Misty and May even joined Anabel in the kitchen, showcasing the cooking skills Ash had taught them. Each prepared a dish, half for fun and half to compete with Anabel's culinary prowess.
When they turned their expectant gazes toward Ash, he couldn't refuse.
Ash's masterful cooking easily outshone everyone else's, his dishes leaving even Anabel in awe.
He wasn't just a great Trainer; he was a treasure trove of talents. Anabel's admiration for Ash reached new heights.
Farewell… and a Proposal
On the third morning, Ash and his friends stood at Anabel's doorstep, ready to depart. Anabel had promised gifts for everyone, though she had yet to appear.
Misty and May had already received theirs:
For Misty, Anabel had prepared a custom Water-type Poké Ball (i.e, Dive Ball) and a letter detailing her lifelong research on Water Pokémon, knowing Misty aspired to be a Water Pokémon Master.
For May, Anabel provided insights on understanding Pokémon emotions, along with a handcrafted hairpin—a nod to May's dream of becoming a top Coordinator.
As for Ash, his gift remained a mystery.
Finally, the door creaked open, and Anabel emerged in a stunning dress.
"Ash, here's a letter for you," she said, her cheeks faintly pink. "But don't read it until after you've left. And…" She hesitated before stepping closer, arms outstretched. "Let me give you a hug."
Caught off guard, Ash stood frozen as Anabel embraced him. Her voice was soft as she said, "Thank you, Ash."
As they parted, Ash gazed into her eyes.
"Anabel," he said, his voice steady, "when I've conquered the Battle Frontier, will you join me on my journey?"
Anabel's eyes widened, her expression a mix of surprise and emotion. She didn't respond immediately, but her smile spoke volumes.
