The aftermath of the ridge battle brought both relief and exhaustion. As Calen's group returned to Kaelira's camp, the wary eyes that had once regarded them with suspicion now softened with respect. The camp gathered around the central fire, waiting for Kaelira's announcement.
Kaelira stood tall, her voice steady and commanding. "Today, Yaloran and the Thalewood Village are united by trust and bloodshed. Together, we will face the empire's tyranny." Her words were met with murmurs of agreement and nods from her people.
The council elders stepped forward to make it official. One elder, a wiry man named Eldan, spoke. "This alliance will make us stronger. The skills of your group complement our own. But who among you leads?"
Ronan gestured to Calen, who stepped forward hesitantly, the weight of responsibility heavy on his shoulders. "I'm no warrior like Ronan or Kaelira," he said, his voice steady but humble. "But I believe in unity, in the strength we can share together. If you'll have me, I'll do everything I can to protect what we're building."
The camp erupted into cheers of approval, cementing the alliance.
As preparations for the journey began, Kaelira introduced a few of her key warriors who would join the effort.
"This is Jorik," she said, pointing to a hulking man sharpening a pair of axes. "He's our frontliner, unmatched in strength. In close combat, no one can stand against him." Jorik nodded, his scarred face betraying a small grin of acknowledgment.
"And this is Lira," Kaelira continued, gesturing to a slender woman with twin daggers strapped to her sides. "She's our infiltrator, quick and deadly. When you need someone to disappear and reappear behind enemy lines, she's the one you call."
Lastly, Kaelira introduced Mallen, a wiry, older man with a bow taller than himself. "Mallen is our sharpshooter. He may not be as young as Kira, but his aim is unerring. Together, the two of you will ensure we strike before our enemies even see us."
Kira exchanged a grin with Mallen. "Looks like I'll have some competition."
Finn clapped Mallen on the back. "Between you and Kira, I almost feel bad for the empire."
With the introductions complete, the camp began to break down their structures and pack supplies. Over fifty people were joining the journey, their eyes filled with hope as they marched under the banner of unity.
Calen felt the weight of responsibility but also the strength of the people around him. For the first time, he believed they might truly stand a chance against the empire.
