Chapter 34 - Chapter 33: A Reunion Reclaimed

Sofia held Lily in her arms, her heart pounding with a mixture of emotions that she could hardly process. The sensation of the little girl in her embrace—familiar, warm, and utterly innocent—was so overwhelming that it felt as if time had rewound. The years that had passed, the distance between them, all seemed to vanish in that one embrace. The hospital's busy entrance, once filled with the sounds of hurried footsteps and ringing phones, now felt distant, irrelevant. There was only the soft rustling of the wind and the steady beat of Sofia's heart.

Lily pulled back slightly, her eyes wide with a mix of joy and curiosity. "Ate Mom," she repeated, this time more softly, as though the words themselves held the weight of a thousand memories. Her small hands rested against Sofia's chest, searching for some kind of confirmation, some acknowledgment that the connection between them was as real as it felt.

Sofia swallowed hard, her throat tight with emotion. She had wanted to remain detached, to keep her professional boundaries in place, but the floodgates had opened, and it was impossible to close them now. "Lily…" she whispered, her voice thick with the mixture of love and regret. She hadn't known how to feel when she first learned of Lily's return, but seeing her now, in front of her, it was as if everything—every choice, every sacrifice—had led to this moment.

Lily smiled up at her, her face lighting up like a sunrise. "I missed you, Ate Mom. I missed you so much!" she said, her words full of innocent honesty. Sofia's heart ached at the simple truth of it. How could she have stayed away for so long? How had she allowed herself to be so distant, when Lily had never stopped needing her?

"I missed you too," Sofia managed, her voice shaky. She looked down at the child, taking in every detail—the way Lily's eyes sparkled with excitement, the small, unassuming way she clung to Sofia as though nothing could pull them apart. Sofia felt a lump form in her throat. She had been a part of this child's life once, a presence in her every day, and to be pulled back into that world, to be reminded of what they had shared, was both beautiful and painful.

Lily's eyes searched Sofia's face, as though she were looking for something more. "Why didn't you visit me? I thought you would, when I came back."

Sofia's breath hitched, and for a moment, she couldn't find the words. How could she explain the years of silence, the reasons behind her absence? How could she tell Lily about the wall she had built around herself, a wall she thought was necessary, but now realized had only caused pain?

Ryan's voice interrupted her thoughts, soft but firm, drawing her attention away from Lily for a moment. "Lily, let's give Ate Mom some space," he said, walking towards them with a calm smile. His presence was steady, a reminder of the responsibilities and complexities that had brought them to this point. "She's had a long day, and we should let her rest."

Lily looked up at her father, a momentary pout on her lips, but then she nodded obediently. Sofia could see the hesitation in her eyes, the reluctance to let go. But Ryan's reassuring smile and the way he gently placed his hand on Lily's shoulder made it clear that the decision was for the best.

"I'll see you soon, okay?" Sofia said, crouching down to meet Lily's gaze. She wasn't sure when or how they would continue their conversation, but she was determined to make it happen.

Lily's face softened, a small nod following her father's encouraging words. "Okay, Ate Mom," she whispered, giving Sofia one last hug before pulling away, her eyes not leaving Sofia's for a second.

Sofia stood, watching as Lily walked back toward Ryan, her small figure a reminder of the time that had passed, and yet, of the bond that remained unbroken. Ryan looked at her, his expression unreadable, but there was a glint of understanding in his eyes. He knew what this moment meant for both of them, the weight of the years they had lost, and the fragile thread of connection they were now trying to rebuild.

Sofia stood still for a moment longer, her heart racing. This was just the beginning, she knew. There was so much more to navigate, so many emotions to untangle. But the one thing that was clear was that the past was not as easily erased as she had once hoped. It was still there, lingering between them, shaping the way they would move forward. And yet, in the quiet space between them, Sofia could also sense the potential for healing.

She turned away, taking a deep breath, her mind racing with the unspoken questions that filled her heart. There was so much she needed to say, so much she needed to explain. But for now, all she could do was hold onto this moment, this unexpected reunion, and hope that in time, the answers would come.
