Chapter 15 - First Friend II

The concept of a friend was foreign to Ariadna. She had never truly had one; she could not recall a time when friendship had graced her life. She remembered love, felt the heat of lust, and cherished her family. She understood reverence and the act of following, but the bond of friendship had always eluded her. Had she simply forgotten?

Curiosity sparked within her, and she asked, "Why do you want to be friends with me?"

Flora replied with a sincerity that warmed her heart. "Because I believe we have more in common than you might think."

Ariadna took the invitation and ran with it. "Which member of the holy family of the God of Innovation and Craft is your friend?"

Flora's smile widened, clearly delighted by the question. "Oh, they are all wonderful and extravagant in their own ways. However, I am closest to the youngest, Visla."

Ariadna nodded, absorbing the information, but Flora continued, a note of caution creeping into her voice. "Though, she might be a bit reserved when it comes to making new acquaintances, much like Castor."

So, she also dislikes me—Ariadna thought ruefully. Nonetheless, she smiled at Flora, feeling a growing bond as they strolled through the garden. The girl had provided her with so much insight; this ball was proving to be far more significant than she had ever anticipated.

Flora suddenly stopped in front of a small tree. "This is a jasmine tree, quite unusual for this region. Yet, it seems to thrive beautifully, even in its youth." She turned to Ariadna, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "I would love to stay in touch through written correspondence. Perhaps you could visit me sometime for botanical lessons." She winked playfully.

As Flora began to withdraw, she added, "I shouldn't take up any more of your time. I suspect some of the holy families may be retiring for the night soon."

Ariadna was taken aback by the subtle wisdom of the girl, a pleasant warmth spreading through her chest—an unexpected feeling of gratitude and connection. "Thank you, Lady Flora, for your time. I would cherish the chance to continue our conversation. However, I must take my leave now. Have a wonderful evening."

Flora smiled gently, her gaze drifting back to the jasmine tree as Ariadna headed back toward the hall, eager not to miss the last vital person she hoped to meet. She knew she was expected.
