TYRA
Bang!
A bullet shot through the door.
"Ow!" I exclaimed as I landed on the balcony, thankful there was a huge rug to break my fall. "IT WASN'T BULLETPROOF?!"
"Come on!" Tiana had landed on her feet and was already at the balcony door.
This balcony led to a library on the third floor of the nine-story building. Tiana kicked the doors open, breaking the already weak pin lock, which frightened me for some reason.
"Oh no!" I said as I rushed over to Tiana. The towel had been lost during the jump and her arm was bleeding violently.
"Tiana, we need to do something about your arm, or you'll bleed out and…" I couldn't bring myself to say it. I loved Tiana and she had just risked her life to save me. I felt a tear roll down my cheek.
"Tyra, take this" Tiana took out a small box from her pocket. Its corners were soaked in her blood.
"Tiana, what is this?" I asked her as I took it in my hands.
"If… if I don't make it, you can open it." Had she already given up on any chance of survival?
"Come on let's go. You're going to make it. You have to make it." I took her good arm and ran through the library.
"What's the plan?" I asked when we reached the staircase outside the library.
"When I called the police, I had also called some friends. Janet and Jane. They're driving here as we speak. All we need to do is make it to the pharmacy across the street where they will be waiting for us. I have a lot of money on me so we will stay in a hotel until we can figure out what to do next. Got it?"
"Got it!"
We ran down the building to the ground floor as I tried to recall where I had heard the names Janet and Jane before. It was at the tip of my tongue.
"It's locked!" Tiana screamed
"What do you mean locked? That's the only way out of here!" I replied and angrily pulled on the handle of the back door.
"Maybe we can find the k- Tyra stop pulling it! it'll break!" Tiana pulled my waist trying to release my grip on the door handle.
"Let go of me! We need to open it. I can't stay here another minute, or they'll get me and send me to the butcher. I'm too pretty to die and I-" the door handle gave away and fell to the ground. I looked from the handle on the floor to a livid Tiana who looked like she wanted to kill me.
"That was our key out of here, you idiot!" Tiana screamed and charged at me.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I didn't know it would break." I apologized.
"Well, it did, and n-…"
A bullet wheezed past us and through the door leaving a smoking hole. A policeman held his gun aimed at Tiana. I screamed and Tiana put her hand over my mouth to shut me up as a grin appeared on her face. I didn't know what she was thinking but I didn't like the look in her eyes. I violently shook my head trying to free myself from her gasp, but she was too strong.
She reached underneath her shirt and brought an object that I couldn't recognize until it was pressed against my neck. A knife. Why would Tiana just turn on me like that? I wanted to struggle but she pressed the knife deeper into my neck and I could almost feel my skin separating. A tear rolled down my cheek as I thought it was over for me. Tiana would save her butt and kill me which was honestly very expected from the murderer of my biological parents. Why did I even trust her in the first place?
"Tiana! Let go of her!" The policeman shouted to Tiana from the top of the stairs and began to slowly walk down.
"Stop" Tiana screamed back at them "One more step and I'll kill her, and you know that I'll do it, so I advise you to stay right where you are."
The policeman stopped and thought about it. "Tiana calm down. We can talk about this! If you let her go, I won't put you in prison. You'll simply be taken to a rehabilitation and correction facility. You'll be properly cared for, and no one needs to get hurt."
"Liar!"
The policeman seemed to have enough of her games and pulled the trigger, aiming the barrel at Tiana's head. In a split second before the bullet could reach us, Tiana fell to the floor with me still in her arms and the bullet flew straight through the door lock breaking it open. The door lazily swung open and fresh air rushed inside.
After a moment of shock, the policeman realized what he had just done and ran down the steps when a sharp object flew through the air and landed in his chest immediately soaking his light blue shirt with a crimson red. The man's dying eyes darted behind me, and I looked back to see the knife was not thrown by Tiana.
"Janet!" Tiana screamed and ran to hug her. "What are you doing here?"
"You were taking so long, and I got worried, so I came to come and look for you. I'm lucky I found you on time. Oh! I'm Janet. You must be Tyra. It's lovely to meet you and we'll get to pleasantries soon enough but now we have to leave. We don't have much time, and Jane is still waiting for us." She reached out and waited for me to grab her hand and stand up.
Yes! I was still on the floor. A human being just died in front of me! I was in shock! I stared at Tiana, then Janet, and then back at the dead body whose blood had dripped down the stairs finally reaching my fingertips, and then I threw up.
