Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The First Encounter

---

Franco's massive form trudged steadily along the dirt road that led out of the village. The sun hung low in the sky, casting an orange hue across the fields and the distant mountains. His steps were slow and deliberate, making sure not to stir up dust or cause unnecessary noise. Even though the villagers had expressed their trust in him, Franco didn't want to leave on a note of sudden departure.

He had spent the better part of the morning saying his goodbyes, receiving parting words from the village leader and a few others, who had offered him supplies for his journey. The pouch of berries was useful, but Franco knew it wasn't nearly enough to survive the dangers that lay ahead. He would need to find a more reliable source of income, or perhaps a way to make use of his own abilities.

As the village faded behind him, Franco's thoughts turned inward. The world of One Piece was vast, and although he had an overwhelming power at his disposal with the Goro Goro no Mi (Rumble-Rumble Fruit), the truth was that power alone would not be enough. He had to grow—not just in strength, but in wisdom, strategy, and experience. Even now, he could feel the faint stirring of Haki inside him. But how to unlock it? That was still a mystery.

The path ahead was quiet, the only sounds being the rustling of leaves and the distant chirp of birds. For the time being, the world felt peaceful, but Franco knew that peace was fleeting. Pirates roamed these seas, and he had already been warned by the village leader of their unpredictable nature.

Franco's thoughts were interrupted by a sudden shout in the distance.

"Hey, you there! Stop right there!"

The voice was rough, laced with the arrogance of someone who felt in control. Franco's sharp senses immediately detected the presence of several individuals, concealed just beyond the bend in the road. He didn't need to guess; they were pirates, likely seeking to rob or cause trouble for anyone unfortunate enough to cross their path.

Franco didn't break his stride. He kept walking, his large boots crushing the earth beneath him with each step. His figure loomed large in the distance, and it was only a matter of time before the pirates showed themselves. As he walked, Franco felt the subtle tension in the air, a sign that the pirates were preparing to make their move.

The first pirate appeared from the trees, stepping onto the path ahead of him. He was a tall, scruffy man with an eyepatch over his left eye, wearing a torn red vest and loose trousers. His hand rested casually on the hilt of a sword. The man didn't look particularly dangerous, but his swagger spoke of someone who had been in more than a few fights.

"Well, well, look what we have here. A giant, huh?" The pirate grinned, showing a row of crooked teeth. "This is our turf, friend. You're gonna have to pay the toll if you want to keep walking."

Franco's eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn't stop. The pirate's cocky demeanor was typical of those who roamed the seas. They were bold because they believed they could intimidate others into submission. Franco had dealt with this kind of arrogance before. He wasn't interested in violence unless absolutely necessary.

"I'm not interested in paying any tolls," Franco said, his voice low but carrying a weight of authority that made the pirate pause. His tone wasn't threatening—it was simply firm. "I'm just passing through."

The pirate's grin faltered for a moment as he took in Franco's towering form. But it was only a momentary hesitation before the pirate laughed.

"Oh, I see… You think you can just walk past us, huh? We don't let anyone through without a little tribute." The pirate motioned to his companions, who emerged from behind the trees. There were four more of them, all with similar rough appearances. A couple of them carried swords, while the others were armed with blunt weapons—clubs, and chains.

Franco sighed. He had hoped for a peaceful journey, but it seemed that fate had different plans. He wasn't here to start a fight, but he also wasn't going to let these pirates push him around.

"I'll say it one more time," Franco said, his voice growing louder, more commanding. "I'm not interested in your toll. If you don't let me pass, I'll be forced to make you."

The pirate with the eyepatch sneered. "You've got guts, I'll give you that. But you're a giant, and that just makes you an even bigger target. Take him down, boys!"

Without warning, the pirates lunged forward, weapons drawn. The first pirate, a burly man wielding a large club, swung it with surprising speed at Franco's legs. Franco's reflexes were quicker than expected for someone of his size. He raised one massive hand, easily deflecting the swing with the back of his palm. The impact of the club hitting his arm echoed like thunder, and the pirate was sent stumbling backward.

The other pirates didn't hesitate. They attacked from all sides, but Franco's giant stature and power allowed him to move fluidly, despite his size. He bent low, avoiding another slash from a pirate's sword, and reached down to grab a large boulder from the side of the road. He threw it with surprising precision, knocking one of the pirates off his feet and sending him crashing into the nearby trees.

"Enough!" Franco's voice boomed like the rumble of thunder. The remaining pirates hesitated for a moment, sensing the raw power radiating from Franco. They were no longer laughing or mocking. Fear had replaced their bravado.

The pirate with the eyepatch, realizing that the situation was slipping out of his control, drew his sword and pointed it at Franco. "You think you can just walk away after that?" he shouted. "You'll regret this!"

Franco's expression remained unchanged. "If you leave now, I won't hurt you," he said simply. His tone was calm, but there was a certain finality in his words. He had no intention of slaying these pirates, but he also wasn't going to allow them to threaten him.

The pirate's grip on his sword tightened, but before he could make another move, Franco raised his hand, and the Goro Goro no Mi within him flared. Electricity crackled through the air as he used the power of his Devil Fruit to conjure a bolt of lightning that arced across the sky. The sudden display of power was enough to send a wave of panic through the pirates.

The pirate with the eyepatch, now visibly shaken, lowered his sword. "Alright, alright! We'll leave! We don't want any trouble!"

With that, the pirates scattered, retreating into the trees as quickly as they had appeared. Franco watched them go, his chest rising and falling as the tension slowly dissipated.

He stood there for a moment, feeling the adrenaline fade. The encounter had been brief but intense. He hadn't wanted to kill, but he also wasn't about to allow himself to be intimidated.

This world wasn't going to give him any favors. If he wanted to become the strongest, he would have to face countless challenges like this—small battles that tested his resolve and power. But it was also moments like these that taught him something vital: it wasn't just about defeating enemies. It was about asserting his place in the world and making it clear that he would not back down.

As Franco continued down the road, his thoughts turned inward. The encounter with the pirates had been a small but significant step. It wasn't just the battle itself, but the realization that this world was full of people who would challenge him at every turn. And if he was to truly be the strongest, he needed to be prepared for whatever came next.

This chapter marks a significant moment in Franco's journey. It is his first true confrontation with pirates, and though he didn't want to kill, he demonstrated his strength and resolve. It's a reminder that in the world of One Piece, power is often the key to survival, but control and wisdom are equally important.
