Chapter 1 - Prologue

They say: supernatural beings, such as Vampires, don't have emotions. They are unable to express their feelings or feel anything at all. After all, they do drain the lives of humans because of their thirst for blood. Not because of hunger, as they choose bloodlust. How heartless, don't you think?

However, if this statement is true, why is this vampire shaking from fear and begging for mercy?

"Please! Spare me! I won't do it again! I swear!" it begged as it sat on the floor, eyes wide open and tears streaming down his cheeks from fear. The supernatural being knew his life was in danger, and for the first time, he felt true fear towards a human.

Hearing a disgusting creature like that cry and beg for mercy triggered something within the Vampire Hunter, she was uncertain what it was but the only thing she knew was that it was something new, something unknown, yet it was something that felt vaguely familiar.

"Give me one reason as to why I have to spare you, who knows, I might as well reconsider my decision." She blankly responded. A tone that made the vampire in front of her doubt if she was being completely honest with her words. However, beggars can't be choosers and it was best for him to follow along if he actually wanted to survive.

"I...I have a family." He hesitantly spoke up, his eyes held a hint of vulnerability. Perhaps he was being honest, perhaps he was not. However, the eyes don't lie. If anything, they are the reflection of one's intentions, a promise to one's words.

". . ." At hearing his response, she quieted down. Since when did vampires have the luxury of reproducing? Her navy blue eyes narrowed as she inspected him. She didn't trust his words as much as he didn't trust hers. They were both different species, after all, one of them was a vampire that ate humans while the other was a human, hunting vampires. It was like a little game of cat and mouse. Whoever lost, had to pay the price with their life.

"Tell me, what is human life to you?" The Vampire Hunter coldly declared, aiming the tip of her katana at the Vampire's neck. The vampire's eyes reflected the navy blue color of her katana's glowing flames. Truth be told, he had never encountered a flame like that, a flame so bright, yet so cold at the same time. Wasn't a fire supposed to be hot?

 ". . ."

Silence.

It didn't take a while to replace a "conversation" with silence. No words needed to be said to explain what the vampire had in mind as it was already written all over his face. He just stared at the human in front of him with a somewhat blank expression. Was his behavior earlier just an act?

"Just as I thought." The hunter spoke, her tone laced with an obvious hint of disappointment as she withdrew her sword from the vampire's neck before turning around and starting to walk away. The tip of her katana came in contact with the floor, causing a screeching sound to be released in the dead of the night.

To spare; A not-so-easy decision one could make especially when the person you are sparing is a cold-blooded murderer. You know that by sparing that murderer, the lives of those who fell victim wouldn't be avenged. But, by murdering him, the life of his family will be ruined. It is uncertain whether or not a decision will justify a person's actions, though the outcome remains the same: Out of the two, at least one of them must face the consequences of the other's choice.

A never-ending cycle, and a system built by sacrifices, full of injustice. A world where your choice has no value unless you're from a high position. This is reality.

When the vampire realized his life was being spared, he got up. His limbs shook from all that fear he had felt during his encounter with the Vampire Hunter. After all, when faced with death, even the most powerful beings shiver from terror.

Moreover, what he failed to understand was that no matter the consequence, no sane Hunter would leave their prey alive. He had realized that when death knocks at your doorstep, it won't show you any mercy, regardless of your situation. However, his realization arrived way too late as his head had already detached itself from his body and fell on the concrete, which then was soon followed by his headless body.

 Oh, the irony...

After all the centuries he's existed, he always encountered Vampire Hunters in his wake but they all spared him. He thought today wouldn't be any different, he believed that all hunters were empathetic.

  Oh, what a mistake.

As his body started decomposing and turning into ashes, his eyes caught a glimpse of hers. What he witnessed in her eyes made him shiver from fear yet again. Not a single glimpse of remorse could be found in her deep navy blue eyes, her katana was set ablaze by raging abyssal blue flames, even if the fire didn't create any sort of sound, he could hear the roaring of a fearsome dragon in his ear.

When you live long enough, spared enough, and saved enough, you start to get cockier and more full of yourself which is followed by taking more life-threatening risks, neglecting your life, thinking you'll be saved yet again only to come to a conclusion that your sins might catch up with you, resulting in taking your life.

Most of the Vampire Hunters have empathy and they have a high level of understanding others' emotions regardless of their species. They can make decisions depending on their pity for you and on rare occasions, they might spare you.

However, this Vampire Hunter was not a part of them and he should have known this before he would do something he now regrets.
