Chapter 4 - Chapter 4- Emerald I

Emerald I

---00---

Emerald rushed out the front door, sprinting down the hill as fast as her legs could take her. She had always been a fast runner, 'just was like the wind', her father would often say. Her leather shoes slapped against the ploughed land of the family farm, the ground was fresh and a little uneven, and whilst she normally didn't mind if she had dirt all over her dress, she wanted to look her best. With her delicate hands as a makeshift comb, she fixed the hair her brother messed, and as she came down to the stone fence, she patted down her dress.

What if he did bring flowers?

Brad's words echoed through her mind, bouncing off every edge of her mind. Her heart throbbed within her chest, and suddenly Emerald found herself a little lightheaded. She looked at the pillar of water, with a beautiful dark block of purple near its bottom. It defied the worlds norms, and once more, she thought about her miracle knight. She had only known him for just over a day, but she considered Ser Jaxon hers. He just didn't know it yet, but with time, he would come to understand.

"Hey Emerald! How was your breakfast?" He walked down the dirt path, dressed head-to-toe in steel and a large smile upon his lips. He waved his hands in the air eagerly, and suddenly, Emerald felt a tad bit shy. However, she had enough of her father in her to muster up some courage.

"It was quite fine," bread wasn't her favourite meal, she much preferred a good stew, but she wasn't going to look miserable in front of her miracle knight. Not when he looked so happy to see her, oh my, I might just fall in love with you all over again if you keep smiling at me like that, Ser Jaxon. "May I ask what this pillar of water is?" She smiled, before she realised that her teeth weren't quite her best feature and covered her grin with a single hand.

"Yeah, it's a super-duper speed-runner strat'. I'm going to go to the nether and make some potions. Do you by chance have any rabbit feet?" She didn't know what a 'speed-runner strat', or a 'nether'- but she did know what a potion was… her heart throbbed within her chest once more. She wanted to ask if he could make a potion to heal her father of his cough. Her desire to ask was so great that even with her hand over her mouth, the words threatened to spill out.

"Yes, I can trade some of our wheat for a rabbit's foot, I'm quite familiar with the butcher, after all. Would you being in need of more than one?"

He put a finger to his chin, his brow furrowed as if in deep thought. All of a sudden, she was breathless- Ser Jaxon was just too damn gallant. Her cheeks flushed, and she felt as if she was floating on cloud nine. "Nah, I just need the one. You want to watch me make the portal?" She nodded, and off her went. He pulled out a bucket filled with a bubbling orange liquid and placed it next to the water, and it instantly it steamed into another square block of darkness, with that same hint of purple. It only took a moment, but an up-right rectangle stood tall.

"Now for the finishing touch, Emerald! It doesn't get any more Minecraft-y than this!" Her miracle knight pulled out a flint and a small block of steel, before kneeling as if praying to the seven, before he lightly tapped them together. A spark flew from the steel and landed harmlessly onto the 'portal'. For a moment, she thought that was all, and despite herself, was a little disappointed. However, before she could think another thought, the empty centre of the 'portal' was alit with a see-though purple glow. The purple glow looked almost like a windowpane that the village sept had. It looked-

"-Beautiful…"

"Hmm, yeah. I guess it does look pretty cool." Ser Jaxon scratched his cheek, and Emerald gripped the fabric over her chest, her heart swooning at the sight, finding it immensely sweet. "How long will it take for you to get the rabbits foot?"

"Just a little while. I shan't bee keeping you waiting for too long, Ser Jaxon."

"Great, I'll be inside this portal for a while," he slapped the pillar made of those blocks of darkness, and despite herself, she flinched, half-expecting it to topple over. It was so top-heavy, that she wouldn't have been surprised. The pillar didn't move though, not an inch. "Please don't enter it. Just wait here after you come back. I'll come back with a couple of surprises!" He moved to enter the purple glow, to a place she didn't know anything about. Ser Jaxon had his knightly diamond sword in his grasp, the blade gleaming a soft blue in the morning sunlight. Emerald felt worry, worry for him, and for where he was going. She stepped forward and gripped his wrist gingerly, her thousand birds a flight in her gut.

"Please, take care…" She felt his hand lightly touch her golden locks and mess them up. Where she had felt vexed when her brother had done so only a little while ago, right now, Emerald leaned into his touch. Her cheeks felt hot, and other parts of her felt hot also. He looked down at her, since he was just so tall- even if she had been on the tips of her toes, she would only have reached his shoulders. her only regret was that she didn't own a handkerchief to wrap around his wrist.

Just have to pray that my touch will see him protected from harm.

"No need to worry, I've already slept at your place! I'll be fine!"

He smiled, and she knew then that everything would be alright. Somehow, some way, everything would work out. And off he went, disappearing through the purple glow as if he was just a figment of her mind's eye. She stood there, breathless in awe, waiting to see if her miracle knight would return. He didn't, and with an eased heart, Emerald reached into one of the large chests next to the stone fence and pulled out a handful of wheat. She headed off to the butchers to buy Ser Jaxon his rabbit's foot.
