The kitchen is quiet for a while as the impact of what I said lingers. I don't turn away as Alexander's grandmother observes me with such intensity that my heart races.
At last, she gives a tiny, nearly undetectable nod. She repeats what Alexander said before, "You're either very brave or very foolish, Mia. Maybe both. I guess time will tell."
Alexander's smirk reappears, but as he looks at me, his eyes have softened. "Bravery suits her," he says, almost to himself.
"Just keep in mind, you two, that courage is insufficient on its own. If you want to make it through marriage, you'll need a lot of luck, determination, and wit." She has a light voice with a steely undertone.
Even though the tea is warm in my hands, the seriousness of her words descends upon us, and I go cold. As much as I can see the storm coming, Alexander's grandmother is no fool. But rather than sinking under her inspection, I sit up taller and look her in the eye.
