Alex POV
The Distance
Emily was different.
Since that day in my office. She's professional, efficient.
She was all business, all the time.
She became distant.
No glimmer in her eyes anymore. No playful banter anymore.
I wish they were still there.
I wish she still smiled at me with those gleaming eyes.
But the reason, the cause for her distancing, was well understood by me.
I let her down. I was quite harsh after the rooftop dinner. I made sure that my professional affairs stayed professional.
It's safe to say that I was the one who caused her emotional distress.
And to a certain extent, that was unavoidable.
I looked at her; I looked at her smiles, which once made so much sense, now only come to my mind as artificial.
I want to bridge the gap.
But how?
Risking my business isn't an option. My reputation. My family's legacy.
But Emily's worth considering.
Am I in some sort of rush to try my luck once again?
The feeling of guilt filled my mind. I missed her and really wanted to be in her space again.
"Emily, can we talk?" I ask.
She nods.
But her guard remains.
A guard that is cold and reserved yet not disdainful.
I sensed her vulnerability.
