Chapter 93 - Chapter 93

**Arc 5: Chapter 18 - Infiltration in the Shadows**

The forest grew darker as the group moved closer to the Nexus outpost. The towering trees provided ample cover, their dense canopies blocking out the sliver of moonlight. Every step was deliberate, every sound muffled by years of honed instincts.

Jae-min signaled for the group to halt. Ahead, the faint glow of floodlights illuminated the compound's perimeter. It was smaller than the main Nexus facilities they had encountered before, but the presence of patrolling guards and automated drones made it clear that this outpost wasn't to be taken lightly.

Luna crouched beside him, her sharp eyes scanning the guards' movements. "Four on the perimeter. Two drones circling. Timing is tight."

"We'll handle it," Elise whispered, unsheathing a pair of sleek, black daggers. "Silent and clean, just like you said."

Jae-min nodded. "Make it quick. Once the perimeter is down, we'll move in."

Luna and Elise exchanged a brief glance before disappearing into the shadows. Their movements were almost supernatural, slipping between the trees like ghosts. Jae-min watched as the first guard dropped silently, Luna's precision unmatched. Elise followed suit, her daggers flashing briefly before the second guard crumpled to the ground.

Meanwhile, the drones hovered closer, their mechanical whirring growing louder. Elise signaled to Luna, who drew a compact EMP device from her pouch. With a click, a wave of energy rippled outward, and the drones sputtered, their lights flickering before falling to the ground with a dull thud.

The perimeter was clear.

Jae-min motioned to the others, and the group advanced toward the fence. Min-jun led the way, pointing out a weak spot he had identified from his memories. "Here. The fence isn't reinforced in this section. We can cut through without tripping any alarms."

Hana produced a set of wire cutters, working quickly and efficiently. Within moments, there was a gap wide enough for them to slip through.

Once inside, the group split into two teams. Luna and Elise stayed behind to secure the exit and deal with any reinforcements, while Jae-min, Hana, and Min-jun moved deeper into the compound.

The interior of the outpost was eerily quiet. Dimly lit corridors stretched out in every direction, the sterile smell of metal and machinery filling the air. Min-jun took the lead, his movements cautious but purposeful.

"She should be in the holding cells," he whispered. "Down this hall, to the left."

Jae-min nodded, his hand hovering over the hilt of his sword. Every corner they turned felt like a potential ambush, every shadow a possible threat.

As they approached the holding cells, the faint sound of voices reached their ears. Jae-min held up a hand, signaling the group to stop.

Two guards were stationed outside the door, their conversation casual and unworried.

"Did you hear? They're moving the prisoners tomorrow," one of them said, leaning against the wall. "Guess the higher-ups think this place is too vulnerable."

"Good riddance," the other guard replied. "This assignment's been a drag. Can't wait to get back to the city."

Jae-min exchanged a look with Hana, who nodded. With practiced precision, the two of them moved forward. Hana struck first, a quick jab to the neck silencing one guard instantly. Jae-min followed up, his blade slicing through the second guard before he could react.

The keys jingled in the first guard's hand, and Min-jun grabbed them, his hands trembling slightly. He unlocked the door, pushing it open to reveal a row of cramped cells.

"Min-jun?"

The voice was weak but unmistakable. A young woman sat in one of the cells, her clothes tattered and her face pale. Her eyes widened as she saw her brother.

"Soo-ah!" Min-jun rushed to her, unlocking the cell and pulling her into a tight embrace. "I'm so sorry. I'll never let this happen again."

She clung to him, tears streaming down her face. "I thought I'd never see you again."

Jae-min stepped forward, his voice calm but urgent. "We need to move. Now."

Soo-ah nodded, leaning on Min-jun as they exited the cell.

The group retraced their steps, but as they neared the exit, an alarm blared through the compound. Red lights flashed, and the sound of boots echoed down the halls.

"They've found the bodies," Hana muttered, drawing her weapon.

Jae-min tightened his grip on his sword. "No time to panic. Stick to the plan. We fight our way out if we have to."

As they reached the perimeter, Luna and Elise rejoined them, their weapons already drawn.

"Reinforcements are coming from the north," Luna reported, her voice steady. "We've got about two minutes before they're on us."

Jae-min scanned the area, his mind racing. "We'll split up. Luna, Elise, cover our retreat. Min-jun, take Soo-ah and head for the extraction point. Hana and I will hold the line."

"No way," Min-jun protested. "We're not leaving you behind!"

"You won't be," Jae-min said firmly. "We'll be right behind you. Go!"

Reluctantly, Min-jun obeyed, leading Soo-ah toward the forest.

The remaining group turned to face the oncoming guards. The odds were against them, but they stood their ground, ready to fight.

"Let's show Nexus what happens when they mess with us," Jae-min said, a fierce determination in his eyes.

The first wave of guards appeared, their weapons raised.

And the battle began.
