Chapter 76 - Chapter 76

### **Arc 5: The Veil of Betrayal**

**Chapter 1: Arrival in Aurin**

The city of Aurin was nothing like Jae-min had ever seen before. Massive stone towers glittered with golden inlays, reflecting the light of the setting sun. The streets were bustling with merchants shouting about exotic wares, their colorful stalls lined with silks, spices, and artifacts. The air was heavy with the scent of roasted meats and freshly baked bread, but beneath the vibrant facade, Jae-min could sense something darker.

"Stay close," Jae-min said, adjusting his coat. Beside him, Yuna clutched a map, her eyes darting from one landmark to another.

"This place is massive," Yuna murmured, awe tinged with unease. "It doesn't feel like we belong here."

"That's because we don't," Riho said flatly. She had been unusually quiet during their journey to Aurin, and her face betrayed none of the excitement that the others felt.

"Come on, lighten up," Leon quipped, slapping Riho on the back. "We've handled worse places."

"But not like this," Yerin said, her voice soft but firm. "This city feels… oppressive."

Jae-min nodded. Aurin was a hub of power and wealth, but he had learned long ago that such places thrived on the exploitation of the weak.

They made their way toward the Merchant Guild's grand hall, an opulent building that dominated the city's skyline. The guild was known for its iron grip over Aurin's economy, controlling trade routes and monopolizing resources. Lucian Varin, the guildmaster, had sent them an invitation promising information about Eclipse, but Jae-min was wary. He had learned to be cautious when powerful men offered help.

---

Inside the guildhall, the opulence was even more overwhelming. Crystal chandeliers cast shimmering light across marble floors, and gilded columns stretched to a ceiling painted with scenes of conquest and prosperity. Guild members in fine suits and dresses whispered among themselves, their eyes occasionally darting toward Jae-min and his group.

"Ah, you must be Jae-min."

A smooth, commanding voice echoed through the hall, and Jae-min turned to see Lucian Varin descending a grand staircase. The guildmaster was a tall, silver-haired man dressed in a tailored suit. His sharp features were framed by a smile that didn't reach his calculating gray eyes.

"Welcome to Aurin," Lucian said, extending a hand.

Jae-min hesitated before shaking it. "Thank you for inviting us. I understand you have information about Eclipse?"

Lucian's smile widened. "Straight to business. I like that. But such discussions require a more… private setting. Shall we?"

---

In a lavishly decorated meeting room, Lucian poured himself a glass of wine before gesturing for Jae-min and his companions to sit.

"Eclipse," Lucian began, swirling the wine in his glass, "is like a shadow—always present, yet elusive. But shadows, you see, are cast by something tangible."

"What do you know?" Jae-min asked, his tone firm.

Lucian chuckled. "Impatient, aren't we? I do have information, but acquiring it wasn't easy. I'll share it with you… for a price."

"Here it comes," Riho muttered under her breath.

Lucian leaned forward, his smile sharp. "There's a rogue faction causing chaos in Aurin. They're disrupting trade, attacking my caravans, and endangering the city's stability. Eliminate them for me, and I'll give you everything I know about Eclipse."

Jae-min frowned. "You want us to play mercenaries?"

"Think of it as a mutually beneficial arrangement," Lucian said smoothly. "You get what you want, and I get to restore order. Surely that's a fair trade?"

---

Outside the guildhall, the group gathered in a quieter corner of the bustling city.

"This feels wrong," Yerin said, her brow furrowed. "We don't know anything about this rogue faction. What if they're not the villains Lucian claims they are?"

"She's right," Riho said, crossing her arms. "Lucian isn't exactly trustworthy."

"But if he has information on Eclipse, we can't ignore this," Yuna argued. "What choice do we have?"

Jae-min remained silent, his mind racing. Lucian's offer felt like a trap, but they couldn't afford to walk away.

"We'll investigate first," he said finally. "We'll find out who this faction really is before making a move. If Lucian's lying, we'll deal with him."

The group nodded, though unease lingered in the air. As they set out to gather information, Jae-min couldn't shake the feeling that they were stepping into a game where the rules were rigged against them.

And in Aurin, trust was a luxury they couldn't afford.
