Chapter 20 - Body Changes: Paul's Feelings

In the ruined world of the apocalypse, the abandoned factory is like a fragile but tenacious fortress, carrying the hopes and fears of the survivors. Ryan and Clare still lead the crowd in this world full of despair and challenges to move forward, and at this time, the brave and resolute survivor Paul, began to experience a mysterious and disturbing body changes.

Paul performed well in the previous battles, fighting side by side with Ryan, Jamie and others against the attacks of mutated creatures. However, after the battle, he always felt that something was wrong with his body, as if there was a mysterious force surging within him. Gradually, his body became hot, his forehead sweated, and his heart beat abnormally fast, which filled his heart with fear and confusion.

Clare, who was busy at the medical point, noticed Paul's abnormality, she touched Paul's forehead, felt the abnormal heat, realized the seriousness of the problem, and decided to give him a thorough examination.

Clare led Paul to a separate area of the medical point where rudimentary but vital medical equipment was laid out. Dim oil lamps emitted a faint glow that illuminated the small space. A dilapidated wooden bed made of rough boards pieced together and covered with worn but clean mats, next to it was a simple vital signs monitor, which, despite its shabby appearance, could display important parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature.

Nervousness welled up in Paul as he looked at the unfamiliar equipment. He wasn't sure what these would do to him or what was wrong with his body. He recalled the details of the battle and worried that it was the unpredictable effects of the mutant creature's attack, fearing that he had turned into a monster or lost control of himself and hurt others.

Clare picks up the stethoscope, a traditional stethoscope consisting of earplugs, a Y-tube, and a chest piece, which comes in both bell and membrane shapes. She switched between using it on different parts of Paul's chest, listening intently to the heartbeat. The rapid, disorganized rhythm made her heart tighten, each heartbeat as strong as a drum, as if it were about to burst through her chest. Clare's face grew even more stony, knowing full well that this heart rate was far beyond the normal range.

Paul felt the cold stethoscope move across his chest, his mind filled with unease. He could hear his own strong heartbeat, fearing the unknown changes in his body.

Next, Clare pulled out the pressure gauge, a rudimentary but functional device cobbled together from scrap parts. It used the Koch sound method to measure blood pressure by inflating and deflating the cuff, in conjunction with a stethoscope to determine systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Clare skillfully wrapped the cuff around Paul's arm and began to pump. As the cuff tightened, Paul felt a hint of pressure. Clare stared nervously at the dashboard as the needle jumped rapidly and finally stopped at the alarming value. Clare sucked in a breath of cold air, this blood pressure was ridiculously high.

Paul looked at the number on the pressure gauge as panic increased. He didn't understand what the number meant, only that it was serious. He suspected that he was terminally ill or infected with a horrible virus by a mutated creature.

Then came the temperature measurement. Clare picked up the ancient mercury thermometer, which utilized the principle of thermal expansion and contraction of mercury to measure body temperature. She gently placed the thermometer under Paul's armpit and after a few minutes took it out to check it, and the numbers on it made her eyes widen. Paul's temperature was dangerously high at 40 degrees Celsius.

Paul felt the coolness of the thermometer in his armpit and was anxious. He didn't know why his temperature was so high and was worried about the effects of the heat on his body, fearing that he might die or turn into an uncontrollable monster.

Clare examined Paul's eyes, ears, mouth, and other parts of his body more closely. She lifted the oil lamp and moved closer to Paul's eyes, noticing that they were bloodshot and his eyes were confused and disturbed. Paul's ears had become abnormally sensitive and could hear subtle sounds that bothered him greatly. His mouth was dry and his lips were chapped.

"There is something really wrong with your body, but I'm not sure why yet." Clare said, "Have you been exposed to anything strange or had any special experiences lately?"

Paul tried to remember but couldn't think of anything special, he just fought, patrolled and did what he could as usual.

At this point Paul was filled with fear and anxiety. He didn't know the reason for the physical changes and worried about his future.

At this point, Ryan came to the medical point. He heard about Paul's condition and his heart was filled with worry. He understood that in the apocalyptic world, any abnormality could bring great danger.

"Paul, you must hold on. We will find out what the problem is." Ryan said.

Paul nodded, his eyes determined, he knew he couldn't fall, there were still a lot of people he needed to protect.

Clare decided to examine Paul more thoroughly. She took a sample of Paul's blood to prepare for the lab tests, while having Eric and Lucas collect information on the mutated creatures and look for clues.

While waiting for the lab results, Paul's physical condition worsened. He had a splitting headache, weakness in his limbs, and even hallucinations, as if he was in a strange world.

Ryan and Clare stayed by Paul's side, comforting him and giving him strength.

Finally, the lab results came back. Clare looked at the lab results and her face was grave.

"Paul's blood contains a strange substance that I've never seen before." Clare said, "It could be the cause of the changes in his body."

Ryan frowned, "And where did this substance come from?"

Clare shook his head, "I'm not sure, but suspect it has something to do with the mutated creatures. Perhaps Paul was bitten or came into contact with mutant creature bodily fluids during the battle and contracted the substance."

Fear filled Paul's mind, not knowing what the substance would do to him or if he would ever return to normal.

Ryan and Clare decide to treat Paul in isolation, building a temporary isolation ward in the corner of the factory.

In the isolation ward, Paul's health continued to deteriorate, his headaches worsened, his limbs became numb, and he felt that his life was passing, and his heart was filled with despair.

However, just as he was falling into despair, his body suddenly burst out with strong Wayne's energy, instantly energized, and his headache and numbness disappeared. He did not know where this power came from, but could feel its power and mystery.

Paul sat up from the hospital bed and felt the changes in his body. He realized his vision was sharper, his hearing was more acute, and he could feel small changes in the air around him.

"What's going on?" Paul asked in surprise.

Ryan and Clare heard the commotion and rushed over, and were also very surprised to see the changes in Paul.

"Paul, how are you feeling?" Clare asked.

Paul said excitedly, "I feel full of power, like I've become Superman."

Ryan frowned, not knowing if the change was good or bad, and decided to observe and study further to determine the cause and effect.

Paul's change caught the attention of the other survivors, who were both intrigued and envious of Paul's abilities, but also felt a twinge of fear. Realizing that this may not be an isolated case, Ryan and Clare decide to do a thorough examination of all the survivors.

During the examination, they discover that some people also have physical changes of varying degrees; some have increased strength, some have become faster, and some have special sensory abilities.

These changes leave the survivors in a state of confusion and unease, not knowing if they are good or bad, or if they can be controlled. Ryan and Clare decide to hold a meeting to discuss the causes and effects of the physical changes.

At the meeting, Ryan says seriously, "We are in a post-apocalyptic world, full of dangers and challenges. These physical changes may be a way of adapting to the world, but they may also pose unknown risks. We must remain vigilant in exploring the causes and effects to better meet the challenges ahead."

Clare also said, "We must not let these changes become a burden, but should learn to utilize them to create opportunities for survival and development. Research groups can be formed to find out ways to control them."

The other survivors agreed, knowing that the only way to survive the apocalypse was to unite and work together.

Thus, a research team was formed, consisting of Ryan, Clare, Paul, and others. They delved into the physical changes and tried to find out ways to control them. The process encountered many difficulties and challenges, but never gave up.

As the research went deeper, they realized that the body changes seemed to be related to the energy of the mutated creatures. In order to test the hypothesis, they conducted experiments and exposed volunteers to mutant creature energy, and the results confirmed the hypothesis.

This discovery made them both excited and worried, excited that they had found the cause, and worried that they didn't know how to control the risks posed by this energy.

In the following days, the research team continued to work hard, conducting a series of experiments and studies, constantly exploring and trying. Finally, after countless attempts, they found a way to control the energy of the mutated creatures, through special training and meditation, allowing the body to adapt to the energy, thus controlling the physical changes.

This discovery gave hope to the survivors, who actively engaged in training and meditation to master the method of controlling body changes, and also discovered the potential of their bodies, with increasingly stronger abilities.

However, their path is still full of difficulties and challenges. The threat of mutated creatures is still present, and resources are becoming increasingly scarce. They must continue to explore and innovate in order to find better ways to fight the mutant creatures and rebuild the world.

In the days to come, Ryan, Clare, Paul and the other survivors will continue to fight hard for the dawn of the end and the rebirth of multiple civilizations. They believe that as long as they are united, they will be able to overcome the difficulties and create a better future.
