Chapter 1 - Virus Outbreak: The Collapse of the World

In the center of the bustling city, the sunlight should have sprinkled on the forest of skyscrapers as usual, reflecting a brilliant light, the streets were filled with traffic, pedestrians were in a hurry, each going to the battlefield of life. However, this seemingly normal day became the beginning of the end of the world.

Ryan Wesley, a young and talented engineer, was in his office on the top floor of one of the tallest buildings in the city, pondering over the complicated design drawings on his computer. He had an upright figure, his eyes were focused and deep, and a few strands of hair on his forehead were slightly tousled with a hint of unruly. His fingers are rapidly tapping on the keyboard, and he is deaf to the occasional chitchat of his colleagues around him. He loved his job, and every design and every piece of data was like a child to him, meticulously sculpted, not allowing the slightest error.

Meanwhile, in the hospital on the other side of the city, Clare was busy traveling between wards. She is a nurse, her gentle and kind face always carries a warm smile, as if it can dispel the haze in the patient's heart. Her eyes are clear and bright, like a spring of fresh water, bringing comfort to people in pain. She gently changed the drip for an old man, gently asked the old man how he felt, every action was full of care.

Suddenly, a cacophony of voices came from the hospital's radio, followed by an emergency notice, "Attention all hospitals, an unknown virus is spreading rapidly, all healthcare workers take precautions and activate the emergency plan immediately!" Clare's heart tightened as an ominous premonition surged through her mind. She quickly put down the work in her hands and rushed towards the nurses' station to get the protective equipment. The colleagues around her were also filled with panic, running between the various wards with panicked footsteps.

In Ryan's office building, no one noticed anything strange at first. Until there was a commotion in the street below, with people screaming and car horns honking. Ryan and his coworkers went to the window and looked down, only to see a few people on the street like crazy, running wildly, shouting, their eyes empty and crazy, body movements twisted and strange. One of them lunged at a passerby, opened his mouth and bit down hard, blood splashed out instantly. The surrounding people were so scared that they scattered in all directions, and the originally well-organized street was instantly thrown into chaos.

"What's going on here?" Ryan's colleagues murmured in horror. Ryan's brows furrowed as he realized that the severity of the matter was far beyond imagination. Before they could react, there were also screams coming from the office building. It turned out that there were already infected people rushing into the building. Ryan saw a familiar colleague being grabbed by an infected person, the infected person's strength was so great that the colleague struggled desperately but could not break free and was soon bitten. Ryan's heart beat steeply faster and he knew he had to get out of here now.

He rushed towards the door of the office, only to find the corridor in chaos. People were running frantically, some falling to the ground and being trampled by the crowd, others letting out desperate cries as they were chased by the infected. Ryan tried to keep himself calm as he ran towards the emergency escape routes with his familiarity with the building's structure. Along the way, he saw a number of gruesome scenes, with blood splattered on the walls and various items and bodies scattered on the floor.

At the hospital, Clare had put on protective gear, but she knew it might not be enough. The hospital was full of patients and healthcare workers, and the consequences of an outbreak of the virus would be unimaginable. Along with other healthcare workers, she worked to move the patients in the wards to relative safety and set up quarantine areas. However, the virus spread too quickly and more and more people were infected. Patients and healthcare workers collapsed in droves, turning the entire hospital into an inferno on earth.

Clare was helping to transfer a seriously injured patient when she suddenly heard a roar from behind her. She turned around and saw that a tall infected was charging towards them. This infected was originally a hospital security guard, but now he had turned into a hideous monster. His muscles were churning, and a bloodthirsty light flashed in his eyes. Clare and the doctor beside him tried to stop him, but his strength was too great. In the confusion, the doctor was thrown away from him and hit the wall hard and fainted. Clare gritted her teeth and grabbed the medical cart beside her and pushed it towards the infected, trying to buy some time.

Ryan trudged down the escape tunnel, which was dimly lit, with occasional shouts from the others and growls from the infected. His breathing was rapid and his heart was beating like a drum, but his mind was still clear. He knew that every step now was a matter of life and death. Suddenly, a group of infected appeared in front of him, swarming in his direction. Ryan hurriedly turned around, looking for another way out. He found an entrance to a maintenance passage, and without the slightest hesitation, he drilled in.

He led the group through the basement in search of an exit, avoiding a few wandering infected along the way. The basement was intricate, like a giant maze. They circled around inside for a long time before they finally found a staircase that led to the ground. Ryan motioned for the others to follow him and slowly made their way towards the surface. When they reached the ground level, the sight in front of them made them completely despair.

The city was in complete chaos, fires were burning everywhere and smoke was billowing. The streets were littered with abandoned vehicles and corpses, and the infected were roaming all over the city. Ryan saw a supermarket not far away, and he thought there might be some food and supplies there. So, he led the group towards the supermarket.

In the supermarket, they encountered more infected. Ryan grabbed the items on the shelves as weapons and fought the infected. His movements were agile and powerful, repelling the approaching infected one by one. The others also helped, some spraying the infected with fire extinguishers and some smashing them with heavy objects. After a fierce battle, they finally cleared the supermarket of infected.

Ryan told everyone to quickly gather food, water and other useful supplies. He knew that in this post-apocalyptic world, these things were their hope for survival. Just as they were busy gathering supplies, the glass door of the supermarket was suddenly broken by a group of infected, and more infected poured in. Ryan shouted, "Run!" The crowd grabbed the supplies and ran towards the back door of the supermarket.

They escaped to an alley behind the supermarket, temporarily escaping from the infected. Ryan looked at the exhausted and terrified crowd, and he knew that they couldn't stay here for too long. He decided to lead the group to a safer shelter, a place where they could survive in this apocalyptic world.

Clare and her companions' defenses at the hospital were finally breached, and the infected came in like a tidal wave. Clare wielded the instruments in her hands and fought the infected in a final battle. Her eyes were firm and brave, and despite the fear in her heart, she would never give up. In the heat of the battle, her protective gear was torn open and her arm was scratched by the infected. She felt a sharp pain, but she continued to fight through clenched teeth.

Just when Clare thought she was going to die, a gunshot rang out. It turned out to be an army rescue squad arriving at the hospital. They used their powerful firepower to repel the infected and free Clare and the other survivors. Clare looked at the soldiers with gratitude in her eyes. But she knew that this was only a temporary relief, the whole world was being consumed by the virus and they had to keep looking for a way to survive.

Ryan led the group as they trudged through the ruins of the city, constantly dodging infected people and various dangers. Along the way, they see many once-familiar places turned into ruins, where once homes, schools, and shopping malls no longer exist. Every scene is like a knife, stabbing their hearts.

At an intersection, they met a group of survivors who were looting. These men were armed and had fierce eyes, and when they saw Ryan and the others with supplies, they tried to rob them. Ryan stood up to them and confronted them. He tells them that everyone should unite to fight the virus together instead of killing each other. But the men didn't listen, and they charged towards Ryan and the others, brandishing their weapons.

Ryan fought them off, using his wits and the combat skills he had honed during his escape to maneuver around the looters. His companions also joined the fight, and despite their small numbers, they exploded with incredible strength in order to survive. After a hard fight, they repelled the looters, but several were wounded.

Clare followed the army's rescue squad out of the hospital, and they headed towards the outskirts of the city, hoping to find a relatively safe place to set up a temporary base. Along the way, they saw countless infected and affected people. Clare's heart was filled with sadness, she never imagined the world would turn out like this. She utilized her medical skills in the rescue squad to help injured soldiers and survivors.

During a break, the rescue squad was attacked by a group of mutated infected. These mutated infected are stronger and more agile than normal infected and have some special abilities. They came from all directions and surrounded the rescue squad. The soldiers resisted with all their might, but many of them were still injured. Clare was also in danger during the battle, a mutated infected lunged towards her and she couldn't dodge in time. Just in the nick of time, a soldier rushed over and blocked the mutant infected's attack with his body, but was seriously injured himself.

After repelling the looters, Ryan and the others continued their search for shelter. They came to an abandoned factory area, which seemed to be more secluded, with relatively few infected around. Ryan decided to take a break here first to check everyone's injuries and supplies. He told everyone to find a relatively safe place to hide, while he himself went to check around the factory area for any other dangers.

During his inspection, Ryan found a locked warehouse that he thought might contain something useful. He used a tool to pry open the lock and opened the warehouse door, and was overjoyed at the sight inside. The warehouse was filled with all kinds of tools, materials and some unopened food. These supplies were undoubtedly a blessing in disguise for them.

Ryan told everyone the good news and they were all excited. They moved the supplies into a relatively safe plant and began treating their wounds, resting and organizing the supplies. Ryan looked at the tired but hopeful faces and knew that they had a long road to survival ahead of them, but at least now, they had a moment of respite.

Clare did her best to save the injured soldiers after the rescue team repelled the mutated infected. She had very little medical supplies left, but she still tried to do everything she could to ease the pain of the injured. During the rescue process, she discovered that the bite wounds of these mutated infected seemed to have some kind of special virus that would accelerate the mutation of the human body. She told this discovery to the captain of the rescue team, who realized the seriousness of the problem and decided to speed up the advance to find a place where this virus could be studied and fought as soon as possible.

As time passed, Ryan and the others gradually stabilized themselves in the abandoned factory area. They used the materials in the factory to reinforce the plant's defenses and set up some simple alarm devices. Ryan also utilized his engineering knowledge to make some simple weapons and tools. They began to plan their next move, whether to continue looking for a safer place or to hold out here for a long time.

What they didn't realize, however, was that a greater danger was closing in on them. In other parts of the city, some dark forces are rising. These people had lost their humanity in the apocalypse, and they took pleasure in plundering and killing, forming a vicious gang. They learn that there are supplies in the abandoned factory area where Ryan and the others are, and they start heading towards it, ready to take Ryan and the others' supplies for themselves. And in the direction that the rescue team that Clare is in advances, there are also heavy dangers, not only do they have to face more and more mutated infected people, but also have to deal with all kinds of natural disasters, the apocalyptic world is testing every survivor in its most cruel way.
