Chapter 1 - chapter 1: The Hunter’s Haunted

Shiyu at the casino:

The low hum of voices filled the casino, interwoven with the soft chime of slot machines and the clinking of expensive glasses. I moved silently through the crowd, blending in despite the hood drawn low over my face. Tonight wasn't for gambling—it was for gathering information. And right now, I was watching my target, Lucas, the spoiled son of a well-connected business tycoon.

James's voice buzzed in my earpiece, clear and precise. "Shiyu, keep a close watch on Lucas. He's involved in something bigger, and we need to know what."

Lucas sat at a private table, flanked by men who looked every bit as shady as he did. I slipped a little closer, careful to stay unnoticed. This was my territory—moving undetected was second nature. But then something shifted in the atmosphere, an electric prickle on the back of my neck.

Someone was watching me.

The feeling intensified, and I scanned the room, every instinct on high alert. But all I saw were ordinary faces—people lost in their games and drinks. My unease grew. I hadn't made any mistakes. Yet the presence was unmistakable, pressing in on me like a shadow.

"Shiyu, you're exposed," James's voice cut through my thoughts, more urgent now. "Leave. Now."

I clenched my jaw. How could anyone know I was here? Our organization's operations were locked down, invisible. But just as I was about to leave, my phone buzzed—a new message, from an unknown number: "Send me your organization details, or you all will die."

My blood ran cold. No one had ever breached our security—not like this. Whoever they were, they had somehow slipped through every safeguard.

"James," I whispered, heart pounding, "I got a message. It's a threat—"

"I got it too," James replied, his tone grim. "This message wasn't meant for me. It was for you. Someone's breached our system, and they know everything. They're after you, Shiyu."

The fear I felt was new, foreign. The air felt thicker, and as I looked around, every stranger's face seemed like a potential threat.

"Get out. Go dark," James insisted.

I forced myself to stay calm, but the image of that message lingered, its threat wrapping around me like a noose. Someone knew me. And that made them the most dangerous kind of enemy.

Kai's other corner of the casino:

Across the room, I watched her—a shadow within the shadows, careful, calculating. Shiyu, the assassin known for her precision and ruthlessness. I knew everything about her: her movements, her methods, her weaknesses. She was a challenge, yes, but one I intended to break.

The message I sent her was bait. It was designed to make her look for me, to draw her into the web I'd been weaving. My fingers tapped idly against the table as I observed her reactions—every flicker of fear in her eyes, every careful, contained motion. I had studied her long enough to know her routines, her defenses. Shiyu was careful, but no one was beyond my reach.

I'd been hired by the government to take out assassins—an ironic task, considering my role as the underworld's most powerful tycoon. But it was a useful arrangement. While my influence kept other criminals under control, my ties to the government allowed me unrestricted access to information and resources. It was the perfect cover, giving me immunity while I dealt with those who posed threats to my empire.

Shiyu didn't know it, but she'd been marked from the start. Her team, her methods—they were all cataloged in my database. All I needed was to push her the right way, to break her confidence until she had no choice but to confront me.

I watched her leave the casino, her steps hurried and tense. She knew she was in trouble, but she had no idea just how deep. A thrill stirred within me as I saw her glance back, searching for a threat she couldn't see. She was walking into my trap, and there was nowhere left for her to hide.

Shiyu at her apartment:

The night was heavy as I reached my apartment, the message still burning in my mind. How could they know? I threw my jacket on the chair, the room feeling too quiet, too exposed. Every instinct told me to run, but I forced myself to stay.

I stepped into the shower, hoping the hot water would clear my head. But even as the steam filled the room, I couldn't shake the sensation of being watched. Whoever this was, they knew me—knew my team. And they'd breached security that was supposed to be unbreakable.

My phone buzzed again. James's name lit up the screen.

"We're pulling out," he said, voice tight. "Go dark. Now."

"Why?" I demanded, gripping the phone. "We don't run. I need to know who's doing this."

"They're watching us, Shiyu," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "If they know you, they could know all of us. This isn't a game. We're vulnerable."

The line went dead. I stared at the phone, the silence wrapping around me like a shroud. For the first time, I felt a crack in the confidence I'd built over years. Someone was coming for us, and I had no idea who they were.

Kai's Life: The Underworld Tycoon and Government Secret Assassin Hunter

In the underground world I ruled, secrets were currency, and I held the wealth of empires. People feared me, whispered my name—Kai, the unseen hand that could bring down kingdoms. But while my influence reached far, my alliance with the government was my most valuable tool.

I worked in the shadows, eliminating threats that even they couldn't touch. When they needed an assassin neutralized, they called me. It was mutually beneficial: they got a clean hit, and I got access to intelligence beyond anything in the underworld.

Tonight, my focus was Shiyu. She was clever, ruthless, the best of her kind. But she was still human, and like all humans, she had weaknesses. I'd seen the flicker of fear in her eyes, the slight hitch in her step. She was beginning to realize she was trapped—and that was exactly where I wanted her.

She would seek me out. She would have no choice.

Kai's POV (Tracking Shiyu):

I didn't need to be in the same room as her to know what she was doing. The cameras were in place, the systems monitored, and every movement she made was logged. Shiyu was good—too good for her own sake—but she was human, and no one escapes my reach forever.

As I watched her through the security feed, I couldn't help but smile. She had made it to her apartment, her steps hurried but controlled, her mind racing even though she didn't realize it. She was already processing what had happened, her survival instincts kicking in, no doubt trying to figure out how to fight back, how to hide. But I knew she would make the mistake that all prey made sooner or later—she'd believe that she was safe for just a moment too long.

I leaned back in my chair, fingers grazing the surface of my desk as I observed the screen. The footage of her entering the apartment was smooth, seamless—just another quiet evening for her, or so she thought.

But I knew better. She didn't realize that her apartment, like every other place she frequented, was under constant surveillance. There were no shadows where she could hide, no corner left unmonitored. Cameras, mics, trackers—nothing slipped past me.

Shiyu was good at erasing her trail, but no one could fully vanish in a world where I controlled the narrative. My fingers hovered over the control panel, zooming in on her movements as she entered the apartment. I watched her drop her jacket, her face a mask of frustration and fear. She was already making mistakes—too many of them. The first was underestimating me.

I tapped a few buttons, switching between different angles of her apartment. I could see everything—hear everything. I didn't need to be there to be in control. She was mine, and soon, she'd realize that running was no longer an option.

Vincent's Arrival at the Office:

The quiet in my office was interrupted by a knock. Vincent, my most trusted associate, entered, his expression somber.

"Kai," he greeted, nodding as he placed a sealed file on my desk. "We have a new target. High priority. They want her gone as soon as possible."

I raised an eyebrow, flipping open the file to find Shiyu's photo staring back at me. So, they wanted her dead now. It was almost too perfect.

"Shiyu," Vincent said. "They're putting her down as a government-level threat. They need you to eliminate her and her team."

A smile played at the corners of my mouth. The chase had reached its final stage. Now, all that was left was for her to come to me.
