Chapter 1 - Chapter 001: The Grade's Top Dog

The solemn examination atmosphere had persisted in Yunzhong for two days, and by Tuesday afternoon, after the last math test, all senior three students were temporarily liberated.

Jiang Shuyao returned to the classroom from the exam to find her deskmate Tang Xing discussing answers with a few girls.

"It should be B, I've done a similar question before, I remember."

"Exactly, just asked the study rep, he chose B too, these three points are in the bag."

Seeing Jiang Shuyao coming back, Tang Xing cheerfully greeted her and casually asked her, "Yaoyao, for the starred multiple-choice question, what did you choose?"

Jiang Shuyao thought for a moment: "C."

...

The classroom was filled with a variety of answers, with nearly eighty percent choosing B, but this was the first time anyone had heard someone choose C.

Suddenly, the classroom fell silent. Jiang Shuyao instinctively looked up to find everyone staring at her, and couldn't help but feel startled.

This new transfer student, since her first day parachuting into class six, had been observed by many, both openly and covertly.

A young girl of about seventeen or eighteen, with clear brows and clean eyes, slightly flushed peach blossom eyes like waves glimmering over a spring lake, bright and lively.

She sat upright at the desk, her backpack neatly placed on her lap, quiet to the point of being almost unnoticed, yet she also had a purity about her that was hard to ignore.

Luckily, this awkward yet friendly staring was timely interrupted by Tang Xing speaking up.

"Ah, the exam's over, discussing answers will only affect our mood, Yaoyao, let's go eat."

After saying that, she took Jiang Shuyao's hand and walked her out as if a valiant knight was rescuing a princess who fell into enemy hands, the protective intent was unmistakable.

The two girls shared similar personalities and being deskmates, Tang Xing quickly became Jiang Shuyao's first friend at the new school, in just a few short days.

Being new to the area around Yunzhong, and considering there were evening self-study sessions in senior three, to save time, Tang Xing suggested going straight to the cafeteria for fried sauce noodles, and Jiang Shuyao just smiled and nodded in agreement.

Her smile was beautiful, with shallow dimples on her cheeks and her clear, slightly curved big eyes exuding a natural, green shyness.

At the corner of the corridor, a boy leaned lazily against the stair railing, engrossed in watching a soccer match.

Sensing something, he slowly lifted his eyelids, and beneath his thick brows, a pair of black, cold eyes caught the sweet, soft smile of the girl.

Suddenly, he smiled.

Turning off his mobile phone and picking up the milk tea that was resting beside him, he strode towards Jiang Shuyao.

At this moment, the corridor sank into a spooky silence; the passing boys and girls didn't dare to stop but couldn't help but steal glances at the lone, cool figure.

It was like the villian had descended upon the earth without warning, giving them a sense of both excitement and fear.

Tang Xing and Jiang Shuyao were equally stimulated.

"Yaoyao, at our twelve o'clock direction, that boy walking this way is our Yunzhong's grade leader."

Her deskmate whispered the information, not daring to raise her eyelids.

Jiang Shuyao looked at the cool-faced boy ahead and asked with mixed feelings of amusement and disbelief, "What leader, is he good at academics?"

"What good, he's at the bottom of every exam, what I meant by leader is... uh, the school's big shot."

As Tang Xing finished speaking, the step of the person beside her suddenly halted.

The girl's expression was no longer as relaxed; frowning, she asked, "Does he have a bad reputation?"

Tang Xing quickly nodded, "More than bad, he's completely rotten, even the head of student affairs has to take a detour when he sees him."

"..."

Okay, she had been careless.

Jiang Shuyao turned on her heel, dragging Tang Xing to quickly evacuate in the opposite direction.

Her deskmate was confused: "Yaoyao, this way won't take us to the cafeteria."

"We're not going to the cafeteria, we'll eat outside, my treat."

Stars appeared in Tang Xing's eyes as she quickly clung to the transfer student's coattails.

Behind them, the boy's smile disappeared in an instant, and his eyes suddenly darkened.

Watching the girl's figure racing faster than a rabbit, he couldn't be bothered to chase and slowly pulled out his mobile phone from his pocket, sliding his slender fingers across the screen, and dialed a number.

...

Buzz... buzz…

The phone in the backpack began to vibrate incessantly, like a death knell piercing straight through the girl's small heart from her back.

Her steps hastened, so much so that Tang Xing had to run to keep up, "Hey, Yaoyao, it's still early, we don't need to rush like this."

Realizing she had overreacted, Jiang Shuyao slowed down and flashed an apologetic smile, "Sorry, I've always walked like this, it's a habit."

She had often been chased by that jerk as a child, and really, her long legs owed much to him.

"Huh? I heard a phone vibrating, Yaoyao, it seems like it's yours."

"Don't worry about it, probably just telemarketing."

The calls continued one after another, seemingly without any wish to stop. Concerned, Tang Xing said, "Why don't you take a look? What if it's an emergency call from your family?"

Under her deskmate's innocent gaze, Jiang Shuyao relented and reluctantly began to fumble with her backpack's zipper.

Coincidence would have it that as soon as she pulled out the phone, the vibration stopped, and a WeChat notification popped up at the top of the screen.

[Bought you a mango pudding, hurry back and get it.]

The person who sent the message was noted by the girl as—Little Rascal.

The familiar tone was chilly, raw-cold, and authoritative.

Jiang Shuyao calmly put away her phone, pretending not to see it, and continued to lead Tang Xing toward the school gate.

Mobile phones were forbidden in the examination room, so she had muted it and left it in the classroom; not seeing the message was completely normal.

With reason and perfectly logical, she could eat her fried sauce noodles in peace.
