Chapter 8 - Unneutered Leo and Max

Watching as Damian and Lucas left the cat room, Evan suddenly remembered something important. Ignoring the strange bond he felt with Leo, he hurried over to the cat's side. It seemed that Leo sensed this unique connection too; he didn't run away but instead sat quietly, as if he had been waiting for Evan to come closer.

Evan carefully picked Leo up and gently turned him over, suppressing the urge to pet him slowly. He glanced down, trying to confirm the thing he was most concerned about. Sure enough, the area he worried about was still intact… In an instant, Evan felt a mix of emotions—Leo hadn't been "fixed" yet, but who knew what plans the future might hold? What if one day Leo really was neutered? Wouldn't he experience that same feeling himself?!

Even more troubling was the thought that, if Leo remained unneutered, spring would come… Evan suddenly pictured a frantically restless scenario and felt tears welling up in his heart. He silently vowed to figure out the nature of their connection as soon as possible and find a way to break it; otherwise, he would truly find it hard to eat or sleep.

Taking a deep breath, he slowly set Leo back down, looking at the little guy with a complicated expression. He couldn't help but murmur to himself, "Leo, I'm begging you, please stay healthy in the days to come. I'll come every day to check on you."

Leo seemed to understand Evan's plea but acted aloof, proudly raising his tail and elegantly striding away, leaving Evan standing there with a wry smile, watching Leo's retreating figure, feeling a mix of emotions.

Evan forced himself to push aside his complex feelings and reminded himself that the most important thing now was to check on Max's health. After all, he felt an unexpected sense of camaraderie with Max and genuinely wanted to help him resolve his issues; on the other hand, this was also a key reason for him to stay here. So, he crossed through the cat area and followed Lucas's guidance into a small room filled with medical equipment.

Though the room was for medical use, it lacked a cold, sterile atmosphere. The walls were painted a gentle light blue, and small green plants adorned a few corners. A string of vibrant vines hung from the windowsill, swaying gently in the breeze, encouraging a sense of relaxation. This setup was clearly intended to put the pets being examined at ease. The floor was covered with soft carpet, and a few stuffed toys were carelessly placed in the corners, adding a warm, homely touch to the space.

Evan scanned the small room, his gaze settling on the examination table. Max was sitting quietly on the table, patiently waiting, as if he were fully aware of the situation and relaxed. Evan smiled gently, stepped closer, and softly patted Max's head, saying, "Good boy, you're so well-behaved. Today, I'm here to help you check for any discomfort."

As soon as he finished speaking, a thought flashed through Evan's mind. He hesitated for a moment, then gently laid Max down on the table, intending to confirm whether Max had been "fixed." Having just checked Leo, he figured he might as well take the opportunity to check Max's health in this area, just in case there were any issues. Evan meticulously examined the sensitive area several times, knowing that such spots required utmost care. To his surprise, Max was incredibly cooperative throughout, as if he trusted Evan completely.

Once the examination was done, everything appeared normal. Evan let out a sigh of relief and gently patted Max's shoulder to signal him to stand up. Max obediently got to his feet, but the usually regal expression on his face revealed a hint of shyness, as he lowered his head and tilted his ears slightly back, seemingly avoiding Evan's gaze with embarrassment.

Evan couldn't help but smile; this dog's reaction was surprisingly adorable. He chuckled softly, reassuringly saying, "Don't be shy! I'm a doctor, just making sure you're healthy."

After a thorough examination, Evan found that Max was perfectly fine in all respects. Clearly, this wasn't the reason for Max's discomfort. Following standard procedure, he continued to inspect Max's entire body in detail, including his eyes and teeth, making sure he didn't miss anything.

Gently prying open Max's mouth, Evan checked his pearly whites and found them to be in excellent condition. But as he gazed into Max's eyes again, his confusion deepened. Although the physical exam results were all good, the unease emanating from Max was undeniable. Was it a psychological issue? Yet Max didn't seem to fit that description. Just then, Max appeared to sense Evan's thoughts, wagging his tail in response.

Evan quietly asked, "Max, are you feeling unhappy?" Max seemed to understand, human-like, as he wagged his tail and even spun in a circle on the examination table, displaying an unmistakably cheerful demeanor, as if to tell Evan he was fine. Evan sighed, realizing he might be overthinking things.

He decided to take a more comprehensive approach to the examination and immediately prepared the X-ray machine and blood test equipment. As the machines whirred to life, Evan silently prayed he would find a clue. However, all the results came back normal, and his doubts only intensified. Was it possible he and Mr. Damian had been too concerned? Max was clearly an exceptionally healthy dog, even more so than the average canine.

The only thing that puzzled him was Max's skeletal structure, which seemed a bit off compared to normal dogs, and his bone density appeared slightly low. But could these really be the cause of Max's discomfort? Questions swirled in Evan's mind, as if all the answers lay before him but remained just out of reach.

Just as Evan was lost in his thoughts, Max seemed to sense his worry. He affectionately walked over, gently nudging Evan with his head, as if to comfort him, conveying the message, "Don't worry, everything will be alright." This sweet gesture only strengthened Evan's determination; he was resolute in his quest to uncover the root of Max's issues, no matter the cost.
