Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Shattered Veils

The abyss stretched before them, its oppressive darkness growing thicker with every step. The faint glow of the Codex provided a fragile beacon, its light barely penetrating the dense shadows. Each footfall echoed eerily, as if the very air carried whispers from an unseen presence. The battle with the Sentinel had left them drained, but there was no turning back now.

Aureon leaned heavily on Nia's shoulder, his breaths shallow. The Codex, which had once thrummed with vibrant power, now felt dormant, its glow dim and flickering. It was as if the artifact itself mourned its own waning strength.

"How much further?" Kieran asked, his voice cutting through the silence. He walked ahead of them, sword drawn, scanning the horizon for any signs of danger.

"Not far," Aureon replied, his voice weak but resolute. "The Codex resonates more strongly the closer we get. We're nearing the heart of the abyss."

Nia tightened her grip on his arm. "If the Codex can sense it, so can whatever guards it. We can't afford another battle like the last one."

Kieran smirked over his shoulder. "Afraid we can't take whatever comes next?"

"It's not fear—it's caution," Nia shot back, her tone sharp. "We barely survived the Warden. You think we're invincible?"

Kieran shrugged but didn't respond. The weight of her words was undeniable.

The Rift's Edge

As they pressed forward, the terrain began to shift. The jagged rocks gave way to smooth, glass-like surfaces that reflected warped images of the group. Kieran stopped in his tracks, staring at his distorted reflection.

"What is this place?" he muttered.

Aureon lifted his head weakly, his eyes narrowing as he studied the shimmering surface. "This... this is the Rift's Edge. It's said to be a boundary between our world and the abyssal core. The reflections are... echoes of the abyss, fragments of its memories."

Nia stepped closer to one of the reflective surfaces. Her mirrored image didn't mimic her movements. Instead, it tilted its head, its eyes glowing faintly.

"Nia," Aureon said sharply, "don't look too closely."

But it was too late. Her reflection smiled—a dark, twisted version of herself—before melting into a swirling pool of shadow. From the depths of the mirror, a hand shot out, clawed and grotesque, reaching for her.

Kieran lunged forward, slicing through the shadowy hand before it could grab her. The reflection shattered like glass, sending shards of darkness flying.

"What the hell was that?" Kieran demanded, pulling Nia back.

"The abyss is testing us," Aureon said grimly. "It's not just trying to stop us—it's trying to break us."

The Abyss Strikes

The air around them grew colder, and the whispering voices became louder, echoing from every direction. The reflections in the glass surfaces began to move on their own, stepping out of the mirrors one by one. Each was a distorted version of the group, their features warped and eyes glowing with abyssal energy.

Aureon's reflection held a dark, cracked version of the Codex, its pages dripping with black ichor. Kieran's doppelgänger wielded a blade that pulsed with malevolent power, while Nia's counterpart moved with a predatory grace, her twin daggers coated in shadow.

"They're us," Nia whispered, her voice trembling.

"Not us," Aureon corrected. "They're what the abyss wants us to become—broken, corrupted."

The reflections attacked without warning. Kieran met his doppelgänger head-on, their blades clashing in a flurry of strikes. The mirrored version matched his movements perfectly, a mocking grin on its face.

"Damn it!" Kieran growled. "It's like fighting my own shadow!"

Nia faced off against her dark counterpart, dodging its swift strikes with practiced ease. But the longer she fought, the more she realized it was learning her moves, adapting to her every attack.

Aureon, weakened and unable to fight, clutched the Codex tightly. His reflection advanced on him, the blackened Codex glowing ominously. Desperate, he focused on the faint light within the real Codex, summoning what little power he had left.

"I won't let you win," Aureon whispered, his voice filled with determination.

Light in the Darkness

As the battles raged on, Aureon's Codex began to glow brighter, responding to his will. The reflections hesitated, their movements faltering as the light grew stronger.

"Kieran! Nia!" Aureon shouted. "Focus on the light! Don't let the darkness control you!"

Kieran snarled as he drove his blade through his doppelgänger's chest. The shadowy figure dissolved into smoke, its twisted grin lingering even as it faded.

Nia, inspired by Aureon's words, feinted to the side and struck her counterpart with a precise blow. The dark reflection let out an otherworldly shriek before collapsing into a pool of shadows.

The light from the Codex intensified, and Aureon directed it toward his own reflection. The corrupted version let out a furious roar before shattering into fragments of light and shadow.

The Path Forward

The battlefield fell silent once more, the shattered reflections fading into nothingness. The group stood together, breathing heavily but victorious.

"Is it over?" Kieran asked, scanning the area for any remaining threats.

"For now," Aureon said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Nia placed a hand on his shoulder. "You saved us again. But you can't keep doing this alone."

Aureon nodded, his expression solemn. "I know. But the closer we get to the abyssal core, the harder it will be. We need to stay together, no matter what."

Kieran sheathed his sword and let out a weary sigh. "Together, huh? Guess that means I'll have to keep saving your sorry asses."

Despite the tension, Nia managed a faint smile. "Let's just hope we can save yours too."

The group pressed on, leaving the shattered reflections behind. The Rift's Edge was just the beginning, and the abyss's true horrors awaited them in the depths beyond.
