Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Bonds That Break

The clash of blades echoed through the desolate plains, each strike reverberating with the weight of years lost. Nia's arms trembled as she parried Kieran's relentless attacks, the force behind his strikes threatening to overwhelm her. The brother she had known was gone, replaced by this shadowy warrior consumed by the abyss.

"Kieran!" she cried, her voice breaking with desperation. "Stop this! You're not their pawn!"

Kieran's expression remained cold, his abyss-tainted eyes narrowing as he pressed forward. "You don't understand, Nia. The abyss isn't my enemy—it's my salvation. It gave me purpose when everything else abandoned me. Even you."

His words struck harder than his blade, and for a moment, Nia faltered. That split second was all Kieran needed. His sword lashed out, grazing her arm and forcing her to stumble back.

"Nia!" Aureon shouted, his golden blade cleaving through the air as he rushed to intercept Kieran. The two clashed again, light and shadow colliding in bursts of power that illuminated the barren landscape.

Aureon's strikes were swift and precise, but Kieran was unrelenting. Each of his movements seemed fueled by an unnatural energy, his attacks growing faster and more unpredictable.

"You can't save him," Aureon called out to Nia as he locked blades with Kieran. "The abyss's grip on him runs too deep. He's already lost!"

"No!" Nia shouted, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and sorrow. "I won't give up on him!"

Summoning every ounce of resolve, she surged forward, her blade glowing faintly with the remnants of the light she had awakened earlier. The warmth of it steadied her shaking hands as she joined the fray.

"Kieran, listen to me!" she pleaded, her strikes aimed not to harm but to disarm. "You're still in there—I know you are!"

Kieran hesitated for the briefest moment, his blade faltering mid-swing. For a fleeting second, Nia thought she saw recognition in his eyes, a glimmer of the brother she had loved.

But the abyss would not relinquish its hold so easily. The shadowy energy around him flared, and his expression hardened once more.

"I chose this, Nia," he said, his voice cold and resolute. "You can't save me."

With a roar, Kieran unleashed a wave of abyssal energy that forced both Nia and Aureon back. The sheer force of it sent Nia sprawling to the ground, her weapon slipping from her grasp.

"Nia!" Aureon called out, his golden aura flaring as he tried to shield her from the brunt of the attack.

Kieran advanced, his blade poised to strike. "This ends here," he said, his voice tinged with finality.

But as he raised his weapon, something within Nia stirred—a fierce, unyielding light that refused to be extinguished. She reached out instinctively, her hand grasping the air. Her blade flew to her palm, its edge now glowing with a golden brilliance that outshone even Aureon's radiance.

Kieran paused, his eyes narrowing at the sudden burst of power. "What… is that?"

Nia rose to her feet, her body enveloped in a radiant aura. The whispers of the abyss that had plagued her were gone, drowned out by the clarity of her resolve.

"This is who I am," she said, her voice steady and unwavering. "And I will bring you back, Kieran, no matter what it takes."

She launched herself forward, her movements fluid and precise. Each strike of her blade pushed Kieran back, the light repelling the abyssal energy that surrounded him.

"Nia, wait!" Aureon called out, but she didn't stop.

With a final, desperate swing, Nia's blade connected with Kieran's, shattering the abyssal weapon in his hands. The impact sent him flying back, his body hitting the ground with a heavy thud.

For a moment, there was silence. The oppressive energy of the abyss seemed to waver, as though unsure of itself.

Nia approached Kieran cautiously, her glowing blade still in hand. "Kieran," she said softly, kneeling beside him. "Please. Come back to me."

He looked up at her, his eyes flickering between the abyss's corruption and the man he once was. "Nia… I…"

The abyss fought back, its tendrils of shadow writhing around him as it tried to reclaim its hold. But Nia didn't back down. She placed her hand over his, her light spreading to envelop them both.

"You're stronger than this," she said, her voice filled with unwavering determination. "The abyss doesn't own you. It never did."

Kieran's expression twisted with pain as the shadows recoiled from the light. "I… I tried to protect you," he whispered, tears streaming down his face. "But I failed."

"No," Nia said, her own tears falling. "You didn't fail. You never did."

The light grew brighter, piercing through the darkness that clung to him. With a final, anguished cry, Kieran collapsed, the abyss's hold shattering like glass.

Aureon approached, his expression a mixture of relief and caution. "Is it over?"

Nia cradled Kieran in her arms, his breathing shallow but steady. "For now," she said, her voice heavy with emotion.

But deep within the abyss, something stirred—a presence far more powerful and malevolent than anything they had faced before. And though the bond between Nia and Kieran had been mended, the war against the abyss was far from over.
