Chapter 80 - Chapter 80: At the Break of Dawn

The Great Hall of the school was awash with celebration. Augustus and Loki had just stepped out when they were immediately surrounded by a crowd. Hermione, barely coherent, congratulated them on uncovering the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets. First-year Colin seemed to have found a new idol, darting around to take as many photographs of Augustus as possible, though Loki stopped him before he became too intrusive. Justin hurried over from the Hufflepuff table, bowing excitedly to Augustus. Meanwhile, Lilian and Malfoy sat at the Slytherin table, smiling as they watched Augustus at the center of the throng. The students, still in their pajamas, celebrated late into the night, dispersing only when Dumbledore arrived with the other teachers.

"First, let me say this: the creature from the Chamber of Secrets has been completely vanquished thanks to the efforts of Augustus, Harry, and their companions," Dumbledore announced, his voice carrying across the hall. The students erupted into cheers. The shadow that had loomed over Hogwarts was finally lifted, and a collective sigh of relief swept through the crowd.

"And so, we are awarding 200 points to Augustus, and 100 points each to Loki, Harry, and Ron," Dumbledore continued, raising his hand to quiet the students as he revealed the much-anticipated point distribution. As soon as he finished, the Slytherin table broke into another round of cheers. Malfoy, looking smug, clapped enthusiastically as if he had personally contributed to the points. The Slytherin hourglass swelled with emerald sand, leaving the other three houses far behind.

Harry's expression dimmed slightly; it was clear Gryffindor would once again miss out on the House Cup. Being in the same year as Augustus was both a privilege and a curse. Augustus's unparalleled abilities ensured Slytherin's dominance year after year.

Even the ever-stoic Snape showed a rare hint of satisfaction. Having a student like Augustus was a boon for any teacher. His talent and capability were unmatched at Hogwarts, proven repeatedly in the dueling club and during lessons. Augustus's presence was like the lone moon in the night sky, rendering the stars dim by comparison.

"It seems the decorations here need a change," Dumbledore said with a smile, clapping his hands lightly. Instantly, the Great Hall transformed into a sea of green. The teachers extended their congratulations to Snape, who stood and politely acknowledged them, his joy barely concealed behind his composed demeanor. The Slytherin students cheered again, their laughter filling the hall. Augustus, too, allowed a faint smile to grace his face.

Professor McGonagall stood and announced that, in light of the crisis being resolved, the term exams would be canceled. Hermione's expression soured at the news, though most students erupted into cheers—no exams this term was a rare and welcome gift for many.

Raising his hand, Dumbledore called for silence once more. "There is one more thing to announce. Unfortunately, Professor Lockhart will not be returning next term."

The students, who had just calmed down, burst into cheers again, with some even whistling. A few teachers couldn't hide their approval either. Amid so many exciting developments, Harry wasn't sure which was the most thrilling. Perhaps the only lingering regret was the loss of the House Cup.

"How unfortunate," Malfoy said with a smirk, helping himself to a jelly-filled doughnut. "I was just beginning to like Lockhart."

"Well, well, Malfoy," Lilian said, her lips curving into a mischievous smile. "It seems you've reached the age of budding romance. Don't be shy—pursue your love bravely. Even if Lockhart is gone, you'll still have a chance. I'm sure you'll win his heart."

"Spare me!" Malfoy groaned, looking genuinely nauseated.

"You're not getting any younger," Loki added, nodding approvingly at Lilian's suggestion. "It's time to think about your future. I actually think Lockhart would be a good match for you."

Malfoy turned to Augustus for help. Augustus smiled slightly. "Don't tease him too much." Relieved, Malfoy relaxed—until Augustus continued, "Wasn't it always Neville?" Malfoy's face froze, and he suddenly questioned whether he still believed in love.

The rest of the summer term passed under the golden glow of sunlight. Hogwarts returned to its usual rhythm, though there were a few notable changes: Defense Against the Dark Arts classes were canceled, and Lucius Malfoy was removed from the school board. His attempt to exploit the influence of ancient families to oust Dumbledore had backfired, alienating many powerful allies. His dismissal served as a stark reminder of the far-reaching influence of Julius's family and their loyal network.

Before long, it was time to board the Hogwarts Express home. Augustus, Loki, Lilian, and Malfoy occupied a prefects' compartment. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating Augustus's white robes. His golden hair shimmered in the light, and his serene, handsome face reflected a quiet composure as he sat, a book in one hand and his chin lightly resting on the other, absorbed in his reading.

"Mr. Augustus," Lilian said, her gaze lingering on his striking figure. "I've advanced to Level Three in the past month, but I can't figure out whether magical strings remain useful after reaching the so-called 'legendary' stage. From the manual you provided, it seems no magical string can support the spells cast at that level."

"Legendary isn't so much a stage as it is a realm," Augustus explained, setting his book aside. "When you can treat the elements of the world as extensions of your own body rather than relying on magical strings as a bridge, then you've touched the edge of the legendary realm. But for now, this step is far beyond you. Many spend their entire lives unable to reach its threshold. Don't aim too high—focus on the fundamentals."

The three nodded, though their understanding was incomplete. The train sped forward, the green scenery outside gradually fading into memory. Augustus, radiant as snow, remained etched in their minds—a sight too brilliant to forget.
