Chapter 15: Beneath the Surface

The warship cut through the calm waters of the Grand Line as the crew regrouped and strategized. The rescued civilians rested below deck, their once-terrified expressions slowly giving way to relief. Stella stood on the deck, her eyes fixed on the horizon as the memories of the recent battle lingered in her mind.

Michael emerged from the war room, his face as unreadable as ever. He carried a stack of documents retrieved from the Shadows' command post. Stella turned to him as he approached, her emerald eyes filled with curiosity and concern.

"Did you find anything useful?" she asked.

Michael nodded, holding up a ledger. "Plenty. The Shadows' operations span far beyond Sabaody. They've got connections in nearly every major port along the Grand Line."

Stella's breath caught. "How are they this organized? And why hasn't the Navy dismantled them before?"

Michael's expression darkened. "They've been operating in secrecy, using proxies and intermediaries to hide their movements. But it's not just their network that's the problem—it's their support. They have powerful allies, people who profit from their crimes."

Stella clenched her fists, anger flaring in her chest. "The Celestial Dragons…"

Michael didn't respond, but his silence spoke volumes. Stella's frustration grew as she thought of the countless lives destroyed by the Shadows and their enablers.

"What do we do now?" she asked, her voice steady despite the storm brewing inside her.

Michael glanced at the documents in his hands, his sharp eyes calculating. "We follow the trail. There's a name mentioned repeatedly in these records—a broker operating out of Water 7. If we can find them, we might get closer to the Spider."

---

The crew gathered in the war room to discuss their next move. The atmosphere was tense but focused, the weight of their mission evident in every word spoken.

Rosinante leaned against the wall, his usual grin replaced by a thoughtful expression. "Water 7, huh? That's not exactly a quiet place to investigate."

Michael nodded. "That's why we'll go in discreetly. We'll dock outside the city and send a small team to gather intel. Stella, you'll come with me."

Stella straightened, her nerves tingling with anticipation. "Understood."

Rosinante raised an eyebrow. "And me? Am I just the babysitter for the ship now?"

Michael's lips twitched into a faint smile. "You'll hold down the fort. I need someone I trust to keep the crew safe while we're gone."

Rosinante sighed dramatically. "Fine, fine. But you owe me."

As the warship neared Water 7, the city came into view—a breathtaking metropolis built on canals, its towering structures glinting in the sunlight. Stella couldn't help but marvel at the sight, her earlier tension momentarily forgotten.

"It's beautiful," she murmured, leaning over the railing.

Michael stood beside her, his gaze steady. "It is. But don't let appearances fool you. Water 7 has its fair share of secrets."

The ship anchored outside the city limits, and Michael and Stella disembarked in a small boat. They moved quietly through the canals, the sound of water lapping against the walls their only companion.

Their destination was a bustling marketplace known for its vibrant colors and diverse crowd. Michael had chosen it as their starting point, knowing the Shadows would likely have a presence in such a busy area.

As they navigated the narrow streets, Stella kept her senses sharp, her eyes scanning every face. Michael led the way, his movements purposeful but unhurried. He seemed to blend seamlessly into the crowd, his presence commanding without drawing attention.

Stella struggled to match his composure. The noise and chaos of the market overwhelmed her at first, but she forced herself to focus. She couldn't afford to falter.

Michael stopped abruptly, his gaze locking onto a small, dimly lit tavern tucked between two larger buildings. He gestured for Stella to follow, his voice low. "This is it. Stay close."

They entered the tavern, the air thick with the scent of alcohol and smoke. The patrons barely glanced at them, their focus on their drinks and whispered conversations. Michael moved to a corner table, sitting with his back to the wall. Stella followed suit, her nerves prickling as she took in the room.

A burly bartender approached, his expression wary. "What'll it be?"

Michael's voice was calm but firm. "Information. We're looking for someone—a broker who deals in high-value shipments."

The bartender's eyes narrowed. "You got the wrong place, stranger. We don't deal in that kind of business."

Michael slid a pouch of coins across the table, his gaze steady. "I think you do."

The bartender hesitated, his eyes flicking to the pouch before leaning in. "There's a man—goes by the name Calder. Runs his business out of the southern docks. But you didn't hear it from me."

Michael nodded, rising from his seat. Stella followed him out of the tavern, her heart racing. "Do you think he's connected to the Shadows?"

Michael's expression was unreadable. "We're about to find out."

---

The southern docks were a stark contrast to the bustling marketplace—quiet, shadowed, and reeking of salt and fish. Stella felt a chill as they approached a warehouse, its large doors slightly ajar.

Michael gestured for her to stay back as he peered inside. The dimly lit interior revealed crates stacked high, their markings obscured by shadows. A group of men stood near the center, their voices low and tense.

"That's him," Michael whispered, nodding toward a tall, wiry man with a sharp face. "Calder."

Stella's pulse quickened as she watched Michael step forward, his presence commanding as he entered the warehouse. The men turned, their hands moving instinctively to their weapons.

"Relax," Michael said, his tone calm but firm. "I'm just here to talk."

Calder's eyes narrowed. "Who are you, and what do you want?"

Michael's gaze didn't waver. "I'm looking for the Spider."

The room fell silent, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. Calder's expression darkened, and his men shifted uneasily.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Calder said, his voice laced with caution.

Michael stepped closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous low. "Don't play games with me. I know you're working with the Shadows. Tell me what I need to know, and I might let you walk out of here."

Calder hesitated, his sharp eyes darting between Michael and the exit. "You're making a mistake, Navy. You don't know what you're dealing with."

"Then enlighten me," Michael said coldly.

Before Calder could respond, a loud crash echoed through the warehouse as the side doors burst open. A group of heavily armed men stormed in, their faces obscured by masks.

"Ambush!" Michael shouted, drawing his blade.

Stella's heart pounded as chaos erupted. She summoned a thick cloud to obscure their position, her instincts kicking in as the battle began. Michael moved with precision, his blade cutting through the attackers with lethal efficiency.

Stella focused on supporting him, using her clouds to create barriers and disarm their enemies. The fight was intense, the Shadows' forces more organized and aggressive than she had expected.

As the last of the attackers fell, Calder was nowhere to be found. Stella's breath came in ragged gasps as she scanned the warehouse, frustration building.

"He escaped," she said, her voice laced with anger.

Michael sheathed his blade, his expression calm despite the setback. "It doesn't matter. We've learned something important."

Stella frowned. "What's that?"

"The Spider knows we're coming," Michael said, his voice steady. "And they're starting to feel the pressure."
