Chapter 6 - A step forward?

Ryle closed the notebook, his thoughts running at full throttle despite the calm of the night. The words on the page didn't feel like enough, but they were all he had. He placed the notebook beside his bed and lay back, staring at the ceiling. Sleep didn't come easily; the silence around him felt heavy, and Faith's face lingered in his mind.

The dream found him again.

This time, it wasn't fragmented or fading. It was vivid, as if he were truly there. He stood on the bridge again, but the city was silent. No lights, no people, only the sound of the river below. And there she was—Faith.

She stood on the opposite end, her scarf fluttering in a wind he couldn't feel. Her face turned away, her posture distant, but Ryle knew it was her. He called out, but the words died down before they reached her.

He took a step forward, and the ground beneath him rippled, as if he was walking on water. He kept moving, each step heavier than the last, until he was close enough to see her clearly. She turned to face him, her expression unreadable.

"Faith," he whispered, but his voice echoed strangely, as if the world didn't recognize it.

She opened her mouth to speak, but instead of words, the sound of water filled the air. The tide surged, rising and swallowing the bridge. Ryle reached out, but before he could touch her, everything dissolved into blackness.

He woke up with a startle, his heart pounding. The first rays of dawn passed through the window, painting his room in soft hues of gold. His notebook sat on the desk, untouched since last night. He picked it up and wrote without thinking, his hand moving faster than his mind.

After a few moments, he put the pen down, staring at the page. He was done waiting. He couldn't let these dreams or fleeting moments slip away anymore. He had to find her. He didn't know what he would say, how he would start, but he had to know if Faith remembered him, too.

Ryle grabbed his bag, stuffing the notebook inside, and headed out. The city was waking up around him—people rushing to work, the hum of morning traffic, the smell of fresh ginger tea in the air. But for Ryle, everything felt clearer now. He had a purpose.

Somewhere out there, Faith was living her life. It was time for him to live his, and maybe, just maybe, their paths would cross again.

He wasn't going to let this chance slip away.
