Chapter 4 - An Angel

"Milo" Angel called out to the crippled boy who had already started to take apart the laser.

"Y~yes" Milo quickly picked his head up with a startled tone.

"How many smoke bombs do you have left?" Angel looked away from the sky and toward him.

"F~five!" Milo stuttered out but his face grew serious when he noticed Kade's gaze as well.

"I~I think…"

"Is that all?" Angel asked with a slight frown but Kade seemed pleased.

"The smoke bombs are only if we get caught" Kade spoke up.

"Which we don't plan to do, right?" Kade smiled toward Angel who let out a breath of annoyance.

"Things don't always go as planned" Angel pointed toward Milo's busted leg.

"Do they?" He chided causing the greenhouse to turn silent.

"Point taken" Kade nodded.

"Me and you will go scope it out tomorrow" The musclar boy looked toward Angel before standing back up.

"Get some rest" He grabbed a ration heading out the makeshift shelter.

Angel was left sitting in silence with the gaze so Sable burning into his side, Of course the two idiots were also staring in his direction as if waiting for him to speak.

"You heard him"

He took one last glance at Sable who watched him intently before walking out of the shelter. The air outside was thick with the scent of rust and decay that had become all to familiar, The dim lights casting a glow over the city of ruins.

Kade was sitting on the edge of the crumbling worn down roof with his legs dangling down. He only noticed Angel when he got a few feet away from him.

"Ah, The angel himself graces me with his presence" A smirk tugging at the boys lips.

"I'd smite you, But your're just a tiny bit useful" Angel rolled his eyes taking a seat to Kade's side.

"You know, You already have the looks, So all you need is a pair of wings" Kade muttered before his eyes went wide as if a great idea popped into his head.

"You know that body modder on Steel Row?" He asked as Angel stared at him blankly.

"He works for the red circuit, I think the crazy old man's name is Razerhand or something like that" Kade nodded.

"I hear he'll do any modifications for the right price"

"Even give our own Angel his pair of wings" He leaned toward Angel who kept his blank expression.

"Yea right, I'm not letting one of those nuts get anywhere near my spine" Angel pushed Kade with his annoying grin away.

"I heard something in the market today" Angel's tone turned serious which caused Kade to raise an eyebrow.

"Apparently the Red Circuit attacked the Syndicate"

"What!" Kade's eyes grew wide and he failed to hide the shock in his voice.

"Are you sure?" He quickly asked inching closer while looking back toward the greenhouse.

"No" Angel muttered

"But we both know it's better to be safe then sorry" He continued letting his feet kick over the tall ledge.

"Why can't the sentials just kill those crazy thugs already" Kade huffed out a breath with visable hatred in his eyes.

"Why would they?" Angel flicked a piece of small metal, Watching it fall into the allyway below.

"The factions might be self serving bastards but at the end of the day they keep the peace" His low voice mixed with the hum of machinery around them.

"And the sentials are only down here as a show of force by the Luxes" Angel was well aware that the sentials wouldn't lift a finger even if someone was dying in front of them.

Silence settled between the two once more only this time it seemed to be filled with an unseen weight. Kade chewed on his ration for a few moments with an obvious struggle to keep the gruel down, Eventually though he stood up.

"Don't stay up to late" Kade patted Angel on the arm before heading inside leaving leaving him alone.

'An angel huh?'

Angel couldn't help but chuckle leaning back against the crumbling ground. His eyes finding the sky with memories floating into his head.

Religion had basically faded over the years being nothing more then a set of scattered tails and fables. Angel's mother had been obsessed with the idea of god, Even in a world that had long since forgotten. She had named him after those celestial servants, Her quiet unwavering faith somehow unbroken by the ruin around them.

His mother would call him her Angel, Her little light.

But faith wasn't enough to fill a starving belly or keep sickness at bay. It hadn't stopped her from giving Angel whatever rations she had managed to find, Her frail hands pushing food toward him when he was to young to argue. By the time he'd understood what she was doing, It was already to late.

She'd grown too weak, her skin stretched tight over bones, her eyes clouded with a fever she couldn't shake. And eventually, she was gone leaving only the empty shell of a faith Angel had tried to carry in her name.

Perhaps that was why he felt a pang of disgust everytime he ate and why every bite tasted hollow. He couldn't help but feel he didn't deserve the food and nutrients, or the life he'd taken from his mother without meaning to.

His mother's ghost lingered at the edges of his mind, silent and ever watchful.

"I'm coming"

Angel was only drawn out of his thoughts when soft footsteps and an even softer voice rang out. He looked over his shoulder seeing Sable walking toward him, She took a seat at the place Kade had left abandoned and hugged her legs letting her head rest on top.

"No" Angel's voice was firm but the blue haired girl only stared at him in response.

"I wasn't asking"

"Alright" He quickly accepted with a nod that seemed to leave Sable speechless.

Of course Angel was aware that was just how she was.
