Inside the safehouse, I briefly recovered my strength. I splashed some water on my face from the source indicated by the system, chewed on a few dry crackers, and quickly organized my gear, preparing to continue my journey.
"Two more days of travel…" I muttered quietly, my eyes scanning the path marked on the map. "The laboratory is key, I hope I can make it there alive."
I tucked my handgun into my waist and gripped the steel rebar I had picked up. Taking a deep breath, I opened the iron door and stepped back into the zombie-ridden wasteland.
The closer I got to the direction of the laboratory, the more desolate the landscape became. The streets were eerily quiet, the number of zombies decreasing, replaced by an unsettling stillness. No growls, no footsteps, only the sound of the wind and my heavy breathing.
"It's too quiet…" I clenched my weapon, my eyes scanning the surroundings warily.
