The light from the Rift core burned like a blazing sun, illuminating the entire ruin as though it were daylight. The energy waves in the air stung my skin, and every step felt like walking on the edge of a blade.
"Lorne, don't get closer," Ariana warned, gripping her dagger tightly. "Its energy is already unstable. Recklessly touching it could cost you your life."
"I have no choice," I said quietly, raising my hand to try to touch the core. "If we don't shut it down, the Rift will consume everything."
"Shut up, mortal," Soren's voice resounded in my mind, filled with his usual arrogance and impatience. "Your stupidity never ceases to amaze me. Using such a reckless method to handle an energy core—are you trying to end your life?"
"Soren, now isn't the time to pick on me," I responded in a low voice. "If you have a solution, speak up."
