The air at the edge of the rift was filled with the stench of decay and sulfur, and some damaged signs and leftover equipment could be faintly seen beneath the ruins. Cain crouched beside an abandoned rift device, carefully examining the remaining nameplates.
"These things don't look like natural phenomena," I said, pointing to the equipment. "What are they?"
Cain looked up at me coldly and replied, "These are remnants from the Rift Laboratory. The devices you saw in the lab earlier are just a part of what these people were researching."
"The Rift Laboratory people?" I frowned. "Were they trying to exploit the rift?"
"Exactly," Cain nodded. "Before the apocalypse, these scientists tried to harness energy from the rift to access other dimensions, but the experiment went out of control, causing the rift to spread, turning this world into the wasteland it is now."
"So the portal was left behind by them?" I asked.
