Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Storm Within

Ling Xiao stood at the edge of the Ling family crypt, his mind heavy with the words of the figure cloaked in shadow. The encounter had rattled him, though he would never admit it aloud. There was something in the air, something in that ancient presence, that had unsettled him in a way he hadn't anticipated. The crypt felt alive in a way he could not explain, and the words the figure spoke echoed in his mind.

"No matter how far you run, the past will always find you."

For a brief moment, Ling Xiao had questioned the figure's true identity. Could it have been a spirit of his ancestors, or was it something darker? Something more malevolent? But the power in the figure's aura had been undeniable, a presence that seemed tied to the Ling bloodline a bloodline he had long sought to sever.

Ling Xiao shook his head and turned away from the crypt, his footsteps echoing in the dark hallway as he left the ancestral grounds behind. The past no longer held sway over him. The words of that mysterious figure had done nothing but fuel his determination. He was no longer the weakling. He was no longer the son of Ling Feng and Ling Mei. He was Ling Xiao, and he would carve his own path, free from the chains of his family's history.

The following days were spent in near-complete isolation, Ling Xiao's every action measured, every step calculated. He had unlocked the Boundless Meridian, and its power coursed through him constantly, like a living, breathing force. The energy was never far from the surface, and in moments of quiet reflection, he could feel it swelling within him, its grip tightening like a vice around his heart.

At times, it felt as if the power itself was calling him compelling him to act.

The world outside the estate seemed unchanged, people walking about with their petty concerns, their insignificant lives. Ling Xiao looked at them with the detachment of someone who had risen above them. He was untouchable. But his newfound power brought with it a sense of urgency. It was not just about surpassing his father or breaking free from the Ling family's expectations anymore. It was about mastery mastery over the energy that flowed within him, and mastery over the world itself.

One evening, as he meditated in the solitude of his room, the familiar tug of the Boundless Meridian gripped him. He could feel the energy swirling deep inside him, urging him to push beyond his limits. The Meridian was a force of unbridled potential, but it was still foreign to him. He had not yet fully understood its limits if it even had any.

He took a deep breath, exhaling slowly as he tried to center himself. His soul was the key to controlling this power, he had learned. The Meridian responded to his will, to his intentions. The stronger his resolve, the more the power would bend to his will.

Ling Xiao's body glowed faintly as his energy swirled outward, the room filling with the hum of it, vibrating with an intensity that shook the very air. He could feel the energy stretching, coiling, responding to his command. It was exhilarating. The very air around him seemed to shimmer, warping like heat rising from a blazing fire.

But then, just as quickly, a sudden thunderclap of pain struck him.

His vision blurred as the energy, uncontrollable for a split second, lashed out in a wave of destructive force. The walls of his room cracked and splintered, the furniture scattered like leaves in a storm. His body shook as the force of the power surged beyond his control, threatening to consume him.

"No."

With sheer force of will, he pulled the power back within himself, forcing it to heel. The storm inside him stilled. His breath was ragged, his chest rising and falling as the remnants of the chaotic energy dissipated, leaving only the faint echo of a hum in the air.

Ling Xiao closed his eyes, feeling the lingering burn in his chest. It was dangerous. But it was also thrilling.

He had to learn to control this power, to master it. If he didn't, it would consume him not unlike the darkness of his past. The power of the Boundless Meridian was his to wield, but only if he could conquer it fully.

The night was far from over when a quiet knock echoed on the door. Ling Xiao, still drenched in sweat from his earlier meditation, stood from the debris of his shattered room and straightened his robes. His mind was clear now, but the sharp edge of hunger still gnawed at him. Power was meant to be tested, after all. It was only through trial that a cultivator truly learned their limits.

When he opened the door, he found a familiar face standing in the dim light.

It was Shi Wen, a childhood friend or perhaps more accurately, a former friend. Shi Wen was of the same age as Ling Xiao, though their paths had always diverged. While Ling Xiao had struggled and been relegated to the margins of his family's expectations, Shi Wen had always been the perfect son, the one who had excelled in everything academics, cultivation, family affairs. He had been the golden child, the one who was supposed to carry on the Ling family's legacy.

But unlike Ling Xiao, Shi Wen had never been satisfied with mere compliance. There was a certain ambition hidden beneath his polished exterior, an ambition that had always made Ling Xiao wary.

"What are you doing here, Shi Wen?" Ling Xiao's voice was low, though not unfriendly. His violet eyes studied his old acquaintance with careful attention.

Shi Wen stepped forward, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. His eyes glinted with mischief and something more, something darker.

"I could ask you the same thing," Shi Wen replied, his voice smooth, though there was a noticeable edge to it. "I heard you've been… experimenting. I was curious if the rumors were true."

Ling Xiao narrowed his eyes. "And what rumors would those be?"

"Rumors about your… new abilities," Shi Wen said, taking another step closer. "Word travels quickly among those who are observant. They say you've unlocked the Boundless Meridian. That's no small feat."

Ling Xiao said nothing, his posture stiffening slightly. Shi Wen's gaze was knowing, too sharp for comfort.

"So, what is it that you want?" Ling Xiao asked, his tone cool, yet his curiosity piqued.

Shi Wen's smile grew wider. "You've become… powerful. I've heard about the destruction in your room. You know, not many could survive tapping into that kind of power without being consumed by it. I've always been intrigued by those who seek greatness at any cost."

Ling Xiao studied him for a moment, weighing the words carefully. It wasn't hard to see that Shi Wen wasn't here out of mere curiosity. He was testing him probing for something deeper.

"What do you want from me?" Ling Xiao asked, his voice flat, but with a note of finality.

Shi Wen paused, then leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "I want what you want. Power. But unlike you, I know how to get it without burning everything to the ground."

Ling Xiao raised an eyebrow. "And you think I don't?"

"I think," Shi Wen replied with a smirk, "that we could be of use to one another. You have power, but you lack control. That makes you vulnerable. But I know the ways to master it, to refine it."

Ling Xiao's lips curled into a faint smile, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "And why should I trust you? What's in it for me?"

Shi Wen's smile widened. "Everything. You seek to dominate the world, but power without understanding will only bring you chaos. Together, we could take control of not just the Ling Clan but the very fabric of the world itself."

Ling Xiao remained silent for a moment, his eyes calculating, weighing the proposition. Then, in a voice that barely rose above a whisper, he spoke:

"Fine. But remember this, Shi Wen: if you try to control me, I will destroy you."

Shi Wen chuckled softly. "I would expect nothing less."

End of Chapter 4

In Chapter 4, Ling Xiao continues to grapple with his new powers. After nearly losing control of the Boundless Meridian during his meditation, he realizes the danger and potential of his abilities. As he strives to gain mastery, he is confronted by Shi Wen, a childhood friend who seeks to align himself with Ling Xiao's newfound strength. Shi Wen offers a partnership, proposing that together they could dominate not only the Ling Clan, but the world. However, Ling Xiao remains wary, recognizing the potential threat Shi Wen poses to his freedom. Still, he agrees to the alliance, but with a warning: any attempt to control him would end in destruction.
