Autumn deepened as sycamore trees lining the streets turned shades of gold and crimson. Fallen leaves scattered on the ground danced softly with the breeze. Though the sun shone brightly, the crisp air carried hints of the approaching chill. Central Plaza was bustling, its elegant fountain surrounded by lively cafes. People strolled or hurried along, wrapped in seasonal clothing, while the rose statue in the plaza's center glimmered under the sunlight, adding a romantic warmth to the cool day.
Alia walked gracefully, her burgundy heels clicking lightly against the pavement. Her emerald-green long-sleeved dress, tailored to accentuate her slender waist, swayed gently as she moved. Over it, she wore a beige trench coat, slightly open at the collar to reveal a delicate necklace, lending her an air of understated elegance. A light breeze swept by, prompting her to pull the coat closer as she quickened her pace toward the meeting spot.
On the other side of the plaza, Lianna arrived in a pastel pink knee-length dress trimmed with fine lace, the hem resembling delicate, partially bloomed flowers. Her cream-colored heels complemented the softness of her outfit, while a white knit cardigan adorned with tiny pearl details draped her shoulders, exuding a sweet and lively charm. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her lips curving into a hopeful smile as she walked.
The two arrived at Central Plaza simultaneously. Spotting each other, Lianna playfully eyed Alia up and down.
"Wow, trench coat and dress combo—looking stunning as always! Which hearts are you breaking today, gorgeous?"
Alia chuckled, a glimmer of mischief in her smile. "Not as many as our sweet little princess here. This dreamy look of yours is perfect"
Laughing, they strolled together toward a cozy cafe they had agreed on.
The interior of the cafe was warm and elegant, with flower arrangements adorning the windowsills, complementing the autumnal scenery outside. The two chose a table by the window and ordered a hearty brunch.
The table soon filled with exquisite dishes: delicate French pancakes dusted with powdered sugar, paired with slices of fresh fruit; a basket of freshly baked croissants, golden and buttery, crisp on the outside and soft within; and an assortment of sandwiches layered with fresh ham and cheese, their savory aroma enticing.
But the highlight was a small dish of rose jam, served with toasted bread. Its delicate floral and fruity sweetness was perfectly balanced, leaving a lingering, refreshing aftertaste.
"This rose jam is amazing!" Lianna exclaimed, her eyes lighting up as she spread another dollop onto a croissant. "I have to bring a jar home with me this time!"
Alia nodded, sipping her hot milk tea, a serene smile gracing her lips. "It's delightful, and the atmosphere here makes it all the better for chatting."
As they savored their meal, they shared recent stories and laughter. The golden sunlight streaming through the glass warmed the table, and the gentle rustling of leaves outside seemed to slow time, creating a moment of pure tranquility.
After leaving the cafe, the warm sunlight still bathed the streets. Strolling arm-in-arm, Alia and Lianna wandered through nearby boutiques. They paused occasionally to admire window displays or discuss the latest fashion trends. Lianna, especially, appeared delighted, her eyes sparkling with childlike joy as she pointed out unique trinkets.
Just as Alia began to relax in the rare serenity, her attention was suddenly drawn to a fleeting figure in the distance. It was only a brief glimpse, but it seized her focus entirely.
"So much for a peaceful day," Alia sighed internally, quickly masking her thoughts with a composed expression. She turned to Lianna, offering an apologetic smile. "Lianna, I'm feeling a little unwell—probably ate a bit too much earlier. How about we call it a day? I'll make it up to you next time."
Lianna's face filled with concern. "Are you sure? Want me to walk you home?"
Alia shook her head lightly. "No need. You stay and enjoy yourself. Don't let me spoil your fun."
Though reluctant, Lianna nodded. "Alright, but make sure to rest. Let's plan another day soon!"
Watching Lianna leave, Alia turned toward the direction where the figure had disappeared. She adjusted her breathing, her steps quickening as she followed.
The chase soon proved challenging in her dress and heels. Alia scanned her surroundings and spotted a men's clothing store on the corner. Without hesitation, she stepped inside, her eyes swiftly scanning the racks. She grabbed a simple black jacket, pants, and sneakers, heading straight for the fitting room. Carefully folding her dress, she tucked it into her small bag.
In the mirror, she adjusted the brim of a borrowed hat to partially obscure her face. A wry smile crossed her lips as she muttered, "Guess I haven't lost my touch."
Emerging from the fitting room, she hesitated momentarily before her gaze landed on the price tags. Swiftly pulling cash from her bag, she left the exact amount on the counter, not waiting for a formal checkout. She exited the shop with fluid ease, her movements seamless and composed.
The crowd thinned as she walked, the figure she'd been tailing now out of sight. Yet Alia seemed undeterred, moving purposefully in a specific direction.
As a chill wind swept through the street, she drew her coat closer, her eyes sharp with focus. The warmth and gentleness of her earlier demeanor were gone, replaced by the cold precision of someone on a mission.
Under her breath, she murmured, "Long time no see, old friends."
