Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Into the Depths

The staircase spiraled down, seemingly endless, as the air grew cooler with each step. Torches along the walls ignited with ghostly blue flames, casting eerie shadows that danced across the damp stone.

"This place is doing a good job of making itself look like the final boss's lair," Riven muttered, his hand trailing along the rough wall.

Zaria glanced back at him, her lips twitching in a half-smile. "Would you rather it be bright and cheerful? Maybe some flower arrangements?"

"Hey, I wouldn't mind a softer landing spot after the trials," Riven replied with a grin.

"Focus," Orin said firmly, his sword resting on his shoulder. "We don't know what's waiting for us down here."

Nyron, walking slightly ahead, smirked. "You sound tense, Lightheart. Need me to hold your hand?"

Orin shot him a glare but kept moving. "I'm fine, thanks."

The banter eased the tension, but the oppressive atmosphere of the stairwell crept into their minds. Each step echoed louder than it should have, the sound reverberating as though the staircase itself were alive.

Finally, the group reached the bottom, stepping into a vast cavern illuminated by glowing crystals embedded in the walls and ceiling. In the center of the room stood a massive, intricately carved pedestal. Floating above it was a dark, pulsating orb, its surface swirling like ink in water.

"Let me guess," Nyron said, pointing at the orb. "That's the thing we're supposed to poke with a stick?"

"It's not just any stick," Zaria said, raising her staff. "That's a Nexus Core. They hold immense energy, but they're unstable. One wrong move, and it could collapse this entire cavern—or worse."

"Worse than a collapse?" Riven asked, arching an eyebrow.

"The kind of worse where you get erased from existence," Zaria said flatly.

Riven crossed his arms. "Yeah, let's not do that."

As the group moved closer, the ground trembled slightly. The orb pulsed, sending waves of dark energy rippling through the cavern.

"Something's guarding it," Orin said, his grip tightening on his sword. "Be ready."

Before anyone could respond, the shadows around the room began to coalesce, forming hulking figures with glowing red eyes. There were three of them, each wielding jagged weapons forged from the same dark energy as the orb.

"Well, there it is," Riven said, igniting his fists. "A welcoming committee."

"Let's make this quick," Nyron said, spinning his scythe. "I've got dinner plans."

The first shadow beast lunged at Orin, swinging a massive axe. Orin sidestepped, countering with a swift strike that sent sparks flying as his blade clashed with the beast's weapon.

Riven charged another, flames roaring around his fists. He ducked under the creature's swing and landed an explosive punch to its chest, sending it stumbling backward.

Zaria held her staff high, casting a protective barrier around the group as she chanted an incantation. Vines erupted from the ground, entangling one of the beasts and holding it in place.

"Nice work!" Orin called out, slashing at the trapped beast.

Nyron moved with deadly precision, his scythe slicing through the air as he danced around his opponent. Shadows swirled around him, mimicking his movements and lashing out at the beast.

"Is it just me, or are these things tougher than they look?" Riven asked, dodging another swing.

"They're being fueled by the Nexus Core," Zaria replied, her voice steady despite the chaos. "We need to disrupt it before they overwhelm us."

"Easier said than done!" Orin shouted, blocking a heavy blow.

Zaria took a deep breath, raising her staff. The crystal at its tip began to glow brighter as she concentrated. "Keep them off me! I'll try to destabilize the core!"

"You heard the lady," Riven said, throwing a wave of fire at his opponent. "Let's keep these guys busy."

The battle raged on, the group working in tandem to hold the shadow beasts at bay. Orin and Nyron focused on offense, their strikes precise and relentless, while Riven used his flames to keep the creatures disoriented.

Zaria stood at the edge of the pedestal, her staff glowing brighter as she channeled her magic. The orb pulsed violently, as if resisting her efforts.

"I need more time!" she called out, sweat beading on her forehead.

"No problem," Riven said, punching one of the beasts square in the face. "We've got all day!"

"Speak for yourself," Nyron muttered, narrowly dodging a swing. "This thing's getting faster."

The beast Nyron was fighting suddenly turned its attention to Zaria, charging toward her with a guttural roar.

"Zaria, look out!" Orin shouted, sprinting after the creature.

Zaria didn't flinch. With a flick of her wrist, she unleashed a burst of energy that sent the beast flying backward.

"I said I need time, not babysitting," she said, her tone sharp.

Orin skidded to a halt, nodding. "Right. Just hurry."

The orb began to crackle, dark tendrils lashing out as Zaria's magic grew stronger. "Almost... got it..."

The shadow beasts faltered, their movements becoming sluggish as the orb's energy wavered.

"Now's our chance!" Orin shouted. "Finish them off!"

With one final surge of effort, the group unleashed their strongest attacks. Orin's blade shimmered with light as he struck, Riven's flames roared like an inferno, and Nyron's shadows engulfed the remaining beasts.

Zaria let out a cry of triumph as the orb shattered, its dark energy dissipating into the air.

The cavern fell silent, the tension easing as the glow of the crystals returned to normal.

"That... was intense," Riven said, catching his breath.

Zaria lowered her staff, exhaustion evident on her face. "The Nexus Core is neutralized. We should be safe—at least for now."

Orin sheathed his sword, glancing at the others. "Let's move. If that was a test, I don't want to find out what comes next."

The group nodded, their resolve stronger than ever as they stepped deeper into the temple, ready for whatever awaited them.
