Chapter 56 - The Lap Dilemma

Delphinia didn't know how long she had been reading. Her voice was hoarse, her throat dry, and the words on the page seemed to blur together. She stopped reading, swallowing against the growing scratchiness in her throat. A sigh escaped her lips as she gently closed the book.

When she glanced down, she was greeted by the sight of Evander, sound asleep on her lap. His head was tilted slightly to one side, his dark lashes fanning over his cheekbones, and he looked so calm it made her chest tighten.

"How does someone like him look so innocent?" she muttered under her breath.

Delphinia placed the book to the side, her fingers lingering on its cover as she debated what to do next. Should she wake him up? She could really use a drink right now—her throat felt like sandpaper—but the thought of disturbing him made her hesitate.
