Chapter 36 - ch36

The name "Kurama" felt so familiar!

No one had called it that in many years, probably thousands.

The last to call it that was likely the Sage of Six Paths himself.

Its tailed beast siblings usually just called it "Kyuubi."

As for humans, they labeled it a demon fox, a natural disaster, and eventually, simply a beast.

"How do you know that name?"

Kurama's tail began to twitch, much like a cat caught stealing catnip, as if its secret had been uncovered.

The name "Kurama" was given by the Sage of Six Paths. Kurama had never revealed it to humans for thousands of years.

"The Sage of Six Paths told me in a dream," Uchiha Nan said casually. He couldn't exactly tell Kurama he knew it from watching anime.

"You're lying!"

Kurama cursed, doubting that the Sage of Six Paths would entrust such a dream to Uchiha Nan.

The tailed beasts had been trapped in humans' bodies and used as tools of war for so many years. The Sage of Six Paths hadn't intervened, so why now?

"Believe me or not, how else would I know your name is Kurama? I also know the first tailed beast is Shukaku, and the second is Matatabi."

Uchiha Nan rattled off the names of all nine tailed beasts, causing Kurama to waver.

Had the Sage of Six Paths not died? Why hadn't he come to save Kurama all these years?

It was a shame Kurama always regarded him as a father!

Kurama prayed silently, hoping the Sage would rescue it from suffering, but no miracle came.

Kurama sighed. It had indeed prayed for salvation over the years, but to no avail.

Yet, Kurama partly believed Uchiha Nan. The tailed beasts shared their names only with those they recognized. Surely, Uchiha Nan wasn't acknowledged by all tailed beasts.

Only the Sage of Six Paths could have revealed all their names.

"What did the Sage say to you?"

Foxes are known for their curiosity, and Kurama couldn't help but ask.

"The Sage of Six Paths said I am the savior of the ninja world and will liberate all tailed beasts in the future!"

Kurama leaned closer, scrutinizing Uchiha Nan's eye color.

Something was off!

The Sage had prophesied:

"There will be a boy with blue eyes. He will laugh and call out the names of the nine tailed beasts."

Uchiha Nan's eyes were black, now red, nowhere near blue.

"What are you doing!!"

Uchiha Nan yelped, stepping back.

Kurama shared the Sage's prophecy.

"As times change, prophecies do too.

"If the Sage could predict the future so precisely, his sons wouldn't have been at war."

Uchiha Nan remarked, saddened that a sage trusted a toad's prophecy over his own son's potential.

The Sage's family, from Kaguya to him, had failed in parenting.

"The Sage told you this?"

Kurama was surprised, believing Uchiha Nan. Only contemporaries could know such family scandals, ones the Sage scarcely mentioned.

Even Kurama, who considered himself the Sage's godson, found sibling rivalry embarrassing and didn't discuss it.

Their nine godson tailed beasts were sensible. Though they disagreed, they never sought to kill each other.

"Why did you come to me?"

Kurama lay down, resting his head on crossed paws, as if about to nap. Surely Uchiha Nan was here with a request.

Humans hadn't changed much over the years. They always sought favors when they came to the Three Treasures Palace.

"You need to act!"

"Of course, I'm here to offer you freedom, Kurama!"

Uchiha Nan began with a promise, his past sales instincts kicking in.

Even when asking for help, act like you're offering it!

"Um?"

Kurama perked up, hope in his eyes.

Who wants to be locked in a small dark room? Kurama longed to roam freely in the jungle!

"You'll let me out?"

"Of course!"

"Tailed beasts deserve freedom, not enslavement."

Uchiha Nan smiled at Kurama.

"But I can't do it now!"

"I'm not Hokage yet!"

"Only Hokage can manage tailed beasts."

Uchiha Nan feigned reluctance, wanting to free Kurama, but circumstances prevented it.

Uchiha Nan saw Kurama's eagerness for freedom.

"Are you serious?"

"Absolutely!"

"I swear by the Sage of Six Paths."

Uchiha Nan smiled, swearing skillfully. Even if he couldn't release Kurama, it would affect the Sage's reputation.

"Then I'll help you become Hokage!"

The Nine-Tails decided to gamble; it craved freedom.

Being confined in darkness was unbearable. It was a wonder how it endured all these years.

"Deal!"

"Okay!"

"When I become Hokage, you'll be free once Uzumaki Mito passes!"

Kurama's eyes widened at Uchiha Nan. Typical of the cunning Uchiha. Why wait for Mito to die?

"You want me to wait for Mito Uzumaki to die?"

"Of course, she's a Konoha veteran. I can't just eliminate her as Hokage."

"I'm kind. I hate seeing people die."

Uchiha Nan grinned, showing compassion. Seeing Kurama hesitate, he added:

"Think about it; Mito's old. How long can she live?"

"The days aren't long; just bear with it."

Kurama rolled his eyes, still unsure whether to believe Uchiha Nan's words.

The fox's instincts sensed Uchiha Nan might be bluffing.

"Forget it if you don't believe me. Let Mito beat me and become Hokage."

"Konoha will soon find a new Nine-Tails Jinchūriki from the Uzumaki clan."

"As soon as Mito takes office, it begins."

Uchiha Nan sighed, pretending to leave.
