Chapter 38 - Chapter 39: The Final Stand

The tension was palpable as Cassie, Ethan, Anya, and Nikolai prepared for what felt like their last battle. The dimly lit hub buzzed with the sound of servers working overtime, broadcasting the stolen files to every major news outlet and whistleblower organization across the globe. Despite the chaos outside, Cassie felt a flicker of satisfaction. The truth was out. Eclipse's web of corruption was unraveling.

But Eclipse wasn't going down quietly.

"Positions!" Cassie barked, scanning the room for defensible spots.

Ethan secured the main entryway, his rifle aimed at the approaching shadows outside. Anya covered the rear exit with a silenced pistol, her movements precise and calculated. Nikolai crouched behind the main console, typing furiously to ensure the files couldn't be traced back to the hacker's network.

Cassie took the central position, her weapon drawn and her focus razor-sharp. "They'll try to destroy the servers first. Protect them at all costs."

---

The first wave came quickly—three operatives in tactical gear breaching the front door. Ethan's rifle roared to life, dropping two instantly. The third dived for cover, returning fire with a spray of bullets that ricocheted off the server racks.

"Down!" Cassie shouted, firing a precise shot that caught the operative in the shoulder, forcing him to collapse with a groan.

Anya's voice rang out from the rear. "Movement on my side!"

Cassie pivoted, catching sight of another group attempting to flank them. "Anya, fall back toward the center. We need to hold this ground together!"

Anya didn't argue. She released a quick burst of fire, disabling one operative, then retreated toward the main server cluster.

"We're getting pinned down here!" Ethan growled, reloading.

Cassie's mind raced. They couldn't last against Eclipse's endless reinforcements. "Nikolai, how much longer?"

"Another five minutes!" he replied, his fingers dancing across the keyboard.

"Make it three," she snapped.

---

The sound of glass shattering signaled the next assault. Smoke grenades rolled into the room, hissing as they filled the air with thick, choking fumes. Cassie pulled her scarf over her face, her eyes watering as she fired blindly at the advancing silhouettes.

"We can't hold them like this!" Anya shouted, coughing as she fell back.

"Stay focused!" Cassie ordered. "Aim for the shadows—don't let them reach the servers!"

Ethan threw a fragmentation grenade into the smoke, its deafening explosion momentarily halting the attack. "That'll buy us some time!"

But the reprieve was brief. More operatives swarmed in, their black uniforms blending with the haze.

Cassie's chest tightened. They were being overwhelmed.

---

A sudden, familiar voice crackled over their comms. "Need a hand?"

Cassie's heart skipped. "Alex?"

"Who else?" Alex replied, his tone cocky but comforting. "We've got your back."

From outside, the sound of heavy gunfire erupted as Alex's team engaged Eclipse's reinforcements. Explosions lit up the night sky, and the pressure inside the hub lessened.

Ethan grinned despite the chaos. "About time you showed up."

"Thank me later," Alex quipped. "Just make sure the files go through."

---

With Alex's team handling the outside forces, Cassie refocused her efforts on protecting Nikolai. She moved to his side, scanning the screens.

"Status?" she demanded.

"The files are 95% uploaded," Nikolai said, sweat dripping from his brow. "Almost there."

The remaining operatives inside the hub launched a desperate attack, their movements erratic as they tried to destroy the servers. Cassie and Anya intercepted them with surgical precision, their shots ringing out in quick succession.

One operative managed to breach the console, raising a blade toward Nikolai. Cassie lunged, tackling him to the ground and disarming him with a swift twist.

"You're done," she hissed, delivering a knockout blow.

---

"Upload complete!" Nikolai shouted, his voice breaking with relief.

Cassie felt a surge of triumph, but it was short-lived.

"They're pulling back," Anya observed, her tone wary.

"Why would they retreat?" Ethan asked, his grip tightening on his rifle.

Cassie's stomach dropped. "They're not retreating. They're regrouping."

The ground trembled as a low rumble filled the air. Cassie's blood ran cold. "They're going to level this place."

---

Alex's voice returned over the comms. "Cassie, we've spotted a vehicle approaching—looks like heavy explosives. You need to get out of there, now."

Cassie grabbed Nikolai by the arm. "We're leaving!"

"But the servers—" Nikolai protested.

"The files are already out," she interrupted. "We've done our job. Now we survive."

---

The team moved swiftly, exiting through the rear passage as the rumble grew louder. Outside, Alex's team provided covering fire, keeping Eclipse's remaining forces at bay.

"Get to the van!" Alex shouted, waving them over.

Cassie led the way, her team piling into the vehicle as Alex's crew followed suit.

As the van sped away, a deafening explosion rocked the city. Cassie glanced back to see a fiery plume rising where the hub had stood. Her heart clenched, but she forced herself to look forward.

---

Inside the van, silence reigned, broken only by their ragged breathing.

"The files are out," Nikolai said, almost to himself. "We did it."

Cassie nodded, her gaze steely. "It's not over yet. Eclipse won't stop until they're completely dismantled. But now the world knows. They'll have nowhere to hide."

Anya leaned back, her expression unreadable. "You've made powerful enemies, Cassie."

"I've had worse," Cassie replied, exhaustion lacing her voice.

Ethan chuckled. "You say that like this wasn't the hardest fight of your life."

Cassie allowed herself a small smile. "It won't be the last."

The van disappeared into the night, leaving the ruins of the battle behind. Eclipse had been exposed, their power shattered. But Cassie knew the fight for justice was far from over.

For now, though, she allowed herself to breathe. They had won a battle. The war could wait for another day.
