Chapter 52: Uncovered secrets
Kael's POV
I watched Niamh's expression, searching for any sign of deception. Her eyes met mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of fear. But it was quickly replaced by a calculating glint.
"You're right, Niamh," I said, my voice low. "I have been running from my past. But I'm not the only one with secrets."
Niamh's expression turned cautious. "What are you talking about, Kael?"
My eyes locked onto Niamh's. "I'm talking about your true identity, Niamh. You're not who you claim to be."
Niamh's face paled, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of fear in her eyes.
"What are you talking about, Kael?" Niamh repeated, her voice steady.
My smile was cold. "I'm talking about the fact that you're not just a skilled warrior, Niamh. You're the daughter of the Order's leader, and you've been playing both sides all along."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Niamh, the woman who had been helping us, was actually the daughter of our enemy?
"Kael, you're clever," she said finally. "But you're also wrong. I'm not playing both sides. I'm playing my own game."
I narrowed my eyes. "What do you mean?"
Niamh's smile grew wider. "Let's just say that my goals align with yours, Kael. At least, for now."
I felt a shiver run down my spine. What was Niamh's true goal? And what did she mean by "for now"?
I glanced at Ava, who was watching us with a mixture of confusion and concern. I knew I had to protect her, no matter what.
"Niamh, I don't know what your game is," I said, my voice cold. "But I'll be watching you. If you betray us, you'll regret it."
Niamh's laughter was low and husky. "I'm shaking in my boots, Kael."
I turned to Ava. "Let's get out of here. We need to regroup and figure out our next move."
Ava nodded, and we walked away from Niamh, leaving her to her secrets and lies.
But I knew this wasn't the end. Niamh's game was far from over, and I was ready to play.
As we walked, I couldn't shake off the feeling that Niamh's revelation was just the tip of the iceberg. There were more secrets, more lies, waiting to be uncovered.
I glanced at Ava, wondering if she knew more than she was letting on. But her expression was innocent, unaware of the storm brewing around us.
I knew I had to protect her, no matter what. But I also knew that I couldn't do it alone. I needed allies, people I could trust.
And that's when I remembered the mysterious figure who had been watching us from the shadows. The figure who had been sending me cryptic messages, hinting at a deeper conspiracy.
I made a mental note to investigate further, to uncover the truth about Niamh and the mysterious figure.
But for now, I had to focus on protecting Ava. I had to keep her safe, no matter what dangers lay ahead.
