Chapter 35: Web of Deceit
Ava's POV:
Sabine and I exchanged a skeptical glance. "Kaida, how do we know we can trust you?" I asked.
Kaida's expression turned resolute. "I'll prove it to you. I'll take you to someone who knows the Shadow Brotherhood's true intentions."
Sabine nodded. "Lead the way."
We followed Kaida through the winding streets of the city, avoiding detection. The air grew thick with tension as we approached a nondescript building.
"Who lives here?" I whispered.
Kaida's eyes flickered with unease. "Someone from my past. Someone who can corroborate my story."
We entered the building, finding ourselves in a dimly lit room. A figure sat in the shadows, their features obscured.
"Kaida," the figure said, their voice low and gravelly. "I didn't expect you to return."
Kaida's eyes dropped. "I've come to make amends, Valtor."
Valtor stepped forward, revealing a scarred face. "You've brought friends."
Sabine's hand rested on the hilt of her sword. "We're here to uncover the truth."
Valtor nodded. "The Shadow Brotherhood seeks the ancient power of Eldarath. They believe it will grant them control over the realm."
I exchanged a worried glance with Sabine. "What's the cost of this power?"
Valtor's expression turned grim. "The destruction of the balance. The realm will plunge into darkness."
Kaida's eyes flashed with determination. "We can't let that happen."
Cassius' POV:
I stood before the Shadow Brotherhood's representative, my heart heavy with doubt.
"Cassius, you've proven yourself loyal," the representative said, their voice dripping with malice. "But loyalty must be tested."
I gritted my teeth. "What do you want me to do?"
The representative smiled. "Secure the ancient power. Crush all opposition."
I felt a pang of unease. Was I truly fighting for my people, or was I a pawn in a larger game?
As I left the meeting, I couldn't shake Kaida's words: "You're just a pawn in their game."
