Bitch! Maya exclaimed in her head.
It was a new day, a new job and she knew now was not the time to be that woman, so she smiled and quietly left the couple, or not, she didn't care. Mrs. Sharon was trying to calm the fuming William when she heard the annoying voice of Lydia and she knew it was time for her to intervene. Office romances have been forbidden but she knew Lydia and Brian had had one or two rolls in the sheets, if not more.
Brian has always tried to keep his sexual life out of the office, so when he found out that the woman he had a one-night stand with was one of the recruits who would be working alongside him as a colleague in his firm; it ignited another feeling in him. He had always been one for daring situations and making risky decisions, so rather than stopping their sex tryst, he continued and even progressed to having a couple of office sexual encounters with Lydia and now she thinks she owned him.
"Lydia, I have told you e and I will say it again since I do not like having to repeat myself, you and I will never happen. All we are good for is fucking and that's all we'll ever be. You need to stop being needy and whiny all the time." Brian said to her harshly making sure others in the room could hear him but not so loud for them to know exactly what exactly was being said. Lydia could feel tears well up in her eyes, she opened her mouth to say her mind but Brian cut her off with a hush, "All you're ever good for is a quick fuck, Lydia, get over yourself."
After saying this, he left Lydia standing with her mouth wide open. Mrs. Sharon who was on the way to break up whatever exchange they had stopped in her tracks when she saw Brian walk away leaving Lydia in tears. Lydia, unable to take the embarrassment, left the room in tears. Maya saw the whole exchange and concluded that Brian was either an egoistic narcissistic bastard or just an inconsiderate and arrogant one and she concluded in her mind that she would never have anything to do with him.
Mrs. Sharon, not wanting to be in the mess called Maya, "Maya, you can go back to your seat. I need to make a quick stop first." She said to her as she walked off. Maya could only assume she was going to see Brian.
"Brian, what was that shit you just pulled?" Sharon asked immediately as she entered into Brian's office.
"Shit? By shit, do you mean Lydia or William? If it's Lydia, she had it coming and William will be fine. Not everything has to go in his way; he knows that, that's why he is in this line of business." Brian said to Sharon dismissively.
"Oh! What do you mean by 'in this line of business?" Sharon started to say, already getting angry, "You mean the line of business where you betray the firm's and the client's trust and decide to do things of your own accord? Brian, I don't know where you got your wings from, but you might need to stop them from flying so high lest they lead you into the stratosphere with less oxygen."
"Okay, I'm starting to feel a bit threatened here. Why are you coming at me, Sharon?" Brian replied to her with his hands raised. "When you hired me, you gave me the reins to do as I like and now you're asking me why I did what I did."
Sharon sighed deeply in concern, she knew whatever she said she couldn't change Brian's mind instead she just shook his head and left him but not before saying to him, "Your arrogant ass will cost you things you love, Brian, just wait and see."
Brian wondered why she was all up in his business, all he did was for the growth of the firm and he was the kind you would call a hotshot attorney and to think everyone in the firm was starting to get jealous. He brushed it off and decided to make a call instead.
Sharon, still fuming with anger and frustration, walked into her office and called out to Maya, "Maya," she called as soon as she picked her telephone, "please come to my office with your notes. Thank you."
Maya got up and hurried into Sharon's office. "Yes ma, I'm here."
"Yes Maya, please take a seat." Sharon gestured towards the chair opposite her and then stretched out her hand to collect the notes from Maya. Maya immediately handed it to her and sat back down.
Still fuming with anger, Sharon decided she needed a distraction, something to take her mind off Brian and his little tantrums.
"Maya," she called out to her softly, "it appears I haven't even asked you questions or anything. Do you care to tell me a little about yourself as you know I wasn't there when you were interviewed?" Mrs. Sharon asked her question. This surprised Maya and took her back, she stared in shock. "Oh, it's nothing Maya; I just need a distraction from the drama and also get to know you." Sharon said, assuring her, "if you don't mind." She continued to say.
Maya, seeing the smile on her face, cleared her throat and gave a summary of her life and family. She could tell by the look on the director's face that she was very much interested in knowing about her and that alone encouraged her a lot.
"What about your love life, you didn't say a word about it." Mrs. Sharon pointed out that after Maya was done with her introduction with a larger smile on her face this time. Just as she was about to answer there was a soft knock on the door
"Come in" Sharon half yelled immediately as she took a glance at her wrist watch. It seemed to Maya that she was expecting someone.
Maya quickly turned to the door thankful for the fact she didn't have to answer that question and whom she saw wasn't whom she expected.
It was the guy at the bar and right there, Maya knew the universe had a hand in her life.
"You can leave, Maya," Mrs Sharon said to her but she could see as Brian's eyes followed her.
"Did you need me for something?" he asked after a while.
"No, I just wanted to talk about what happened today, I hope you're good now," she pointed out.
"Hey, he started it first besides, I had other things on my mind," he said looking towards the direction Maya went.
"like what?" Mrs Sharon asked.
"Like getting married for instance," he replied with a wink and stepped out of her office leaving Mrs Sharon shocked and confused.
"Hey, you" Brian called out to Maya when he got to her seat.
"I have a question for you", and without waiting for her to reply, he asked, "Will you marry me?"
