It's midnight in the empty streets of Tokyo, the silence pressing down like a comforting blanket over the city. Takeshi Mori, a tired, middle-aged man, walks aimlessly under the streetlights, humming a tune to himself. With everyone gone, it feels like Tokyo belongs only to him.
"Hm hm hmhm hm hm hmmm... hm hm hmhm hmm hm hmmmm—"But then he stops, mid-hum. Takeshi glances up, and his heart stutters in his chest. There, blotting out the sky, is a gigantic eye staring down at below—watching him, specifically.
A cold shiver crawls down his spine, his skin prickling with an instinctive terror of the unknown and unfathomable nature of the eye.
Surprised and alerted, he does a double take but in that brief closing and opening of his eyes to check if his weariness and sleep deprived body were catching up, only a dense forest greeted his eyes back when opened again.
With the damp earthy smell of the soil and the gentle sunrays weaving through the canopy above that landed on him with a warm touch, he knew it wasn't a hallucination.
Surveying his surroundings, Takeshi tries to take it all in but is jolted with a searing pain on the back of his right hand as if it were on fire, clutching his hand Takeshi looks down to find what happened, but as quick as the pain came so too did it vanish, leaving behind a black shield symbol on his hand.
"Fuck that hurt."
Trying to make out what the symbol burned into his hand could be, Takeshi couldn't help but feel instinctively that it was part of him, not in the sense that it fused into him but that it was always there at the start, something integral and part of his existence. Wierd.
But as he contemplated about what the symbol could mean, do and where he was, Takeshi's thoughts are interrupted as out of the bushes 10 metres to his right popped out 6 wolves growling in his direction and drool dripping as their sunken bodies told him that they haven't eaten in a fair bit, seeing the mad look in their eyes he guessed that they just found their meal to satiate their hunger.
"You've gotta be fucking kidding me." Takeshi sighed, exasperated at how things escalated to one to another. From an eldritch eye in the sky to being transported to a forest somewhere to now wolves, he couldn't help smiling wryly at how his night just gets better and better.
Turning around, Takeshi did the only thing he could do at that moment, Run away! Praying that his unfit and middle aged body didn't get a sprain as he bolted away, the wolves not a second late as they chased after him, paws pounding on the forest floor.
"Awoooo!" "Awooo!" "Awoooo!""Awoooo!" "Awooo!" "Awoooo!"
"Fucking overgrown dogs." Takeshi cursed under his breath sweating bullets and cursing at how his unfit body and old age coming back to bite him at the worst time as his legs felt as if it was on fire and his heart beating rapidly as if a drummer high on drugs were pounding recklessly on it.
He truly regretted not taking up his neighbours offer to join that fitness club down the street, but regrets wouldn't help him now and he could only keep running forward.
As he ran through bushes, jumped to avoid overgrown roots, circling around trees in front and blasting through the forest, Takeshi couldn't help but lament at his bad luck. He read about things like this happening in books before but didn't the people in them usually have time to figure things out?!
Scanning his surroundings as he ran, Takeshi tried to find any signs of human activity and trails as he hoped any other humans were around to shoot these bastards dead, but guessing by how everything has been so far, he guessed that instead of bullets it might be fire balls instead considering his magical transportation from Tokyo to a random forest.
Well whether it be a bullet, fireball, sword or anything else he hoped to find anything and anyone else at this point.
Only after a minute of running after though, he noticed that there were less growls and paws pounding on the forest floor than before behind him, but the moment he noticed that something was amiss lo and behold 2 wolves of the 6 he thought was behind him flanked him from the left and right, with one also jumping from the front of a bush he was going to rush through.
Analysing how fucked he was, Takeshi considered taking his own life by slitting or stabbing his throat with a pointy stick near his feet, not wanting to find out how it was to be bitten to death by 6 wolves, but that was only a momentary thought as he took a risk and gamble.
Takeshi tried channelling all his mental energy into the shield symbol on his right arm, hoping it would do something, anything! As the wolves closed in, Takeshi felt something from the symbol as it did something and just in time as well as with a loud thud, the 6 wolves who were pouncing at him were blocked as if ramming into something.
Confused, the wolves got back up and tried again, and once more an impact was heard as they couldn't get through to him and were stopped by something just 2 meters around him.
And when it came to the third try, the wolves wisened up and started circling around him, analysing what this could be as the human in front of them also analysed what was happening.
A barrier, an invisible barrier that only he could see at that was all Takeshi could infer from the now silent standoff that his magical ability bought. Looking at the barrier, which was cylindrical and 2 metres in a 360 radius around him, Takeshi for his safety's sake conjured a barrier on top of it and was glad he did and that it worked as one of the wolves who seemed like the leader was eyeing the top of his head which was open before.
Doing so also allowed Takeshi to get the hang of his ability as contrary to his expectations, it was super easy activating his ability, as if it were just another arm he was born with, he was also able to 'see' around himself when using his ability as well.
Like a 6th eye he was able to see around himself and sense them, allowing him to dictate where to place his barriers, but at a certain point though his senses were cut off 10 meters around himself, but for Takeshi it was enough for the situation as using his ability didn't drain him as much as he thought.
Grinning Takeshi stared at the wolves who now became unsettled and alarmed seeing their prey now smiling ear to ear, not to mention the mysterious barrier blocking them from getting him.
Howl! Seeing the situation going south and his prey smiling, the alpha of the pack shouted at his people to run away, but it was too late as all 6 wolves who ran were slammed into the ground as they rammed into something, but they didn't know what as they could clearly see in front of themselves but couldn't go through.
In that moment the wolves felt a sense of killing intent emanating from behind, the source being the human they thought was prey but now a hunter, eyeing them as if meat on the chopping block, Takeshi couldn't help but ooze with confidence and malice at the wolves with his new found power as his disposal.
The wolves couldn't help but shiver as the second barrier they rammed into started closing in and fully solidifying the fact there was no escape.
