Later that day, Alina found herself summoned to Kael's private chambers. As she entered, she was struck by how different the atmosphere felt. The tension that usually hung between them seemed softer, almost uncertain.
Kael was seated behind his heavy oak desk, reading a scroll with a furrowed brow. He looked up as she approached, his expression unreadable.
"Alina," he said, gesturing for her to sit. "I wanted to speak with you about Aric's betrayal."
Alina's heart skipped a beat. Was this an accusation? A test? She forced herself to remain calm. "What would you like to know, Your Majesty?"
Kael leaned back in his chair, studying her with those piercing blue eyes that seemed to see right through her. "How did you know he was the traitor?" he asked, his voice soft but laced with suspicion.
Alina chose her words carefully. "I noticed inconsistencies in his behavior," she explained. "He was too eager to please, too quick to agree with your commands. It felt... unnatural. So I had Liora watch him closely."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "You had my men watched without my permission?"
Alina's pulse quickened, but she met his gaze steadily. "I did what was necessary to protect you, Your Majesty," she said. "If that was a mistake, then I take full responsibility."
There was a long pause, and then Kael's expression softened ever so slightly. "You took a great risk," he said quietly. "But it seems your instincts were correct."
Alina let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "I only wish to serve you and ensure the stability of this kingdom," she said. "Our fates are intertwined now, whether we like it or not."
Kael's eyes darkened, and for a moment, she thought he might reach out to touch her. But then he pulled back, retreating behind the mask of the Blood King once more. "Be careful, Alina," he warned. "Loyalty is a fragile thing, easily broken."
