As the days turned into weeks, Alina found herself growing more attuned to the subtle currents of power in Kael's court. She no longer flinched at the sidelong glances or the veiled threats. Instead, she began to use them to her advantage, carefully positioning herself as someone useful to Kael.
Kael, for his part, seemed to be keeping a closer watch on her. Though he rarely spoke to her outside of official matters, Alina could feel his eyes on her during council meetings and court gatherings. There were moments when she would catch him studying her, as if trying to unravel the mystery of her presence in his life.
One evening, after a particularly tense council session, Kael summoned her to his private chambers. Alina's pulse quickened as she made her way through the dimly lit corridors, wondering what new trial awaited her.
"Sit," Kael said curtly when she entered. He was standing by the window, his back to her, gazing out at the darkened city below.
Alina obeyed, her heart racing. What did he want from her this time? But instead of berating her, Kael turned to face her with a contemplative look.
"You have been... resourceful," he said slowly, as if the words were foreign to him. "You exposed Soren, and you've kept yourself alive despite many wishing otherwise. But tell me, Alina—why are you really here?"
Alina met his piercing gaze, refusing to look away. "I am here to secure peace between our kingdoms, Your Majesty," she replied, her voice steady.
Kael's lips twisted into a bitter smile. "Peace? Or power? Do not think I am fooled by your innocent facade."
Alina's breath caught, but she forced herself to remain calm. "I seek neither power nor war. I only wish to protect my people," she said. "And if that means making myself useful to you, then so be it."
Kael stared at her for a long moment before finally turning away. "We shall see," he murmured. "For now, consider yourself under my protection. But remember this, Alina—my trust is not easily given."
