The morning sun filtered through the curtains as Caius stood in front of his mirror, staring at his reflection. He had passed his final test and was now a full member of the Panthers. The black leather jacket with the Panther insignia felt heavy on his shoulders, not just because of its weight, but because of what it represented.
Taking a deep breath, Caius adjusted the jacket and grabbed his messenger bag. He knew that wearing it to school would send a clear message, one that could either solidify his newfound identity or push him further away from his old friends. But he was ready to face whatever came his way.
As he walked to school, Caius felt the eyes of passersby on him. The Panthers had a reputation, and the jacket was a symbol of both respect and fear. His heart pounded with a mix of pride and apprehension as he approached the school gates.
The usual hustle and bustle of the schoolyard seemed to slow as Caius entered, his presence drawing attention. Whispers and curious glances followed him, but he kept his head high, determined to face the day with confidence.
During lunch, Caius made his way to the table where Bennet and a few other Panthers were sitting. The familiar sense of camaraderie washed over him as he joined them, feeling a sense of belonging.
"Looking sharp, Caius," Bennet said with a grin, nodding at the jacket. "How does it feel to finally be one of us?"
Caius smiled, feeling a surge of pride. "It feels right. Thanks for all your support, Bennet."
As they chatted, Caius couldn't help but notice Bianca and the rest of his old friends sitting at a nearby table. Their expressions were filled with concern, and it was clear that they were struggling to understand the changes he had undergone.
After lunch, Caius was heading to his next class when he heard a familiar voice calling his name. He turned to see Bianca hurrying towards him, her face filled with determination.
"Caius, can we talk?" she asked, her voice tense.
He sighed, knowing this conversation was inevitable. "Sure, Bianca. What's up?"
She glanced at the Panther jacket, her eyes filled with worry. "I know you're going through a lot, but joining the Panthers... it's dangerous. I care about you, and I don't want to see you get hurt."
"Bianca, I appreciate your concern," Caius said, his tone firm but gentle. "But this is my choice. I've found a place where I belong, and I have to follow this path."
"But Caius, we're your friends," Bianca insisted, her eyes pleading.
"Yes friends that ditched me because of my family's past" Caius replied, his voice steady.
Bianca's shoulders sagged in defeat, her eyes filled with sadness. "Caius, we didn't ditch you. Our parents learned we were friends with you they weren't happy but all of us somehow managed It. But after your dad got arrested they forbade us from seeing you. Even Penelope's mom and both of us know she doesn't care about Penie. We couldn't talk to you cause It could have gone to our parent's ears and we would have been grounded. I thought If your dad was released everything could go back to normal."
"I... need to think"
As he approached his locker, he spotted Jason and Mark lingering nearby, their expressions uneasy.
Jason nudged Mark, and the two exchanged a look before quickly moving away. Caius watched them, a mixture of emotions swirling within him. He had always been on the receiving end of their mockery and bullying, but now things were different. They avoided him, their previous bravado replaced with a wary respect.
"Southie freak," Jason muttered under his breath, but there was no venom in his voice—only fear.
Mark shot a glance at Caius, his face pale. "Just leave him alone, Jason. He's a Panther now."
Caius felt a surge of satisfaction. The jacket had given him a shield against their taunts, but it had also created a barrier between him and the rest of the school. He opened his locker, trying to focus on the day ahead.
Throughout the day, Caius noticed the subtle ways people treated him differently. Some avoided eye contact, while others gave him a wide berth in the hallways. Even the teachers seemed more cautious, their gazes lingering on him a moment longer than usual.
The day passed in a blur as Caius navigated the hallways, the weight of the Panther jacket both a comfort and a challenge.
