Devin 's POV
I felt regret like a disease, an unwanted visitor that consumed my thoughts as I walked away from Angela and exited the pasta shop. Even after I walked away from the building, her intense blue eyes filled with pain and confusion continued to track me, her lingering presence resembling an unshakeable shadow.
I never intended to hurt her. At least, that's the justification I gave myself. How could I rationalise what I did? She believed that I hated her, and maybe it was easier for her to think so. Perhaps it was also easier for me. However, the reality was much more intricate, wrapped up in a complex web of feelings and responsibilities that I struggled to manoeuvre through.
No, I didn't dislike her. Not really. How could I possibly clarify the predicament we found ourselves in? She thought I was distancing myself due to anger or apathy, and perhaps it was easier for her to perceive it like that. Perhaps it was also easier for me. The truth was, I was attempting to protect her from a world that could consume her if she became too involved.
Entering the dim alleyway behind the eatery, the chilly wind failed to soothe the inner struggles. I tightly clenched my fists, my knuckles turning white as I fought to contain the storm of emotions brewing inside me. The odor of trash combined with my rage and irritation, further enhancing the oppressive ambiance.
Oh no! What made her so stubborn?
She lacked an understanding of the real implications, completely unaware of the peril she was in simply by being close to me. I needed to protect her, even if it involved pushing her away.
However, whenever I looked into her eyes and saw her standing strong against me, unwilling to give in, I was reminded of the reason why I was initially attracted to her. The passion burning inside her drew me in, yet that very same intensity could put her life at risk.
Resting against the chilly brick surface, I inhaled deeply, trying to soothe the chaos inside me. I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket, so I reluctantly took it out and briefly looked at the screen. It was a communication from Nikolai, the vampire ruler I was scheduled to see later in the evening. I felt a sinking feeling in my heart while reading his words.
The agreement is canceled if you arrive after the agreed time. Do not come up with any excuses.
Failing was not an option due to financial constraints. The delicate peace between our species teetered on a fragile edge, and if I mishandled this issue, it could escalate into a full-blown conflict. However, every part of me strongly urged to go back, go back to Angela , and be completely honest and open.
I was unable to do so. Not at the moment. Not when there was so much at stake.
Taking a deep breath, I propelled myself away from the wall, forcing my regret and anger to the depths where they wouldn't disrupt the task at hand. I needed to concentrate. The encounter with Nikolai was crucial. If we were able to finalize this agreement, it would strengthen our position and provide us with the power necessary to uphold peace. However, vampires were unpredictable beings, and Nikolai was famous for his cleverness and brutality. He detested lack of strength and inability to make decisions. I couldn't afford either of them.
As I neared the deserted warehouse for our meeting, a noticeable tension lingered in the air, dense like fog. The subtle smell of blood and death floated past, serving as a reminder of what was at stake. The structure stood in front of me like a relic from a different time - its windows broken, metal frame decayed - an appropriate spot for a secret meeting; concealed from view where any potential screams would go unnoticed.
I entered the abandoned room through the ancient, noisy door, the sound echoing as a cautionary signal. The interior was just as barren as the outside, faintly illuminated by candles scattered around, creating long shadows on the walls. Nikolai and his companions had already arrived, their pale faces and intense stares focused on me when I walked in. They gathered around a sizable wooden table, looking calm yet with a subtle tension that suggested they were prepared for anything.
Nikolai, standing tall and commanding in his lengthy black jacket and steely, analytic gaze, confidently moved ahead with a subtle smile on his face. His shiny silver hair shimmered in the flickering light, while his spooky red eyes appeared to look straight into all the doubts and hesitations I attempted to hide.
"Oh, Devin ," he said slowly in a smooth voice filled with threat. "You're running out of time." I started to believe that you had become timid.
I put on a fake smile, disregarding his teasing. Nikolai, you know me more thoroughly than that. I never retreat from a challenge.
He smiled wider, showing his pointed teeth. "Excellent." Due to this agreement... It goes beyond being just a challenge. It is a trial of commitment, power, and determination. "Do you really think you're prepared for that?"
I moved nearer to the table, locking eyes with him confidently and not revealing any vulnerability. If I weren't here, I wouldn't be present.
Nikolai's eyes twinkled with delight, as though he found my boldness entertaining. However, I was wise enough not to lower my defenses. Nikolai was one of the most dangerous predators, being a vampire. He would attack as soon as he noticed any weakness.
"In a serious tone, he said, 'Okay,'" "But comprehend this, Devin . Once you commit to this agreement, there is no turning back. You will be connected by blood and promise, and any act of betrayal will lead to death.
The weight of the agreement we were about to enter into burdened me as his words lingered heavily in the atmosphere. However, it was my sole choice in order to safeguard Angela , by keeping her away from this realm full of monsters and brutality. I couldn't allow her to be involved in it.
"I comprehend," I responded, my voice remaining calm. "Let's finish this."
